Valence transition could induce structural, insulator-metal, nonmagnetic-magnetic and superconducting transitions in rare-earth metals and compounds, while the underlying physics remains unclear due to the complex interaction of localized 4f electrons as well as their coupling with itinerant electrons. The valence transition in the elemental metal europium (Eu) still has remained as a matter of debate. Using resonant x-ray emission scattering and x-ray diffraction, we pressurize the states of 4f electrons in Eu and study its valence and structure transitions up to 160 GPa. We provide compelling evidence for a valence transition around 80 GPa, which coincides with a structural transition from a monoclinic (C2/c) to an orthorhombic phase (Pnma). We show that the valence transition occurs when the pressure-dependent energy gap between 4f and 5d electrons approaches the Coulomb interaction. Our discovery is critical for understanding the electrodynamics of Eu, including magnetism and high-pressure superconductivity. © 2022, CC BY.

Replication is one of the mechanisms managing data since it improves data access and reliability. However, in recent years, with widely available, low-cost technology, the amount of various data grows rapidly. The problem is although we are packed with data, but we have lacked of knowledge. Nevertheless, if the impractical data is used in database replication, this will cause waste of data storage and the time taken for a replication process will be delayed. This paper propose a new algorithm namely Binary Vote Assignment on Grid Quorum with Association Rule (BVAGQ-AR) in order to handle fragmented database replication. BVAGQ-AR algorithm is capable of partitioning the database into disjoint fragments. Fragmentation in distributed database is very useful in terms of usage, reliability and efficiency. Handling fragmented database replication becomes challenging issue to administrator since the distributed database is scattered into split replica partitions or fragments. We address how to build reliable system by using the proposed BVAGQ-AR algorithm for distributed database fragmentation by using Malaysian Greater Research Network (MyGRANTS) data as a case study. The result shows that managing fragmented database replication through proposed BVAGQ-AR algorithm able to preserve MyGRANTS data consistency. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

The term Research software Engineer, or RSE, emerged a little over 10 years ago as a way to represent individuals working in the research community but focusing on software development. The term has been widely adopted and there are a number of high-level definitions of what an RSE is. However, the roles of RSEs vary depending on the institutional context they work in. At one end of the spectrum, RSE roles may look similar to a traditional research role. At the other extreme, they resemble that of a software engineer in industry. Most RSE roles inhabit the space between these two extremes. Therefore, providing a straightforward, comprehensive definition of what an RSE does and what experience, skills and competencies are required to become one is challenging. In this community paper we define the broad notion of what an RSE is, explore the different types of work they undertake, and define a list of foundational competencies as well as values that outline the general profile of an RSE. Further research and training can build upon this foundation of skills and focus on various aspects in greater detail. We expect that graduates and practitioners will have a larger and more diverse set of skills than outlined here. On this basis, we elaborate on the progression of these skills along different dimensions. We look at specific types of RSE roles, propose recommendations for organisations, and give examples of future specialisations. Automatic speech summarisation: A scoping review

Speech summarisation techniques take human speech as input and then output an abridged version as text or speech. Speech summarisation has applications in many domains from information technology to health care, for example improving speech archives or reducing clinical documentation burden. This scoping review maps the speech summarisation literature, with no restrictions on time frame, language summarised, research method, or paper type. We reviewed a total of 110 papers out of a set of 153 found through a literature search and extracted speech features used, methods, scope, and training corpora. Most studies employ one of four speech summarisation architectures: (1) Sentence extraction and compaction;(2) Feature extraction and classification or rank-based sentence selection;(3) Sentence compression and compression summarisation;and (4) Language modelling. We also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these different methods and speech features. Overall, supervised methods (e.g. Hidden Markov support vector machines, Ranking support vector machines, Conditional random fields) performed better than unsupervised methods. As supervised methods require manually annotated training data which can be costly, there was more interest in unsupervised methods. Recent research into unsupervised methods focusses on extending language modelling, for example by combining Uni-gram modelling with deep neural networks. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Recently, mining least association rule from the sequential data becomes more important in certain domain areas such as education, healthcare, text mining, etc. due to its uniqueness and usefulness. However, discovering such rule is a great challenge because it involves with a set of least items which usually holds a very low in term of support. Therefore, in this paper propose a model for mining sequential least association rule (2M-SELAR) that embedded with SELAR algorithm, and Critical Relative Support (CRS) and Definite Factor (DF) measures. The experimental results reveal that 2M-SELAR can successfully generate the desired rule from the given datasets. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Design of quasi-zero-stiffness metamaterials with ultra-wideband vibration isolation performance

