This paper describes the on-line voltage security assessment environment developed within the framework of the EU-sponsored OMASES project, as well as its application to the Greek Interconnected Power system. The heart of all computations is a fast time-domain method. Security is analyzed with respect to power transfers in critical corridors or power consumption in load areas. Results take on the form of either pre-contingency secure operation limits, or post-contingency load-ability limits, together with various diagnosis tips. Typical results obtained during the test phase of the project are reported.

In order to use data information in the Internet, it is necessary to extract data from web pages. An HTT tree model representing HTML pages is presented. Based on the HTT model, a wrapper generation algorithm AGW is proposed. The AGW algorithm utilizes comparing and correcting technique to generate the wrapper with the native characteristic of the HTT tree structure. The AGW algorithm can not only generate the wrapper automatically, but also rebuild the data schema easily and reduce the complexity of the computing.

In this paper, a powerful open Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) framework is proposed. Such an open framework is powerful since different sub-methods can be plugged into the framework to generate different specific Multiple Instance Learning algorithms. In our proposed framework, the Multiple Instance Learning problem is first converted to an unconstrained optimization problem by the Minimum Square Error (MSE) criterion, and then the framework can be constructed with an open form of hypothesis and gradient search method. The proposed Multiple Instance Learning framework is applied to the drug activity problems in bioinformatics applications. Specifically, experiments are conducted on the Musk-I dataset to predict the binding activity of drug molecules. In the experiments, an algorithm with the exponential hypothesis model and the Quasi-Newton method is embedded into our proposed framework. We compare our proposed framework with other existing algorithms and the experimental results show that our proposed framework yields a good accuracy of classification, which demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of our framework.

This paper researches seismic signals of typical vehicle targets in order to extract features and to recognize vehicle targets. As a data fusion method, the technique of artificial neural networks combined with genetic algorithm(ANNCGA) is applied for recognition of seismic signals that belong to different kinds of vehicle targets. The technique of ANNCGA and its architecture have been presented. The algorithm had been used for classification and recognition of seismic signals of vehicle targets in the outdoor environment. Through experiments, it can be proven that seismic properties of target acquired are correct, ANNCGA data fusion method is effective to solve the problem of target recognition.

In order to fulfill the functional requirements of multimedia management systems while achieving the efficiency and reliability at the same time, we adopt the component-based design to develop a complicated distributed multimedia management system called DMMManager in this paper. DMMManager integrates a set of core components for managing multimedia data, such as content-based retrieval for image and video data, and multimedia presentation design and rendering. Component-based design makes the reuse and share of the components easy and reliable, and thus avoids the waste of both time and man power in the development cycle. Moreover, new applications can be easily integrated into this system as a new development and utilize the existing components. Besides component reuse, the system is also designed to facilitate information reuse. For example, the output of the image/video retrieval component can be taken as the input for the multimedia presentation component. In addition, the use of subnetworks in our multimedia presentation design also enables the modularized reuse of the existing presentation models that are previously created.

In this paper, we propose a rate control mechanism for multimedia multicast streaming in the Internet. A single and optimal transmission rate that is adaptive to the network congestion, buffer occupancies, and the playback requirements of the member clients in the multicast group is allocated. We optimize the multicasting delivery in the Internet by improving the buffer occupancy of all clients for on-time presentation while using the minimal transmission rate. Scalable playback is used for the clients with low bandwidth capabilities in a heterogeneous environment. Simulation results show that the buffer capacity can be efficiently improved and fairness is ensured among the member clients.

This paper presents a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system that incorporates real-valued multiple instance learning (MIL) into the user relevance feedback (RF) to learn the user's subjective visual concepts, especially where the user's most interested region and how to map the local feature vector of that region to the high-level concept pattern of the user. RF provides a way to obtain the subjectivity of the user's high-level visual concepts, and MIL enables the automatic learning of the user's high-level concepts. The user interacts with the CBIR system by relevance feedback in a way that the extent to which the image samples retrieved by the system are relevant to the user's intention is labeled. The system in turn applies the MIL method to find user's most interested image region from the feedback. A multilayer neural network that is trained progressively through the feedback and learning procedure is used to map the low-level image features to the high-level concepts.

In this paper, an end-to-end real-time adaptive protocol for multimedia transmission is presented. The transmission rate is determined by the quadratic probing algorithm that can obtain the maximal utilization of the client buffer and minimal allocation of the network bandwidth. It is also coupled with a congestion control mechanism that can effectively decrease the packet loss rate during network congestion. We investigate the performance of our quadratic probing algorithm in different congestion levels under both Local Area Net (LAN) and Internet environment. Performance analysis reveals that our approach is more robust in avoiding overflow and underflow in different network congestion levels, and adapting to the changing network delays. Comparisons are made with the fixed rate approach and the rate by playback requirement approach. Experimental results show that the proposed real time protocol with rate adjusting quadratic probing algorithm is efficient in utilizing the network resources and decreasing the packet loss ratios.

We present a mechanism called the Markov model mediator (MMM) to facilitate the effective retrieval for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Different from the common methods in content-based image retrieval, our stochastic mechanism not only takes into consideration the low-level image content features, but also learns high-level concepts from a set of training data, such as access frequencies and access patterns of the images. The advantage of our proposed mechanism is that it exploits the structured description of visual contents as well as the relative affinity measurements among the images. Consequently, it provides the capability to bridge the gap between the low-level features and high-level concepts. Our experimental results demonstrate that the MMM mechanism can effectively assist in retrieving more accurate results for user queries.

In this paper, we propose a per-class queue management and adaptive packet drop mechanism in the routers for Internet congestion control. We model active queue management as an optimization problem and our proposed mechanism provides congestion control and fairness for different types of traffic flows. An optimal packet drop rate is obtained to maintain a relatively small queue occupancy, which provides a less queue delay delivery of packets. Simulations are conducted to compare our approach with the fixed packet drop rate approach. Moreover, the queue occupancy and the packet drop rates obtained are both upper bounded, which is meaningful for providing the class-based guaranteed delay services for real-time multimedia applications.
