In this paper, we analyse the properties of the standard circular hidden Markov model (HMM) on 2D shape recognition. We point out the limitations of the circular HMMs and further propose to impose the constraint on the relationship between the initial and final states of circular HMMs to improve the performance. We develop two modified Viterbi algorithms to implement our proposal. The proposed algorithms have been tested on the database of the MPEG-7 Core Experiments Shape-1, Part B. The experiments show that both proposed algorithms can achieve better performance than that of the standard circular HMM in terms of accuracy. In particular, the second proposed algorithm, which is faster than elastic matching algorithms, has much potential due to its accuracy and speed. © 2006 IEEE.

communications devices intended for use in security-critical applications must be rigorously evaluated to ensure they preserve data confidentiality. This process includes tracing the flow of classified information through the device's circuitry. Previous work has shown how this can be done using graph analysis techniques for each of the device's distinct operating modes. However, such analyses overlook potential information flow between modes, via components that store information in one mode and release it in another. Here we show how graph-based analyses can be extended to allow for information flow through sequences of consecutive modes. Copyright © 2006, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Wikis are a popular collaboration technology. They support the collaborative editing of web pages through a simple mark-up language. The wikipedia site is perhaps the best example of how wikis can be used. There are lots of different wikis, all with their own special extended features over the basic collaborative editing of web pages. In this paper we investigate how wikis can be made mobile;that is how wiki forms of collaborative editing can be achieved through mobile devices such as smart phones. Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous and powerful. Thus it is advantageous for people to get the benefits of wikis in a mobile setting. However, mobile devices present their own challenges such as limited screen size, bandwidth and battery life;they also have intermittent connectivity. We have investigated and built a prototype mobile wiki which addresses these issues and which enables collaboration through mobile devices. The system comprises a cut down wiki which runs on the mobile device. This communicated with a main central wiki to cache pages for off line use. This hoarding process also enables new pages to be created. On re-connection edited and new pages are synchronized with a main wiki server. Communication and hence hoarding is adaptive depending on the characteristics of the mobile device. When sitting in a powered cradle, eager downloading and synchronization of pages is supported. During mobile operation, pages are cached lazily on demand to minimize power use and to save the limited and expensive bandwidth. Finally a pluggable page rendering engine enables pages to be rendered in different ways to suit different sized screens. This enables simple collaborative working whilst on and offline through smart mobile devices. The prototype system has been implemented using .NET. © 2006. Wei-Che Huang.

Trust networks consist of transitive trust relationships between people, organisations and software agents connected through a medium for communication and interaction. By formalising trust relationships, e.g. as reputation scores or as subjective trust measures, trust between parties within the community can be derived by analysing the trust paths linking the parties together. This article describes a method for trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL). It provides a simple notation for expressing transitive trust relationships, and defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in a concise form and be computationally analysed. Trust measures are expressed as beliefs, and subjective logic is used to compute trust between arbitrary parties in the network. We show that TNA-SL is efficient, and illustrate possible applications with examples. Copyright © 2006, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Owners of systems and resources usually want to control who can access them. This must be based on having a process for authorising certain parties, combined with mechanisms for enforcing that only authorised parties are actually able to access those systems and resources. In distributed systems, the authorisation process can include negative authorisation (e.g. black listing), and delegation of authorisation rights, which potentially can lead to conflicts. This paper describes a method for giving authorisations through a delegation network, and where each delegation and authorisation is expressed in the form of a belief measure. An entity's total authorisation for a given resource object and access type can be derived by analysing the delegation network using subjective logic. Access decisions are made by comparing the derived authorisation measure with required threshold levels, which makes authorisations non-categorical. By setting the threshold level higher than the assigned measure of a single authorisation, it is possible to require multiple authorisations for accessing specific resources. The model is simple, intuitive and algebraic. © 2006, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

The local cluster neural network is a feedforward RBF network that has been implemented in analogue neural net chip. The LCNN chip can be trained by chip-in-the-loop training and this training method has been demonstrated to work efficiently. In order to increase the functionality of LCNN chip, we proposed on-chip training for the LCNN chip. In this paper, we describe two training algorithms -Gradient Descent and Probabilistic Random Weight Change, which are used in LCNN on-chip training simulations. We also present the experiment results from the simulations in multidimensional function approximation. The training convergence is investigated and analyzed. The circuite signal flow chart for these two algorithms are designed.

It is well known that taking the Web user profiles into account can enhance the effectiveness of Web mining systems. However, due to the dynamic and complex nature of Web users, automatically acquiring worthwhile user profiles was found to be very challenging. Ontologybased user profile can possess more accurate user information. This research emphasizes on acquiring search intentions information. This paper presents a new approach of developing user profile for Web searching. The model considers the user's search intentions by the process of PTM (Pattern-Taxonomy Model). Initial experiments show that the user profile based on search intention is more useful than the generic PTM user profile. Developing user profile that contains user search intentions is essential for effective Web search and retrieval. © 2006 IEEE.

Text mining is the technique that helps users find useful information from a large amount of digital text documents on the Web or databases. Instead of the keyword-based approach which is typically used in this field, the pattern-based model containing frequent sequential patterns is employed to perform the same concept of tasks. However, how to effectively use these discovered patterns is still a big challenge. In this study, we propose two approaches based on the use of pattern deploying strategies. The performance of the pattern deploying algorithms for text mining is investigated on the Reuters dataset RCVI and the results show that the effectiveness is improved by using our proposed pattern refinement approaches.

It is a big challenge to promise the quality of multidimensional association mining. The essential issue is how to represent meaningful multidimensional association rules efficiently. Currently we have not found satisfactory approaches for solving this challenge because of the complicated correlation between attributes. Multi-tier granule mining is an initiative for solving this challenging issue. It divides attributes into some tiers and then compresses the large multidimensional database into granules at each tier. It also builds association mappings to illustrate the correlation between tiers. In this way, the meaningful association rules can be justified according to these association mappings.
