A Population Initialization Method Based on Similarity and Mutual information in Evolutionary Algorithm for Bi-Objective Feature Selection

Feature selection (FS) is an important data pre-processing technique in classification. It aims to remove redundant and irrelevant features from the data, which reduces the dimensionality of data and improves the performance of the classifier. Thus, FS is a bi-objective optimization problem, and evolutionary algorithms (EAs) have been proven to be effective in solving bi-objective FS problems. EA is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm, and the quality of the initial population is an important factor affecting the performance of EA. An improper initial population may negatively affect the convergence speed of the EA and even make the algorithm fall into the local optimum. In this article, we propose a similarity and mutual information-based initialization method, named SMII, to improve the quality of the initial population. This method determines the distribution of initial solutions based on similarity and shields features with high correlation to the selected features according to mutual information. In the experiment, we embed SMII, the latest four initialization methods, and a traditional random initialization method into NSGA-II and compared their performance on 15 public datasets. The experimental results show that SMII performs best on most datasets and can effectively improve the performance of the algorithm. Moreover, we compare the performance of two other EAs before and after embedding SMII on 15 datasets, and the results further prove that the proposed method can effectively improve the search capability of the EA for FS. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Wind farm layout optimization based on Harris hawk optimization algorithm with variable weight coefficients and Jansen wake model

Wind energy, a pollution-free and renewable new energy, has been widely promoted in recent years and has great development potential. An important stage of wind power generation is to solve the problem of wind farm layout optimization (WFLO), that is, to obtain the optimal location of wind turbines so as to obtain the maximum power output with the minimum energy consumption. Based on the Jansen wake model, a WFLO strategy based on the Harris Hawk Optimization Algorithm with Variable Weight Coefficients (ABHHO) was proposed based on the Jansen’s wake model. Two weight coefficients (Beta and Alpha) are used to improve the HHO algorithm. Beta can reduce the search step size, make the global search faster and more detailed, and improve the search efficiency. The vibration pattern of Alpha interferes with the escape energy of the prey, thus moving away from the local optimal. The combination of these two strategies improves the search performance and convergence speed of HHO algorithm. Then seven algorithms (HHO, WOA, BA, AOA, BOA, SCA and RSA) are selected to perform performance optimization simulation with ABHHO on CEC2017 test functions. The experimental results show that ABHHO performs better than other algorithms. Finally, ABHHO was used to optimize the layout of wind power plants, and the performance of Case 1–Case 4 was tested under two initial wind speeds, including the influence of single wake and multi-wake at the same time, shielding part of the wake area, and not shielding the wake area on the production cost and output energy. For the solutions of Case 1–Case 4, 9 algorithms such as HHO, WOA, SCA, PSO, GOA, DE, CSA, ACOR and TLBO, are selected for comparison with ABHHO. Simulation results show that ABHHO can obtain better results in most test schemes and achieve better wind farm layout than other algorithms under the same experimental conditions, as well as obtain higher output power and lower value cost. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-

