In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), asynchronous duty-cycle technique can significantly reduce energy consumption. However, packets in low-duty-cycle networks suffer high end-to-end (E2E) delay. Besides, recent experimental studies have also shown that links in WSNs are highly unreliable and radio irregularity has adverse impact on routing protocols. In this work, we introduce a dynamic data forwarding (DDF) scheme which combines a realistic link model with asynchronous duty cycle. Different from most of other routing protocols, each node in our solution first finds out a set of candidate nodes and then forwards packet to the first waking up node in this set. Our solution can reduce E2E delay, guarantee delivery ratio and improve network lifetime. We evaluate this dynamic data forwarding scheme with extensive simulations and the simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our solution.

Exchange protocols are an important theoretic basis to make secure electronic commerce and electronic business transactions possible, in which the fairness is a crucial property. To ensure and verify the property, a specific model is proposed, based on the extensive game with imperfect information. Fairness is built in the protocol game and the corresponding game tree. To verify the property, a tree analysis method is offered, and a linear time algorithm is given. As a case study, some flaws of ASW protocol are found. © 2011 IEEE.

Wavelet neural networks optimized by QPSO for network anomaly detection

In this paper, a novel hybrid algorithm based wavelet neural network (WNN) is proposed for network anomaly detection. This new evolutionary algorithm, which is based on a hybrid of Quantum-Behaved Particle Swarm Optimization (QPSO) and conjugate gradient algorithm (CG), is employed to train WNN. The Quantum-Behaved Particle Swarm Optimization, which outperforms other optimization algorithm considerably on its simple architecture and fast convergence, has previously applied to solve optimum problem. Due to the particles in the multi-dimensional space seeking the best position so quickly, it would result in the dangerous of stagnation, which would make the QPSO impossible to arrive at the global optimum. In order to overcome defects of QPSO, the improved hybrid algorithm was proposed. Experimental result on KDD 99 intrusion detection datasets shows that this WNN using the novel hybrid algorithm has high detection rate while maintaining a low false positive rate. Finding top-K influential nodes in social networks has many important applications. Previous work only considered that one node in the network can influence other nodes with a uniform probability, which doesn't take user preferences into account and greatly affects the accuracy of results. We propose a two-stage mining algorithm (GAUP) for mining most influential nodes on a specific topic. In the first stage, GAUP uses a collaborative filtering technique to determine user preferences on a topic. Then in the second stage, GAUP adopts a greedy algorithm to find top-K nodes in the network. Our evaluation shows that our GAUP algorithm can successfully mine top nodes for a given topic.

Transceiver-free object tracking is to trace a moving object without carrying any communication device in an environment where the environment is pre-deployed with some monitoring nodes. Among all the tracking technologies, RF-based technology is an emerging research field facing many challenges. Although we proposed the original idea, until now there is no method achieving scalability without sacrificing latency and accuracy. In this paper, we put forward a real-time tracking system RASS, which can achieve this goal and is promising in the applications like the safeguard system. Our basic idea is to divide the tracking field into different areas, with adjacent areas using different communication channels. So the interference among different areas can be prevented. For each area, three communicating nodes are deployed on the ceiling as a regular triangle to monitor this area. In each triangle area, we use a Support Vector Regression (SVR) model to locate the object. This model simulates the relationship between the signal dynamics caused by the object and the object position. It not only considers the ideal case of signal dynamics caused by the object, but also utilizes their irregular information. As a result it can reach the tracking accuracy to around 1m by just using three nodes in a triangle area with 4m in each side. The experiments show that the tracking latency of the proposed RASS system is bounded by only about 0.26s. Our system scales well to a large deployment field without sacrificing the latency and accuracy.

System virtualization, which provides good isolation, is now widely used in server consolidation. Meanwhile, one of the hot topics in this field is to extend virtualization for embedded systems. However, current popular virtualization platforms do not support real-time operating systems such as embedded Linux well because the platform is not real-time aware, which will bring low-performance I/O and high scheduling latency. The goal of this paper is to optimize the Xen virtualization platform to be real-time operating system friendly. We improve two aspects of the Xen virtualization platform. First, we improve the xen scheduler to manage the scheduling latency and response time of the real-time operating system. Second, we import multiple real-time operating systems balancing method. Our experiment demonstrates that our enhancement to the Xen virtualization platform support real-time operating system well and the improvement to the real-time performance is about 20%. © 2010 IEEE.

GPUs are many-core processors with tremendous computational power. However, as automatic parallelization has not been realized yet, developing high-performance parallel code for GPUs is still very challenging. The paper presents a novel translation framework designed for virtual execution environment based on CPU/GPU architecture. It addresses two major challenges of taking advantage of general purpose computation on graphics processing units (GPGPU) to improve performance: no rewriting the existing source code and resolving binary compatibility issues between different GPUs. The translation framework uses semi-automatic parallelization technology to port existing code to explicitly parallel programming models. It not only offers a mapping strategy from X86 platform to CUDA programming model, but also synchronizes the execution between the CPU and the GPUs. The input to our translation framework is parallelizable part of the program within binary code. With an additional information related to the parallelizable part, the translation framework transforms the sequential code into PTX code and execute it on GPUs. Experimental results on several programs from CUDA SDK Code Samples and Parboil Benchmark Suite show that our translation framework could achieve very high performance, even up to several tens of times speedup over the X86 native version. © 2010 IEEE.

Surveillance is a vital problem for harbor protection, border control or the security of other commercial facilities. It is particularly challenging to protect the vast near-coast sea surface and busy harbor areas from intrusions of unauthorized marine vessels, such as trespassing boats and ships. In this paper, we present an innovative solution for ship intrusion detection. Equipped with three-axis accelerometer sensors, we deploy an experimental wireless sensor network on the sea surface to detect ships. Using signal processing techniques and cooperative signal processing, we can detect the passing ships by distinguishing the ship-generated waves and the ocean waves. We design an intrusion detection system in which we propose to exploit spatial and temporal correlations of the intrusion to increase detection reliability. We conduct evaluations with real data collected by our initial experiments, and provide quantitative analysis on the detection system, such as the successful detection ratio and the estimation of the intruding ship velocity.

Many advanced hardware accelerations for virtualization, such as Pause Loop Exit (PLE), Extended Page Table (EPT), and Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV), have been introduced recently to improve the virtualization performance and scalability. In this paper, we share our experience with the performance and scalability issues of virtualization, especially those brought by the modern, multi-core and/or overcommitted systems. We then describe our work on the implementation and optimizations of the advanced hardware acceleration support in the latest version of Xen. Finally, we present performance evaluations and characterizations of these hardware accelerations, using both micro-benchmarks and a server consolidation benchmark (vConsolidate). The experimental results demonstrate an up to 77% improvement with these hardware accelerations, 49% of which is due to EPT and another 28% due to SR-IOV. © 2010 IEEE.
