Sample-Optimal Quantum State Tomography for Structured Quantum States in One Dimension

While quantum state tomography (QST) remains the gold standard for benchmarking and verifying quantum devices, it requires an exponentially large number of measurements and classical computational resources for generic quantum many-body systems, making it impractical even for intermediate sized quantum devices. Fortunately, many physical quantum states often exhibit certain low-dimensional structures that enable the development of efficient QST. A notable example is the class of states represented by matrix product operators (MPOs) with a finite matrix/bond dimension, which include most physical states in one dimension and where the number of independent parameters describing the states only grows linearly with the number of qubits n. A recent study [1] has proved that, with Haar random projective measurements, only a O(n3) number of state copies is required to guarantee bounded recovery error of such an MPO state. While this result provides a formal evidence that quantum states with an efficient classical representation can be reconstructed with an efficient number of state copies, the number of state copies required is still significantly larger than the number of independent parameters in the classical representation. In this paper, we attempt to narrow this gap and study whether the number of state copies can saturate the information theoretic bound (i.e., O(n), the number of parameters in the MPOs) using physical quantum measurements. We answer this question affirmatively by using a class of Informationally Complete Positive Operator-Valued Measures (IC-POVMs), including symmetric IC-POVMs (SIC-POVMs) and spherical t-designs. For SIC-POVMs and (approximate) spherical 2-designs, we show that the number of state copies to guarantee bounded recovery error of an MPO state with a constrained least-squares estimator depends on the probability distribution of the MPO under the POVM but scales only linearly with n when the distribution is approximately uniform. The development of population intelligence has shown a great trend of a linear surge in recent years, and a large number of intelligent algorithms inspired by biology have been studied. Among them, differential evolution (DE) algorithms have attracted the attention of many researchers because of their simplicity, high efficiency, powerful search capability, etc. DE has strong exploitability and can approach the global optimum faster, but it cannot avoid the phenomenon of search stagnation and premature convergence. To address the drawbacks of DE, the two-stage bootstrap constrained differential evolution algorithm (TSGCDE) is proposed in this paper. In TSGCDE, instead of the traditional one population, the population is divided into two as a way to increase the diversity of the population. Divided into two stages, each stage searches for optimal solutions in different directions in different populations, and the optimal solutions and the bootstrap solutions generated by the populations in the two stages are bounded by each other’s bootstrap, which makes the DE have a more powerful optimal-seeking ability and easier to jump out of the local optimum. To validate the performance of TSGCDE, we conducted experiments on CEC2013 and CEC2014 benchmarks with some well-known algorithm variants, and the experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is competitive. © 2023, Taiwan Ubiquitous Information CO LTD. The rapid advancement of quantum technologies calls for the design and deployment of quantum-safe cryptographic protocols and communication networks. There are two primary approaches to achieving quantum-resistant security: quantum key distribution (QKD) and post-quantum cryptography (PQC). While each offers unique advantages, both have drawbacks in practical implementation. In this work, we introduce the pros and cons of these protocols and explore how they can be combined to achieve a higher level of security and/or improved performance in key distribution. We hope our discussion inspires further research into the design of hybrid cryptographic protocols for quantum-classical communication networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Group Fairness-aware Continual Learning (GFCL) aims to eradicate discriminatory predictions against certain demographic groups in a sequence of diverse learning tasks. This paper explores an even more challenging GFCL problem - how to sustain a fair classifier across a sequence of tasks with covariate shifts and unlabeled data. We propose the MacFRL solution, with its key idea to optimize the sequence of learning tasks. We hypothesize that high-confident learning can be enabled in the optimized task sequence, where the classifier learns from a set of prioritized tasks to glean knowledge, thereby becoming more capable to handle the tasks with substantial distribution shifts that were originally deferred. Theoretical and empirical studies substantiate that MacFRL excels among its GFCL competitors in terms of prediction accuracy and group fairness metrics. Ultrafast photoexcitation offers a novel approach to manipulating quantum materials. One of the long-standing goals in this field is to achieve optical control over topological properties. However, the impact on their electronic structures, which host gapless surface states, has yet to be directly observed. Here, using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we visualize the photoinduced evolution of the band structure in Biy(Pb1−xSnx)1−ySe(111) films from topological to trivial insulators. Following near-infrared ultrafast laser excitation, we observe that the topological surface state opens a substantial gap of up to 0.1 eV. Considering the topological phase diagram associated with lattice distortion and atomic displacement, we show that a uniaxial strain generated by the ultrafast optical pulse is sufficiently effective and strong for the observed topological phase transition. Our Letter highlights the potential of optical tuning of materials through laser excitation to control topological properties on ultrafast timescales.

