As the issue of robustness of face recognition based on depth image sets, we propose that multiple Kinect images is being as a set of images, and depth data captured is used to automatically estimate poses and crop face area. Firstly, divide image sets into c subsets, and divide the images in all the subsets into image blocks of 4×4. Then, simulate images in sets as a form of image blocks, dividing in accordance with posture. Each set is represented using covariance matrix. Finally, the simulation of images in subsets is on Riemannian manifold. In order to classify, separately learnt SVM models for each image subset on the Lie group of Riemannian manifold and introduce a fusion strategy to combine results from all image subsets. We have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method on the three largest public Kinect face data sets CurtinFaces, Biwi Kinect and UWA Kinect. Compared to other advanced methods, the recognition rate has improved greater, the standard deviation is kept low, with robust to the number of image sets, image sub-setting number and spatial resolution. © 2017 IEEE.

Metallic zinc (Zn) is considered as one of the most attractive anode materials for the post-lithium metal battery systems owing to the high theoretical capacity, low cost, and intrinsic safety. However, the Zn dendrites and parasitic side reaction impede its application. Herein, we propose a new principle of regulating p -band center of metal oxide protective coating to balance Zn adsorption energy and migration energy barrier for effective Zn deposition and stripping. Experimental results and theoretical calculations indicate that benefiting from the uniform zincophilic nucleation sites and fast Zn transport on indium tin oxide (ITO), highly stable and reversible Zn anode can be achieved. As a result, the I−Zn symmetrical cell achieves highly reversible Zn deposition/stripping with an extremely low overpotential of 9 mV and a superior lifespan over 4000 h. The Cu/I−Zn asymmetrical cell exhibits a long lifetime of over 4000 cycles with high average coulombic efficiency of 99.9 %. Furthermore, the assembled I−Zn/AC full cell exhibits an excellent lifetime for 70000 cycles with nearly 100 % capacity retention. This work provides a general strategy and new insight for the construction of efficient Zn anode protection layer.

Big-data clustering: K-Means or k-indicators?

The K-means algorithm is arguably the most popular data clustering method, commonly applied to processed datasets in some "feature spaces", as is in spectral clustering. Highly sensitive to initializations, however, K-means encounters a scalability bottleneck with respect to the number of clusters K as this number grows in big data applications. In this work, we promote a closely related model called K-indicators model and construct an efficient, semi-convex-relaxation algorithm that requires no randomized initializations. We present extensive empirical results to show advantages of the new algorithm when K is large. In particular, using the new algorithm to start the K-means algorithm, without any replication, can significantly outperform the standard K-means with a large number of currently state-ofthe-A rt random replications. Structural controllability of complex networks has been a research focus in recent years. However, few works considered the structural controllability of biological networks, especially for dynamic biological networks. In this paper, structural controllability of one static and five dynamic transcriptional regulatory networks (TRNs) for Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) have been investigated. The five dynamic networks included two endogenous and three exogenous ones. We clarified the controllability properties of these networks, as well as explored the differences among different types of networks. Our results revealed that the structural properties of different types of networks are significantly different. We found that the TRNs are rather difficult to be fully controlled. However, the dynamic TRNs were relatively easier to be controlled than the static one, and one needs relatively more external inputs to control the exogenous TRNs than the endogenous ones. Based on the structural controllability analysis of subnetworks with the same sizes, as well as randomly perturbed networks by preserving degree distributions, we further illustrated that the structural controllability of the six networks may be mainly dominated by their degree distributions. Our investigations clarify the control properties of TRNs in S. cerevisiae, it provides some insights on real-world control of biological networks. © 2018 IEEE.