Traditional single-function lightweight structure excels in a specific application scenario such as energy absorption, but is difficult to meet the multi-function requirements of the complex working environment for the high-end equipments. In this paper, a novel quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) metamaterial is proposed based on the topological design combining the positive and negative stiffness units, to achieve the multifunction integration of vibration attenuation and energy absorption. The quasi-static compression tests and shaker vibration isolation tests were carried out on the specimens prepared by stereolithography (SLA) and selective laser sintering (SLS) additive manufacturing techniques. The effects of structural parameters and base materials on the mechanical and vibration isolation properties of QZS metamaterials were systematically investigated. The proposed QZS metamaterial can realize the ultra-wideband vibration damping effect with the isolation band as wide as 5980 Hz, and the overall deformation of the structure can be adjusted by both mechanical load and temperature programming. In addition, the proposed QZS metamaterials have excellent repeatable energy absorption properties, maintaining 80 % load carrying capacity and 92 % specific energy absorption (SEA) after six loading cycles. Therefore, the QZS metamaterial can simultaneously achieve high load-bearing capacity and excellent vibration isolation performance, providing a new pathway to build multifunctional integrated lightweight structures.

Fault tolerance is a major concern to guarantee availability and reliability of critical services as well as application execution. Recently, due to rapid expansion of smart phone market and wireless communication environment, mobile devices are considered as resource for large scale distributed processing but there are several drawbacks, such as unstable wireless connection, limitation of data storage capacity, low communication bandwidth and frequent location changes. Cloud systems differ from these previous frameworks in that they are designed to support large numbers of customer-oriented applications, each with different quality of service (QoS) requirements and resource consumption characteristics. As resource providers, mobile devices can join and leave the distributed computing environment unpredictably. This interrupts the undergoing operation, and the delay or failure of completing the operation may cause a system failure. ABSTRACTThe urban physical examination is pivotal in diagnosing and resolving ‘urban diseases’. However, it encounters challenges including the intricate interconnections among heterogeneous data, the spatiotemporal differences in urban pathologies, and the multi-dimensional scenario-oriented representation. A knowledge graph is a potent technical instrument capable of depicting data replete with relational details and capturing the dependency ties among entities. In view of the above, this paper proposes a knowledge graph-based spatiotemporal data model for the urban physical examination. The model focuses on application scenarios, and builds a conceptual model with a three-layer architecture of ‘semantics-data-scenario’ and an ontology logic model structured as a hypergraph. This is intended to facilitate the management of spatiotemporal data throughout the process, while also enabling scenario-based spatiotemporal expression. Furthermore, this paper presents an in-depth analysis of the urban greenway construction case. The results show that the model organizes and expresses urban data and knowledge, covering multiple levels (such as themes, connotations, knowledge points, and indicators) and multiple granularities (macro-city, meso-region, micro-street), helping to understand urban physical examination from multiple dimensions. This not only provides a scientific basis for urban planners to make decisions but also sets an example for the practice of urban physical examination knowledge service.

We review one of the most versatile theoretical approaches to the study of time-dependent correlated quantum transport in nano-systems: the non-equilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism. Within this formalism, one can treat, on the same footing, inter-particle interactions, external drives and/or perturbations, and coupling to baths with a (piece-wise) continuum set of degrees of freedom. After a historical overview on the theory of transport in quantum systems, we present a modern introduction of the NEGF approach to quantum transport. We discuss the inclusion of inter-particle interactions using diagrammatic techniques, and the use of the so-called embedding and inbedding techniques which take the bath couplings into account non-perturbatively. In various limits, such as the non-interacting limit and the steady-state limit, we then show how the NEGF formalism elegantly reduces to well-known formulae in quantum transport as special cases. We then discuss non-equilibrium transport in general, for both particle and energy currents. Under the presence of a time-dependent drive – encompassing pump–probe scenarios as well as driven quantum systems – we discuss the transient as well as asymptotic behavior, and also how to use NEGF to infer information on the out-of-equilibrium system. As illustrative examples, we consider model systems general enough to pave the way to realistic systems. These examples encompass one- and two-dimensional electronic systems, systems with electron–phonon couplings, topological superconductors, and optically responsive molecular junctions where electron–photon couplings are relevant. A framework for discovering variable-length motifs in medical data streams

In this paper, we explore two key problems in time series motif discovery: releasing the constraints of trivial matching between subsequence with different lengths and improving the time and space efficiency. The purpose of avoiding trivial matching is to avoid too much repetition between subsequence in calculating their similarities. We describe a limited-length enhanced suffix array based framework (LiSAM) to resolve the two problems. We first convert the continuous time series to the discrete time series using the Symbolic Aggregate approXimation procedure, and then introduce two covering relations of the discrete subsequence: α-covering between the instances of LCP (Longest Common Prefix) intervals and β-covering between LCP intervals to support the motif discovery: if an LCP interval is βuncovered, its instances form a motif. The βUncover algorithm of LiSAM identifies the β-uncovered l-intervals, in which we introduce two LCP tabs: presuf and nextsuf to support the identification of the α-uncovered instances of an l-interval.
