An improved robust stability and robust stabilization method for linear discrete-time uncertain systems

This paper addresses the problems of the robust stability and robust stabilization of a discrete-time system with polytopic uncertainties. A new and simple method is presented to directly decouple the Lyapunov matrix and the system dynamic matrix. Combining this method with the parameter-dependent Lyapunov function approach yields new criteria that include some existing ones as special cases. A numerical example illustrates the improvement over the existing ones.

Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

The Digital Phoenix project is a multiyear project aimed at developing a realistic digital representation of the Phoenix metropolitan area through space and time that can be experienced in Arizona State University's Decision Theater. A significant objective of this project is to create an environment for querying, researching, and visualizing critical issues confronting a rapidly urbanizing area about urban sustainability. By creating a multidimensional virtual model of Phoenix from a variety of data sources, we can visualize patterns of growth and development, as well as their consequences emerging across the continuums of space and time. The modeling of future environments will enable the assessment of policy scenarios and guide desired future urban-environmental patterns. A digitally constructed model of the city will also allow us to discover what Phoenix could have been like, starting with historical data as the basis for projecting to the present and into the future.

Improving the admission control process in wireless metropolitan area networks (WMAN) based on the IEEE 802.16e standard can improve the QoS. Because IEEE 802.16e supports five classes of service as well as mobility, an admission control policy for non-preprovisioned service flow is proposed. This policy is compatible with the QoS parameters for each service class defined in the standard. As improvements, the guard channel scheme is used to give handover connections higher priority and a novel proportional bandwidth-borrowing scheme is added to prioritize the different service classes. The simulation results show the proposed admission control policy maximizes the bandwidth utilization and the use of the two schemes provides a reasonable priority order of new originated connections and handover connections of different service classes. The connection-blocking and connection-dropping probabilities were reduced to the extent that they can be ignored

Photonic entanglement has a wide range of applications in quantum computation and communication. Here we introduce a device: the photonic module, which allows for the rapid, deterministic preparation of a large class of entangled photon states. The module is an application independent, “plug and play” device, with sufficient flexibility to prepare entanglement for all major quantum computation and communication applications in a completely deterministic fashion without number-discriminated photon detection. We present two alternative constructions for the module, one using free-space components and one in a photonic band-gap structure. The natural operation of the module is to generate states within the stabilizer formalism and we present an analysis on the cavity requirements to experimentally realize this device.

The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

Robot imitation comprises a number of hard problems, one of the most difficult problems is the extraction of intention from a demonstration. A demonstration can almost always be interpreted in different ways, making it impossible for the imitating robot to find out what exactly it is that was demonstrated. We first attempt to set out the problem of intention reading. Next, we offer a computational model which implements a solution to intention reading. Our model needs repeated interactions between the demonstrator and the imitator. Through keeping a score about which interactions where successful, the imitating robot gradually builds a model which "understands" what the intent is of the demonstrator. ©2006 IEEE.

IEEE 802.11 is worldwide implemented being the most widely deployed protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). In a realistic environment, WLANs encounter channel fading which causes independent and burst transmission errors which in addition with packet collisions degrade overall performance. In this paper, we present a simple and effective contention window-resetting scheme, named Double Increment Double Decrement (DIDD), to improve the performance of the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) scheme utilized in IEEE 802.11. Our work becomes important and meaningful since it analyzes and models the error patterns in order to evaluate their potential impact on throughput efficiency and average packet delay performance. In particular, we provide useful insights by exploring the effect of independent and burst transmission errors, packet size and network size on the performance of the DIDD scheme. © 2006 IEEE.

With advances in process technology, soft errors(SE)are becoming an increasingly critical design concern. Due to their large area and high density, caches are worst hit by soft errors. Although Error Correction Code based mechanisms protect the data in caches, they have high performance and power overheads. Since multimedia applications are increasingly being used in mission-critical embedded systems where both reliability and energy are a major concern, there is a de?nite need to improve reliability in embedded systems, without too much energy overhead. We observe that while a soft error in multimedia data may only result in a minor loss in QoS, a soft error in avariable that controls the execution ?ow of the program may be fatal. Consequently, we propose to partition the data space into failure critical and failure non-critical data, and provide a high-degree of soft error protection only to the failure critical data in Horizontally Partitioned Caches. Experimental results demonstrate that our selective data protection can achieve the failure rate close to that of a soft error protected cache system, while retaining the performance and energy consumption similar to those of a traditional cache system, with some degradation in QoS. For example, for conventional con?guration as in IntelXScale, our approach achieves the same failure rate, while improving performance by 28% and reducing energy consumption by 29%in comparison with a soft error protected cache. Access to the large web content hosted all over the world by users of the Internet engage many hosts, routers/switches and faster links. They challenge the internet backbone to operate at its capacity to assure efficient content access. This may result in congestion and raises concerns over various Quality of Service (QoS) issues like high delays, high packet loss and low throughput of the system for various Internet applications. Thus, there is a need to develop e®ective congestion control mechanisms in order to meet various Quality of Service (QoS) related performance parameters. In this paper, our emphasis is on the Active Queue Management (AQM) mechanisms, particularly Random Early Detection (RED). We propose a threshold based novel analytical model based on standard RED mechanism. Various numerical examples are presented for Internet traffic scenarios containing both the burstiness and correlation properties of the network traffic. © 2005 UK Simulation Society.