Organic aerosol (OA) is a key component to total submicron particulate matter (PM1), and comprehensive knowledge of OA sources across Europe is crucial to mitigate PM1 levels. Europe has a well-established air quality research infrastructure from which yearlong datasets using 21 aerosol chemical speciation monitors (ACSMs) and 1 aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) were gathered during 2013-2019. It includes 9 non-urban and 13 urban sites. This study developed a state-of-the-art source apportionment protocol to analyse long-term OA mass spectrum data by applying the most advanced source apportionment strategies (i.e., rolling PMF, ME-2, and bootstrap). This harmonised protocol was followed strictly for all 22 datasets, making the source apportionment results more comparable. In addition, it enables the quantifications of the most common OA components such as hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), cooking-like OA (COA), more oxidised-oxygenated OA (MO-OOA), and less oxidised-oxygenated OA (LO-OOA). Other components such as coal combustion OA (CCOA), solid fuel OA (SFOA: mainly mixture of coal and peat combustion), cigarette smoke OA (CSOA), sea salt (mostly inorganic but part of the OA mass spectrum), coffee OA, and ship industry OA could also be separated at a few specific sites. Oxygenated OA (OOA) components make up most of the submicron OA mass (average = 71.1%, range from 43.7 to 100%). Solid fuel combustion-related OA components (i.e., BBOA, CCOA, and SFOA) are still considerable with in total 16.0% yearly contribution to the OA, yet mainly during winter months (21.4%). Overall, this comprehensive protocol works effectively across all sites governed by different sources and generates robust and consistent source apportionment results. In this paper, we present one of the key KONFIDO project’s activities, the identification of key barriers and facilitators regarding eHealth solutions acceptance, focusing on security and interoperability. The methodology presented includes an end-user survey and an end-user workshop, engaging various stakeholders from Europe, in order to gain value out of their experience and insight in real-world healthcare settings. The analysis of the results provides a list of explicitly identified barriers and facilitators of adopting eHealth solutions in a Europe-wide scale, useful in the context of KONFIDO and beyond. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2018.

Impossible meet-in-the-middle fault analysis on the LED lightweight cipher in VANETs

With the expansion of wireless technology, vehicular ad-hoc networks(VANETs) are emerging as a promising approach for realizing smart cities and addressing many serious traffic problems, such as road safety, convenience, and efficiency. To avoid any possible rancorous attacks, employing lightweight ciphers is most effective for implementing encryption/decryption, message authentication, and digital signatures for the security of the VANETs. Light encryption device(LED) is a lightweight block cipher with two basic keysize variants: LED-64 and LED-128. Since its inception, many fault analysis techniques have focused on provoking faults in the last four rounds to derive the 64-bit and 128-bit secret keys. It is vital to investigate whether injecting faults into a prior round enables breakage of the LED. This study presents a novel impossible meet-in-the-middle fault analysis on a prior round. A detailed analysis of the expected number of faults is used to uniquely determine the secret key. It is based on the propagation of truncated differentials and is surprisingly reminiscent of the computation of the complexity of a rectangle attack. It shows that the impossible meet-in-the-middle fault analysis could successfully break the LED by fault injections.

Seawater is one of the most important CO 2 sequestration media for delivering value-added chemicals/fuels and active chlorine; however, this scenario is plagued by sluggish reaction rates and poor product selectivity. Herein, we first report the synthesis of nitrogen-doped BiOCl atomic layers to directly split carbon-sequestrated natural seawater (Yellow Sea, China) into stoichiometric CO (92.8 μmol h −1 ) and HClO (83.2 μmol h −1 ) under visible light with selectivities greater than 90 %. Photoelectrons enriched on the exposed BiOCl{001} facet kinetically facilitate CO 2 -to-CO reduction via surface-doped nitrogen bearing Lewis basicity. Photoholes, mainly located on the lateral facets of van der Waals gaps, promote the selective oxidation of Cl − into HClO. Sequestrated CO 2 also maintains the pH of seawater at around 4.2 to prevent the alkaline earth cations from precipitating. The produced HClO can effectively kill typical bacteria in the ballast water of ocean-going cargo ships, offering a green and safe way for onsite sterilization.

Wide-band gap (1.68 eV) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are important components of perovskite/Si tandem devices. However, the efficiency of wide band gap PSCs has been limited by their huge open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) deficit due to non-radiative recombination. Deep-level acceptor defects are identified as the major killers of V oc , and they can be effectively improved by passivation with ammonium salts. Theoretical calculation predicts that increasing the distance between F and −NH 3 + of fluorinated ammonium can dramatically enhance the electropositivity of −NH 3 + terminals, thus providing strong adsorption onto the negatively charged I A and I Pb anti-site defects. Characterizations further confirm that surface gradient passivation employing p -FPEAI demonstrates the most efficient passivation effect. Consequently, a record-efficiency of 21.63 % with the smallest V oc deficit of 441 mV is achieved for 1.68 eV-band gap inverted PSCs. Additionally, a flexible PSC and 1 cm 2 opaque device also deliver the highest PCEs of 21.02 % and 19.31 %, respectively.
