Simplification and analysis of transitive trust networks

When transacting and interacting through open computer networks, traditional methods used in the physical world for establishing trust can no longer be used. Creating virtual network substitutes with which people, organisations and software agents can derive trust in other parties requires computerised analysis of the underlying trust networks. This article describes an approach to trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL), that consists of the three following elements. Firstly it uses a concise notation with which trust transitivity and parallel combination of trust paths can be expressed. Secondly it defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in this concise form. Finally it allows trust measures to be expressed as beliefs, so that derived trust can be automatically and securely computed with subjective logic. We compare our approach with trust derivation algorithms that are based on normalisation such as PageRank and EigenTrust. We also provide a numerical example to illustrates how TNA-SL can be applied. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

Trust networks consist of transitive trust relationships between people, organisations and software agents connected through a medium for communication and interaction. By formalising trust relationships, e.g. as reputation scores or as subjective trust measures, trust between parties within the community can be derived by analysing the trust paths linking the parties together. This article describes a method for trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL). It provides a simple notation for expressing transitive trust relationships, and defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in a concise form and be computationally analysed. Trust measures are expressed as beliefs, and subjective logic is used to compute trust between arbitrary parties in the network. We show that TNA-SL is efficient, and illustrate possible applications with examples.

XML information retrieval (XML-IR) systems differ from traditional information retrieval systems by using structure of XML documents to retrieve more specific units of information than the documents themselves. Users interact with XML-IR systems via structured queries that express their content and structural requirements. Historically, it has been common belief within the XML-IR community that structured queries will perform better than traditional keyword-only queries. However, recent system-orientated analysis has show that this assumption may be incorrect when system performance is averaged over a set of queries. Here, we test this assumption with users via a simulated work task experiment. We compare a keyword only interface with two user friendly XML-IR interfaces: NLPX, a natural language interface and Bricks, a query-bytemplate interface. This is the first time that a XML-IR natural language interface has been tested in user experiments. We compare the retrieval performance of all three interfaces and the usability of the two structured interfaces. Our results correspond to those of the system-orientated evaluation and indicate that structured queries do not aid retrieval performance. They also show that in terms of retrieval performance and usability the structured interfaces are comparable.

The efficient market hypothesis states that an efficient market immediately incorporates all available information into the price of the traded entity. It is well established that the stock market is not an efficient market as it consists of numerous traders with differing strategies and interpretations of information. However there is substantial evidence to suggest that the stock market does incorporate new information into prices. Unfortunately little research has focussed on the high frequency effect of real time news, across a broad base of assets. This paper investigates how the US, UK, and Australian markets incorporate all real time news, not just Press Announcements, Annual Reports, etc. We find that there is strong evidence to suggest that the markets do incorporate news quickly.

The Internet is different from traditional parallel computing environments, and Distributed Genetic Algorithms (DGAs) for the Internet need to be designed to address these differences. This paper presents a framework for Internet island model DGAs that uses adaptation methods to maintain efficiency and robustness in a volatile and dynamic run-time environment. The applicability of the methods is demonstrated on benchmark tests, and a real-world optimization problem in VLSI design. © 2005 ACM.

Association rule mining has made many achievements in the area of knowledge discovery in databases. Recent years, the quality of the extracted association rules has drawn more and more attention from researchers in data mining community. One big concern is with the size of the extracted rule set. Very often tens of thousands of association rules are extracted among which many are redundant thus useless. In this paper, we first analyze the redundancy problem in association rules and then propose a novel ATMS-based method for extracting non-redundant association rules. © 2005 IEEE.

Increasingly, academics are confronted with issues associated with assessment in large classes, arising from a combination of factors including higher student enrolments and the introduction of a trimester of study in many universities. The resulting increased time pressures on marking are causing many academics to search for alternative forms of assessment. University teachers are making more frequent use of multiple choice questions as a matter of expediency and in some cases, the quality of the assessment is being neglected. This describes the current situation in Information Technology. The aim of this paper is to provide practical guidelines in the form of a checklist for lecturers who wish to write tests containing multiple choice questions. Some of the points raised may be considered common knowledge for those teachers with a background in Education, however not all Information Technology lecturers would fall into this category. While the intended users of the checklist are Information Technology lecturers who, in general, are unlikely to be familiar with many of the matters discussed, teachers in other disciplines may find it a useful reference. In addition to the checklist, this paper also discusses the major criticism of multiple choice questions (that they do not test anything more than just straight recall of facts) and examines ways of overcoming this misconception. © 2005, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

Modern software engineering education is driven by an expectation that industry best practice and state of the art software technologies should not wait until graduation, but should appear early in the undergraduate curriculum. Moreover, students in our programmes have a strong, and well-justified belief that industrial strength project work is well-regarded by potential employers, and have had little difficulty expressing their preference for more relevant courses. In response, we have significantly enhanced the industry linkages and professional focus of our SE programme through a series of initiatives over a four year period. These initiatives have included: the introduction of a more modern development process employing multiple iterations;a novel approach to the first software engineering unit in which the students must extend an existing (phase 1) software system;the involvement of a live industry partner in the advanced software engineering unit, with regular and candid feedback from the company staff;and the provision of detailed support materials for version control and automated unit testing as part of our process infrastructure. This paper details our experiences during this period, the rationale for our process and course structure, and discusses the feedback on our approaches from students and local employers. © 2005, Australian Computer Society, Inc.

We propose a new authorisation architecture based on the extension to the anonymous authorisation framework proposed by Au et al., whereby a new entity, trustee, and a new concept, Key Binding Certificate (KBC), are introduced. In the architecture, the trustee issues a KBC to certify the association between a registered user's unique identity and the user's One-Task Authorisation Key (OTAK) where OTAK is used as the user's unique identifier to preserve anonymity. More importantly, the trustee acts as an identity escrow agent to provide anonymity revocation in a well-regulated manner. Hence, any service provider is able to make authorisation decision based on the Anonymous Attribute Certificates (AACs) issued by referee servers to anonymous users with a high level of assurance. The trustee also empowers the notion of chained referral in situations where users are required to obtain AACs from various referee servers. An improved protocol is also proposed, accompanied by an outline of its security analysis. © 2005 IEEE.