In this article, a novel evolutionary algorithm called differential evolution with Lévy flight (DEFL) algorithm was proposed to optimize the Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy model (TSK fuzzy model) by finding the optimal hyper-parameter combination. DEFL consists of the conventional differential evolution (DE) algorithm as the primary search method and Lévy flight which is adopted to improve the early convergence problem of DE by its more changeable step size. Moreover, an adaptive soft-switch factor is designed to achieve the balance between exploration and exploitation according to the fitness of parent individuals, which can enhance the searching ability of DEFL. To verify the high performance of our proposed DEFL, two simulations are conducted. First, the five test functions: Ackley, Rastrigin, Sphere, Dixon & Price, and Perm are performed to verify the searching ability of DEFL and other three evolutionary algorithms: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and DE are adopted for comparison. Then, TSK fuzzy model optimized by DEFL is adopted on eight datasets for classification tasks which are compared with the other nine methods. The first simulation shows that DEFL has the best searching ability compared with other algorithms. The accuracy and ranks of the optimized TSK fuzzy model on eight tasks demonstrate the high performance of the model improved by DEFL. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Deep neural networks will be affected by various noises in different scenes. Traditional deep neural networks often use gradient descent algorithms to update parameter weights. When the gradient falls to a certain range, it is easy to fall into the local optimal solution. Although the impulse method and other methods can escape from local optimization in some scenarios, they still have some limitations, which will greatly reduce the application effect of the actual scenes. To solve the above problems, a two-stream neural network with different gradient update strategies was proposed. Combined with the gradient ascent algorithm, this method alleviated the disadvantage of deep neural networks falling into local optimality and increased the robustness of neural networks to a certain extent. The experimental results on the CIFAR10 dataset verify that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of various gradient descent optimizers by about 1%, such as SGD, Adagrad, RM-Sprop and Adam. The experimental results on the COCO dataset show that the accuracy of the proposed method is also improved compared with the baseline models PAA and EfficientDet. The method proposed can be widely used in various neural network structures and has good practical significance and application prospects. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. Enhanced Tube-Based Event-Triggered Stochastic Model Predictive Control With Additive Uncertainties

This paper proposes an event-triggered stochastic model predictive control for discrete-time linear time-invariant(LTI) systems under additive stochastic disturbances. It first constructs a probabilistic invariant set and a probabilistic reachable set based on the priori knowledge of system *** with enhanced robust tubes, the chance constraints are then formulated into a deterministic form. To alleviate the online computational burden, a novel event-triggered stochastic model predictive control is developed, where the triggering condition is designed based on the past and future optimal trajectory tracking errors in order to achieve a good trade-off between system resource utilization and control performance. Two triggering parameters σ and γ are used to adjust the frequency of solving the optimization problem. The probabilistic feasibility and stability of the system under the event-triggered mechanism are also examined. Finally, numerical studies on the control of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning(HVAC) system confirm the efficacy of the proposed control.

Tissue segmentation in histopathological images plays a crucial role in computational pathology, owing to its significant potential to indicate the prognosis of cancer patients. Presently, numerous Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) methods strive to utilize image-level labels to achieve pixel-level segmentation, aiming to minimize the need for detailed annotations. Most of these methods rely on Class Activation Maps (CAM) extracted from classification models, frequently leading to poor coverage of objects. The major cause is attributed to the strong inductive bias of the classification model, focusing primarily on discriminative feature of objects, rather than non-discriminative features. Inspired by this, we propose a simple yet effective method that introduces a self-supervised task by exploiting both the discriminative and non-discriminative features, and generate Unbiased Activation Maps (UAM) to encompass the whole object. Specifically, our method entails clustering all spatial features of an object class to derive semantic centers. Each center then works as a spatial filter that amplifies similar feature and suppresses dissimilar feature, and extract high-quality pseudo-labels (some noise at object boundaries). Moreover, we further propose a Noise-Reduced (NR) Learning method to train the segmentation network towards credible signals and lessen the impact of false predictions. Comprehensive experimental results on two public histopathology image datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method over the state-of-the-art weakly supervised segmentation methods. © 2025 IEEE. High-sensitivity strain sensor based on a Fabry–Pérot interferometer with a tapered capillary structure

A high-sensitivity strain sensor based on a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) with a tapered capillary structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is designed to enhance strain responsiveness while minimizing temperature cross-sensitivity, making it suitable for precision strain measurements. It is fabricated by fusing a segment of capillary glass tube between two single-mode fibers using a cost-effective and simple method. The tapered air cavity deforms more readily under axial strain, resulting in improved sensitivity. In the strain range from 0 to 202.84 µΕ, the sensor exhibits a high strain sensitivity of 32.19 pm/µΕ. In the temperature range from 30 to 80 ◦C, the temperature sensitivity and strain–temperature cross-sensitivity were measured to be 3.26 pm/◦C and 0.101 µΕ/◦C, *** sensor also demonstrates excellent stability and repeatability.
