A Low-Rank Matching Attention Based Cross-Modal Feature Fusion Method for Conversational Emotion Recognition

Conversational emotion recognition (CER) is an important research topic in human-computer interactions. Although recent advancements in transformer-based cross-modal fusion methods have shown promise in CER tasks, they tend to overlook the crucial intra-modal and inter-modal emotional interaction or suffer from high computational complexity. To address this, we introduce a novel and lightweight cross-modal feature fusion method called Low-Rank Matching Attention Method (LMAM). LMAM effectively captures contextual emotional semantic information in conversations while mitigating the quadratic complexity issue caused by the self-attention mechanism. Specifically, by setting a matching weight and calculating inter-modal features attention scores row by row, LMAM requires only one-third of the parameters of self-attention methods. We also employ the low-rank decomposition method on the weights to further reduce the number of parameters in LMAM. As a result, LMAM offers a lightweight model while avoiding overfitting problems caused by a large number of parameters. Moreover, LMAM is able to fully exploit the intra-modal emotional contextual information within each modality and integrates complementary emotional semantic information across modalities by computing and fusing similarities of intra-modal and inter-modal features simultaneously. Experimental results verify the superiority of LMAM compared with other popular cross-modal fusion methods on the premise of being more lightweight. Also, LMAM can be embedded into any existing state-of-the-art CER methods in a plug-and-play manner, and can be applied to other multi-modal recognition tasks, e.g., session recommendation and humour detection, demonstrating its remarkable generalization ability. © 2024 IEEE.

Aiming at the problems that 3D optical measurement is easy to be affected by peripheral noise, difficult to calculate relative height and low measurement accuracy, a multi-frequency asynchronous phase shift algorithm based on time series changes was proposed. In order to improve the measurement accuracy and anti-interference ability of the system, five kinds of frequency grating projections were adopted. In order to improve the efficiency of phase undoing, the asynchronous phase shift method was used to extract the phase principal value. In view of the multi-frequency heterodyne phase solution method is prone to produce phase jump error, a phase jump error correction method based on threshold discrimination is proposed. The experimental results show that the improved algorithm has better measurement accuracy than the original algorithm, and compared with the traditional multi-frequency heterodyne method, it has strong anti-interference ability and higher measurement accuracy. © 2023 SPIE.

Carbon emission reduction enabled by informatization construction: an analysis of spatial effects based on China’s experience

The "dual-carbon" objective presents a huge challenge for China and the world, with profound implications for the advancement of China’s eco-friendly economy. Additionally, informatization development has a significant impact on the level of carbon emissions in both local and neighbouring regions. Therefore, we employ panel data from 30 provinces in China spanning the years 2012 to 2021, and use the Kernel density estimate and Moran’s index to explore informatization level and carbon emissions space agglomeration characteristics. We elucidate the nonlinear relationship and heterogeneity between informatization improvement and carbon emissions based on the spatial Durbin model. The primary findings are as follows. Firstly, we discover a distinct spatial clustering phenomenon which the informatization level is high in coastal areas and low in inland areas, whereas carbon emissions are low in the south and high in the north. Secondly, the effect of the informatization level on carbon emissions is shown as a U-shaped and non-linear correlation, signifying inhibitory and subsequently promoting phases. Thirdly, we reveal the negative influence on carbon emissions caused by spatial lag terms of the informatization level, and find that a higher local informatization level will have an inhibitory effect on carbon emissions in neighbouring areas. Finally, there is a spatial heterogeneity in the impact of the informatization level on carbon emissions, which presents the U-shaped relation between informatization level and carbon emissions varies across the North-South subregion and the three major economic subregion of China. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

