design-based pedagogy offers educational frameworks for integrating knowledge from various disciplines to address practical issues. The use of 3D printing is on the rise, however, to facilitate the execution of combined STEM (Science, technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) assignments. However, limited research has investigated the challenges of operationalising this rapid prototyping technology in STEM education. In order to address the challenges, an investigation was conducted into the implementation of 3D printing in STEM classroom activities in Queensland, Australia's middle schools. A mixed-methods study was conducted in order to analyse survey data collected from an online questionnaire completed by 23 middle school teachers. Our findings lead to recommendations for addressing common challenges to facilitate 3D printing use on a routine basis. This study highlights the pivotal role of 3D printing as a foundational concept in integrated STEM teaching and learning methodologies. Furthermore, it acknowledges the capacity of 3D printing to transform the sociotechnical dynamics between researchers, educators, learners, ed-tech firms, and the government. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Spectrum competition and hardware complexity inherent in communication and radar systems can be alleviated by a dual-function radar communication (DFRC) systems. However, enhancing detection capabilities for maneuvering or weak targets remains a significant challenge, as traditional radar signal accumulation algorithms are not directly applicable to DFRC systems. This paper proposes a novel method that integrates signal accumulation and parameter estimation for target detection in DFRC systems. The approach employs an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform within a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) framework, enabling the detection of high-speed or weak targets through a computationally efficient signal accumulation process. The proposed method comprises three key steps: first, the designed signals combined with the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm for target angle estimation in the spatial domain. Second, a two-step signal accumulation process is introduced, which separately extracts range and velocity information for weak or high-speed targets. Third, acceleration is derived based on velocity information and accumulation time. We present explicit expressions and detailed analyses of various performance metrics, including accumulation output response for high-speed targets, multiple target scenarios, and cases with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Additionally, Cram4er-Rao bounds (CRBs) for azimuth, range cell, and velocity cell estimation in DFRC MIMO-OFDM systems are derived. Simulation results validate the proposed method, demonstrating its superior target detection performance compared to existing techniques. © 2014 IEEE.

Recently, smart agriculture utilizing Information and Communication technology (ICT) and robotics has gained attention. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standards Association is developing standard P2992 for smart agricultural data design. Research on crop feature representation exists but lacks universal methods and real-world application. This study proposes a method to represent crop growth and environments in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format based on P2992, applied to cooperative farmers’ greenhouse management. The method includes feature extraction, environment data acquisition, and JSON representation. As a result of the designed application, flower detection achieved 84.5% conformance and 86.1% recall, with a data size reduction of over 99% compared to traditional methods. Applications using temperature and crop data show potential for effective cultivation and sales management by using simple JSONata scripts, suggesting P2992's practicality and usefulness in real-world environments. © 2024 IEEE.

The collection of nuclear power plants operating data is the basis for subsequent fault diagnosis and obtaining the operating status of nuclear power plants, but equipment failures and external interference will lead to missing operating monitoring data, which will reduce the quality of the data and thus reduce the accuracy of the subsequent analysis results. To solve this problem, this paper utilizes the fact that nuclear power plants have accumulated a large amount of operational data and researches the method of generating adversarial imputation network (GAIN)-based imputation method for missing values of nuclear power plants' operational data. The generator in the model estimates the missing values by learning the distribution of the true values, and the discriminator in the model discriminates which values are true and which are generated with the help of a hint matrix. The hint reveals partial information about the missing original samples to the discriminator, which the discriminator uses to focus its attention on the quality of the imputation of particular data values. Finally, a training set and a test set were constructed for comparative experiments on the PCTran simulation platform by simulating the operational data of the AP1000 as an example. The experimental results demonstrate that the investigated algorithm achieves lower root mean square error (RMSE), verifying the feasibility and accuracy of the method. © 2024 The authors and IOS Press.

This study proposes a pioneering approach for anomaly detection in smart factories through the analysis of equipment acoustic data, leveraging the StyleGAN2-ADA deep generative model, originally developed for facial image generation, to analyze acoustic data. This method shows the potential to accurately estimate the severity and type of unusual sounds, allowing for early identification of equipment faults or wear and tear, and subsequently estimating their operational lifespan. Specifically, acoustic data from small motors are converted into Mel spectrograms, which are treated as images. By training the StyleGAN2-ADA model with these spectrograms and analyzing the resulting latent vectors, the technique classifies the nature and extent of anomalies in previously unseen acoustic data. Using unsupervised learning to analyze anomalous sounds holds significant potential for improving industrial monitoring and maintenance planning. © 2024 IEEE.

Recent studies have explored the integration of large language models (LLMs) into caregiving robots. The use of LLMs facilitates the generation of human-like natural dialogues and diverse, varied expressions. However, in case of a lack of direct and specific instructions from a user, gaining an accurate understanding of the user's intent is challenging, which may result in miscommunication. Thus, this study proposed a method to achieve robust communication even in the absence of direct instructions by considering the uncertainty in destination prediction probabilities. The proposed system leveraged GPT-4 to generate various Japanese speech content candidates and employed neighborhood components analysis to facilitate dimensionality reduction. Consequently, notable features of the rich linguistic embeddings were preserved while transforming them into manageable data. The system selected appropriate utterances based on the destination prediction probabilities. Furthermore, this study investigated changes in the speech content according to the variations in these probabilities, and the incorporation of uncertainty in communication was validated. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In recent years, especially in Europe, cloud-based railway signalling systems are becoming practical. These systems centrally control field equipment (such as signals and switches) from a central unit located remotely via a network, rather than being installed at the field equipment's location. To achieve a highly available and cost-effective cloud-based railway signalling system, a COTS (Commercial-Off- The-Shelf) based cloud railway signalling system have been proposed, which implements the central unit with cost-effective and high-performance COTS hardware. Railway signalling systems require high levels of safety and reliability. For safety, it is required that the occurrence of hazardous failures leading to train derailments or collisions be once every 10,000 to 100,000 years. Regarding reliability, it is required to maintain adequate availability of the system during the mission time (approximately 20 hours) and to avoid emergency stops as much as possible to ensure safety. This study discusses countermeasures against non-human-induced failures and human-induced failures, which are challenges for the aforementioned system. For non-human-induced failures, we focus on transmission interruptions lasting several seconds in the message transmission path between the central unit and the field terminals connected near each field equipment. For human-induced failures, we focus on the compromise of less than the majority of the multiplexed central units. We then propose countermeasures for these challenges. Next, we construct a Markov model to describe system behavior in various scenarios: normal conditions, transmission interruption, compromise, and simultaneous transmission interruption and compromise. Furthermore, based on these models, we analytically evaluate the reliability and safety of the proposed countermeasures. © 2024 IEEE.