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) manage physical processes through Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and are widely used in critical infrastructure (CI). Because of their wide use in CI, PLCs are a target for cyberattacks to disrupt CI. On CI and other networks, there is often a mix of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems. Detecting and classifying OT and IT assets on a network can help in providing targeted security measures for OT systems. Actively scanning for assets in ICS networks can lead to unexpected errors on PLCs. PLCs operate with limited resources and are notorious for producing errors or faults when presented with unexpected network packets. Special care must be taken when sending unsolicited network packets to these devices to avoid physical process interruption, catastrophic failures, even potential human injury. In this paper, we explore a collection of prevalent Machine Learning (ML) algorithms: k-Nearest-Neighbors (KNN), Support-Vector-Machines (SVM), Random Forest and AdaBoost in order to differentiate ICS network assets from IT machines solely from passive monitoring of network traffic flows. Furthermore, we integrate the proposed classification method into an autonomic architecture for continuous monitoring and identification of ICS assets in a SCADA network environment, both for offensive and defensive purposes.

The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into power grids presents a significant challenge for sustainability due to their dynamic charging demands and the need to accommodate renewable energy sources. Existing optimization methods often fail to adequately address the complexity of this problem. In this study, propose a novel approach that combines Sine Hunter-Prey Optimization (SHPO) with Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) to dynamically optimize EV charging for sustainable power grid operation. Traditional optimization methods struggle to capture the nonlinear and time-varying nature of EV charging demands and renewable energy availability. To overcome this limitation, SHPO's ability to efficiently explore complex solution spaces and GRUs' capability to model temporal dependencies in sequential data. This proposed method optimizes EV charging schedules by considering grid stability, renewable energy utilization, and cost minimization. Validating the approach using historical data on EV charging patterns, renewable energy generation, and grid conditions. Performance metrics include grid stability indices, renewable energy integration rates, and cost savings compared to baseline strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that the method outperforms traditional optimization techniques, leading to more sustainable and resilient power grid operation with 92% stability. Overall, this study contributes to advancing the modern methods in dynamic optimization of EV charging, paving the way for more sustainable transportation and energy systems. © 2024 IEEE.

The location of a sensor node is crucial for several uses of WSN, including environmental sensing, search and rescue, geographical routing and tracking, and so on. The accuracy with which individual sensor terminals in a wireless sensor system can be located has a substantial bearing on the network's overall effectiveness. Using information about the locations of anchor nodes gathered from a variety of measures to pinpoint the unknown target nodes' placements is known as localization. This is a problem classed as NP-hard, which means it cannot be solved using classical deterministic methods. To overcome this difficulty in wireless sensor networks, presented an enhanced version of a swarm intelligence technique called the whale optimization method. This implementation, using a quasi-reflected-based learning method, fixes the problems with the original whale optimization approach. In order to ensure that the proposed metaheuristic performs as well as existing state-of-the-art metaheuristics, it is evaluated using the same network architecture and experimental settings. Proposed method use a Gaussian-modified RSSI to achieve a more accurate reading of the range and a new whale optimization algorithm to optimize the positioning of the nodes to boost the positioning accuracy, both of which are designed to compensate for the shortcomings of the positioning algorithm of both Received signal strength indicator (RSSI) ranging model. Based on the results of 20 separate benchmark function tests, the upgraded whale algorithm outperforms the whale optimization method and other swarm intelligence systems. The suggested location algorithm provides more precise placement than the original RSSI method.
