Denoising for satellite laser altimetry full-waveform data based on EMD-Hurst analysis

Full-waveform decomposition is crucial for obtaining accurate satelliteground distance,the accuracy of which is severely affected by ***,the traditional filters all depend on filtering *** paper presents a new and adaptive method for denoising based on empirical mode decomposition(EMD)and Hurst analysis(EMD-Hurst).The noisy full-waveforms are first decomposed into their intrinsic mode functions(IMFs),and the Hurst exponent of each IMF is established by the detrended fluctuation *** IMF is regarded as the highfrequency noise and is deleted if its Hurst exponent is≤*** simulated and real full-waveforms were conducted to validate and evaluate the method by comparing with six other IMF selection methods via metrics like waveform decomposition consistency ratio(CR),average error of decomposition parameters,and ICESat/GLAS waveformparameter product *** comparisons show that:(1)under different SNR conditions,EMD-Hurst performs robustly and obtains a higher CR than other EMD based methods;(2)obtains the highest average CR and a relatively lower average error for the echo parameters;and(3)peak numbers and fitting accuracy for GLAH01 are more reasonable and precise than those of GLAH05,which could offer a good reference for the processing on future space-borne full-waveform data.

The present work was aimed to evaluate the performance of low-cost activated carbon from coffee residue for Bisphenol A removal. Coffee residue was activated using phosphoric acid and iron (III) chloride. The resultant activated carbons were characterized for textural properties, surface chemistry and surface morphology. The results show that AC-CoR I (H 3 PO 4 -activated coffee residue carbon) exhibits high surface area of 1030 m 2 /g and mesopore size of 2.13 nm, favourable for Bisphenol A removal at 105 mg/g. The adsorption data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. In conclusion, coffee residue is a promising precursor of activated carbon for wastewater treatment.

Accurately describing the lattice dynamics and microscopic mechanism of thermal transport in materials with low-lying flat phonon modes remains an outstanding challenge due to the intrinsic strong anharmonicity. In this paper, we investigate the lattice dynamics and thermal transport in skutterudite YbFe4Sb12 using a state-of-the-art first-principles-based anharmonic phonon renormalization technique and a unified theory of lattice thermal transport. In contrast to the previous phenomenological models that introduce additional resonant scattering terms or hopping channels, we show that the unusual total lattice thermal conductivity in YbFe4Sb12 can be accurately predicted by considering anharmonic phonon renormalization and coherence contributions from the off-diagonal terms of heat flux operators. Both the cubic and quartic anharmonicities are essential for precisely predicting the significant shift in phonon energies. Specifically, the anharmonicity-induced phonon stiffening of the low-lying flat modes significantly enhances the thermal conductivity of particlelike phonons, e.g., by up to a factor of 1.6 at 300 K, by suppressing the cubic coupling strength and altering the scattering phase space, resulting in much-improved agreement with experiments. By further including the coherence contributions, the predicted total thermal conductivity increases by ∼22% throughout the entire temperature range, reproducing well the experimental values in both magnitude and temperature dependence. In this paper, we highlight the strong impact of higher-order anharmonicity on lattice dynamics and thermal transport in the filled skutterudite YbFe4Sb12. The insights gained in this paper will be helpful for manipulating the thermal properties of skutterudites and potentially other complex materials with strong anharmonicity, which can improve their performance in applications such as thermoelectrics, ferroelectrics, and photovoltaics.

This work focused on the desulfurization of thiophene using a photocatalyst comprising zinc oxide (ZnO) and fibrous silica nanospheres (KCC-1) to exploit the photocatalytic process. Six photocatalyst samples (commercial ZnO, KCC-1, ZnO/1.5KCC-1, ZnO/2.0KCC-1, ZnO/2.5KCC-1 and ZnO/PEG) were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). It was found that the properties of ZnO were altered with the incorporation of KCC-1 to enhance the efficiency of thiophene desulfurization. Desulfurization performances were investigated using three parameters, which were initial pH, initial thiophene concentration and photocatalyst loading. Each of the parameters was validated using thiophene desulfurization percentage and turbidity removal percentage. This work discovered that ZnO/2.0KCC-1 was the optimum photocatalyst with 83% thiophene desulfurization. No clear trend was observed for turbidity removal percentage, yet the ZnO/KCC-1 photocatalyst was able to reduce turbidity significantly. The pH of the permeate rose from neutral to the alkaline range due to the hydroxyl radicals (•OH) produced during the desulfurization process. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

China is experiencing accelerated urbanisation,with a large number of people moving from rural to urban areas[1].It has resulted in large losses in the net primary production(NPP),biodiversity and carbon stocks and an increase in environmental pollution and CO_(2)emissions[2–4].In 2015,196 countries signed the Paris Agreement and committed to setting long-term goals to jointly manage climate change and reduce their individual emissions,aiming to control the increase in global average temperature from the pre-industrial level to below 2℃and to curtail the temperature rise within 1.5℃till the end of the 21st century[5].China is bolstering its efforts to achieve the climate change mitigation goals and has announced a plan for achieving carbon neutrality by 2060[6].The carbon neutrality goal poses a challenge to the current policies promoting rapid urbanisation across China.

