Traditional approaches to evolvable hardware (EHW), in which the field programmable gate array (FPGA) configuration is directly encoded, have not scaled well with increasing circuit and FPGA complexity. To overcome this there have been moves towards encoding a growth process, known as morphogenesis, however existing approaches have tended to abstract away the underlying FPGA architecture. Although currently commercially available FPGAs are not the most evolution-friendly platforms, having complex architectures and issues with potentially damaging configurations, evolving circuits on commercially available devices without requiring a move to high-level building blocks is a necessary prerequisite for the adoption of EHW to solving real problems in electronic design, repair and adaptation. In this paper we present a morphogenetic EHW model where growth is directed by the gate-level state of the FPGA. We demonstrate that this approach consistently outperforms a traditional EHW approach using a direct encoding, in the number of generations required to find an optimal solution, and in its ability to scale to increases in circuit size and complexity. Issues in EHW problem solvability are also identified, and preliminary work is presented showing that a morphogenetic approach to EHW may be well suited to correcting damaged circuits

In this paper, we analyse the properties of the standard circular hidden Markov model (HMM) on 2D shape recognition. We point out the limitations of the circular HMMs and further propose to impose the constraint on the relationship between the initial and final states of circular HMMs to improve the performance. We develop two modified Viterbi algorithms to implement our proposal. The proposed algorithms have been tested on the database of the MPEG-7 Core Experiments Shape-1, Part B. The experiments show that both proposed algorithms can achieve better performance than that of the standard circular HMM in terms of accuracy. In particular, the second proposed algorithm, which is faster than elastic matching algorithms, has much potential due to its accuracy and speed.

This article tackles the collection selection problem from the query side. Queries are enhanced by mapping them to subjects in an ontology;the associated subject classification terms are then employed to retrieve collections. An experimental comparison was performed with the state of the art ReDDE system, which relies on estimates of collection size to rank collections. Although the research is preliminary, there is some support to the hypothesis that this approach mitigates the need for collection size estimates in collection selection.

communications devices intended for use in security-critical applications must be rigorously evaluated to ensure they preserve data confidentiality. This process includes tracing the flow of classified information through the device's circuitry. Previous work has shown how this can be done using graph analysis techniques for each of the device's distinct operating modes. However, such analyses overlook potential information flow between modes, via components that store information in one mode and release it in another. Here we show how graph-based analyses can be extended to allow for information flow through sequences of consecutive modes.

Dictionary based translation is a traditional approach in use by cross-language information retrieval systems. However, significant performance degradation is often observed when queries contain words that do not appear in the dictionary. This is called the Out of Vocabulary (OOV) problem. The common methods for translation selection for web-based translation always rely on word frequency calculation but the results are not always satisfactory. Our experiments show marked improvement in translation accuracy over other commonly used approaches.

The Kerberos-One-Time protocol is a key distribution protocol promoted for use with Javacards to provide secure communication over the GSM mobile phone network. From inspection we suspected a replay attack was possible on the protocol. To check this, we formally specified the protocol using Object-Z and then analysed its behaviour in the presence of an attacker using the symbolic analysis laboratory's model checker. To produce accurate results efficiently, our formalism included an abstraction of the protocol's data structures that captured just those characteristics that we believed made the protocol vulnerable. Ultimately, the model checker's analysis confirmed our suspicions about the protocol's weakness

Any program that measures quantities from its physical environment must compute using correct and consistent units of measurement. Such a program is described as well-measuring. In many systems, particularly embedded control software, paying inadequate attention to units of measurement can result in catastrophe. Unfortunately, current programming languages and tools provide little aid to the programmer attempting to establish or verify the well-measuring property. We present a program analysis technique for inferring and checking the units used within a program. The technique combines traditional Hindley-Milner-style type inference with the use of static single assignment (SSA) form to enable analysis of imperative programs.

This paper deals with the problem of network-based controller design for the given T-S fuzzy model. The effects of both network-induced delays which are assumed to be interval time-varying, and data packet dropout was investigated. Based on an integral inequality and a matrix inequality, a delay-dependent sufficient condition for the existence of a network-based controller is formulated in terms of a linear matrix inequality by adjusting two parameter matrices. And no model transformation is employed. Moreover, in order to obtain a less conservative design method of the network-based controller by solving the obtained nonlinear matrix inequalities and to avoid adjusting any parameter matrix, a novel iterative algorithm is proposed. An illustrative numerical example is also given to show the effectiveness of the proposed design method

It is well known that taking the Web user profiles into account can enhance the effectiveness of Web mining systems. However, due to the dynamic and complex nature of Web users, automatically acquiring worthwhile user profiles was found to be very challenging. Ontology-based user profile can possess more accurate user information. This research emphasizes on acquiring search intentions information. This paper presents a new approach of developing user profile for Web searching. The model considers the user's search intentions by the process of PTM (Pattern-Taxonomy Model). Initial experiments show that the user profile based on search intention is more useful than the generic PTM user profile. Developing user profile that contains user search intentions is essential for effective Web search and retrieval

The ability to accurately predict the lifetime of building components is crucial to optimizing building design, material selection and scheduling of required maintenance.