With the proliferation of cloud services and the continuous growth in enterprises' demand for dynamic multi-dimensional resources, the implementation of effective strategy for time-varying workload scheduling has become increasingly significant. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based method for time-varying workload scheduling, aiming to allocate resources efficiently across servers in the cluster. Specifically, we integrate a classifier and queue scorer to construct a priority queue that exploits temporal resource utilization patterns across different workload classes. Then, we design parallel graph attention layers to capture the dimensional features and temporal dynamics of cloud server cluster. Moreover, we propose a DRL algorithm to generate scheduling strategies that can adapt to dynamic environments. Validation on real-world traces from Google cluster demonstrates that our method outperforms existing approaches in key metrics of cloud server cluster management. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Current state-of-the-art image captioning models generate captions in a single language, requiring a combination of multiple language specific models to build a multilingual image captioning system. However, as the number of supported languages increases, it leads to the parameters of the multilingual image captioning system grow linearly. To tackle this issue, we propose a single Compact Interactive TransformEr (CITE) model, which can describe an image in multiple languages simultaneously, making the captioning system more compact. Specifically, based on the standard Transformer model, we share the encoder and decoder backbone parameters and replace the self-attention sub-layer in the decoder with the interactive attention sub-layer. In addition, we extend the traditional monolingual reinforcement learning mechanism to a multilingual version to promote better description generation. Due to the wide use of Chinese and English, we evaluate the performance of our CITE model by simultaneously generating English and Chinese captions. We expand the image captions of the whole MSCOCO dataset and release a COCO-EN-CN dataset. Extensive experiments on the COCO-EN-CN dataset show that our single CITE model with more parameter-efficient can maintain the competitive performance or even better than the monolingual captioning models. © 2023 ACM.

WiFi Channel State information (CSI)-based gesture recognition offers unique advantages, including cost-effectiveness and enhanced privacy protection, and has garnered significant attention in recent years. However, existing WiFi-based gesture recognition solutions exhibit poor generalization ability when deployed in new environment, orientation, or location. Although some methods combine labeled source domain and unlabeled target domain to learn domain-independent features, factors such as data privacy protection hinder access to source data during practical environment adaptation. Consequently, we consider realistic scenario where source data is unavailable during adaptation of unlabeled test data, and instead, a trained source domain model is used. In this paper, we propose Wi-SFDAGR, a WiFi-based Source-free Domain Adaptation Gesture Recognition framework. Specifically, we treat cross-domain as an unsupervised clustering problem, aiming to ensure that features within local neighborhoods exhibit similar prediction results while those farther apart display different prediction outcomes in the feature space. We theoretically analyze the effect of enhanced prediction consistency between neighbor points extracted from gestures on generalization error. Furthermore, we employ an attraction-dispersion network to strengthen prediction consistency among closely located features in the feature space while reducing it for distantly located features. To mitigate noise introduced during nearest neighbor sample selection in the feature space (where predictions may not align with the input sample’s prediction), we progressively improve nearby sample feature aggregation by estimating uncertainty to reweight local neighborhood predictions. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on the Widar 3.0 and XRF55 datasets and the results show our proposed framework outperforms most cross-domain methods. © 2014 IEEE.

The transient electromagnetic method (TEM) is widely used in geophysical exploration. In TEM data interpretation, nonlinear inversion plays an important role. However, traditional TEM nonlinear inversion adopts the OCCAM imaging method, which merely presents the approximate shape of the stratum model, with poor inversion accuracy and much iteration time. To solve the above problems, a novel nonlinear inversion approach based on extreme learning machine (ELM) is proposed in this paper. The ELM is required to establish the input–output mapping relationship of the inversion network only once through the analytical method, which is different from the traditional neural network method that demands iterative gradient learning and is prone to fall into the local optimum. Moreover, the ELM inversion network by randomly assigning the hidden layer parameters is capable of mapping the observed TEM data and quickly producing resistivity images, which avoids time-consuming iteration and inversion calculations. The presented approach is applied to both synthetic and field examples. The results show that compared with the traditional nonlinear inversion algorithms (BP and OCCAM), the proposed method achieves better inversion accuracy and significantly reduces the calculation time, which verifies the effectiveness of the ELM algorithm for TEM data interpretation.