Data authentication mechanism using blockchain’s proof-of-trust mechanism in named data networking

Blockchain is regarded as an approach that can increase the level of trust in the networking environment since its recorded transaction details using cryptographic techniques that make it immutable. Apart from its cryptographic ability, consensus mechanism has made Blockchain to be the main alternative in achieving trust in the network, especially in future Internet architecture such as Named Data Networking (NDN). In NDN, everyone can publish any content and distribute it, including the contaminated content. The contaminated content will be stored in cache memory and contaminate the cache memory. Since NDN does not predefine any trust schema, any nodes can certify the data authority. In this context, this paper attempt to propose a new data authentication scheme using the Blockchain’s Proof-of-Trust consensus mechanism. The Proof-of-Trust mechanism is based on a trust anchor that aggregate votes from consortium of nodes before authenticating, distributing and storing content in the cache memory. The use of Proof-of-Trust mechanism in NDN will be deliberated in this paper. This new authentication scheme is expected to solve the issues of contaminated cache memory as well as to provide a new alternative of data authentication in the future Internet environment.

The aim of this systematic review is to give attention towards the use of wavelet transform in denoising financial time series. This is important to deliver an accurate option pricing for the use of investors or other market practitioners. In this paper, there are many areas of application where researchers employ wavelet transform in time series analysis. Different wavelet transforms with various methodologies have been recorded; either based on the stand-alone wavelet transform function or its integration with other models. The lack of use of wavelet transform in option-implied information in facilitating market practitioners in improving the option valuation accuracy has been identified to be one of promising avenue to be explored, based on the reviews.

Offshore structures are exposed to wind-generated random wave loading in the ocean environment and the response is often non-Gaussian characteristics. Consequently, simple procedures for derivation the probability distribution of extreme responses are not available. The most accurate method for predicting the extreme responses in such condition is the Monte Carlo Time Simulation (MCTS) technique. However, it is computationally very demanding as reliable results require a large number of simulations. Currently, finding shows that an Efficient Time Simulation (ETS) method offered a more efficient technique without sacrificing accuracy. This study is aimed to improve the ETS method by taking advantage of their excellent correlation between extreme surface elevation and their corresponding structural responses. Prediction of the 100-year extreme responses between proposed models (ETS-Regression) and the MCTS method will be investigated to establish their level of accuracy. In this paper, the technique could be used for both drag-dominated and inertia-dominated (quasi-static) responses. © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Expensive aquafeed is a major problem in aquaculture, creating the need for a low-cost feed that provides ideal nutritional requirement to maximize growth performances. This study aims to formulate and evaluate two new optimized Zebrafish feeds (F1 and F2) using linear programming mathematical model, one of which incorporates two pigment rich fruit wastes (Pitaya peel and Roselle calyx) in the formulation. The model represents nutritional content and cost of each ingredient into linear equations, with the goal of finding ideal combination that satisfies the specific nutrient requirements. By systematically evaluating ingredient proportions, linear programming ensures that Zebrafish receives adequate nutrients at the lowest possible cost, making the feed development process more efficient and cost-effective. The novel feed formulations derived from the mathematical model were tested on the growth and pigmentation of Zebrafish in comparison to a commercial feed (control). Feed intake of F1 and F2 were generally found to be similar to the control feed, indicating the acceptability of the formulated feeds by the Zebrafish. Body weight and length of Zebrafish fed with F1 and F2 were comparable to Zebrafish fed with control feed (p > 0.05). Similarly, Zebrafish fed with F1 and F2 showed no significant differences in pigment intensity compared to Zebrafish fed with control feed (p > 0.05). The survival rate of fishes in all feeding groups were greater than 70 % with no significant differences (p > 0.05). Results obtained in this study illustrated the potential of mathematic linear programming and effectiveness of utilising pigment-rich fruit wastes in formulating an optimized economic aquafeed. © 2023 The Authors

Multimodal gait recognition for neurodegenerative diseases

In recent years, single modality based gait recognition has been extensively explored in the analysis of medical images or other sensory data, and it is recognised that each of the established approaches has different strengths and weaknesses. As an important motor symptom, gait disturbance is usually used for diagnosis and evaluation of diseases;moreover, the use of multi-modality analysis of the patient’s walking pattern compensates for the one-sidedness of single modality gait recognition methods that only learn gait changes in a single measurement dimension. Fusion of multiple measurement resources has demonstrated promising performance in the identification of gait patterns associated with individual diseases. In this paper, as an useful tool, we propose a novel hybrid model to learn the gait differences between three neurodegenerative diseases, between patients with different severity levels of Parkinson’s disease and between healthy individuals and patients, by fusing and aggregating data from multiple sensors. A spacial feature extractor (SFE) is applied to generating representative features of images or signals. In order to capture temporal information from the two modality data, a new correlative memory neural network (CorrMNN) architecture is designed for extracting temporal features. Afterwards, we embed a multi-switch discriminator to associate the observations with individual state estimations. Compared with several state of the art techniques, our proposed framework shows more accurate classification results. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.
