Efficient utilization of network resources is essential in the provision of quality multimedia services. Different approaches have been proposed to shape the multimedia streams as a transmission schedule with smoothed traffic burst. In this paper, we concentrate on the problem of efficient use of bandwidth and client buffer. For this purpose, an optimal transmission schedule is proposed to provide the minimal allocation of the bandwidth and maximal utilization of the client buffer. Simulation results show that the shaping results obtained can dynamically adjust the transmission rate according to the buffer packet sizes and playback rates at the client to avoid the loss of packets, and at the same time achieve the minimal bandwidth allocation and maximal utilization of the client buffer.

The identification of the overlapped objects is a great challenge in object tracking and video data indexing. For this purpose, a backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm is proposed to assist an unsupervised video segmentation method called the "simultaneous partition and class parameter estimation" (SPCPE) algorithm to identify the overlapped objects in the video sequence. The backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can identify the split segment (object) and use the information in the current frame to update the previous frames in a backtrack-chain manner. The split algorithm provides more accurate temporal and spatial information of the semantic objects so that the semantic objects can be indexed and modeled by multimedia input strings and the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model. The MATN model is based on the ATN model that has been used in artificial intelligence (AI) areas for natural language understanding systems, and its inputs are modeled by the multimedia input strings. In this paper, we will show that the SPCPE algorithm together with the backtrack-chain-updation split algorithm can significantly enhance the efficiency of spatio-temporal video indexing by improving the accuracy of multimedia database queries related to semantic objects.

In this paper we present a new technique for on-line checking of FPGA-based sequential devices defined by their algorithmic state machines (ASMs). The technique utilizes specific properties of ASMs for achieving the totally self-checking goal with a low hardware overhead. This technique is based on the architecture that consists of two portions: a self-checking sequential device and a separate totally self-checking (TSC) checker. Each of these portions is implemented as a combination of an "evolution" block and an "execution" block. Comparison of code vectors transferred between these blocks provides for the totally self-checking property. The proposed technique does not require any redundant encoding of output words and uses a one-rail design, thereby drastically decreasing the required overhead. The paper presents overhead estimations and results for benchmarks for the proposed architecture.

Based on the analysis of the stiffness relation between the operational space and the fingertip space of multifingered hands, this paper provides a guideline of task-based compliance planning for multifingered hands. 2D and 3D examples are illustrated to show the characteristics of the task-based stiffness matrix. It is shown that some of coupling stiffness elements cannot be planned arbitrarily due to grasping geometry. Through the analytical results, it is concluded that the operational stiffness matrix should be carefully specified by considering the location of compliance center and the grasp geometry of multifingered hands for successful grasping and manipulation tasks.

For a multi-fingered hand to grasp an object, there are numerous ways to grasp it stably, and thus an optimal grasp planning is necessary to find the optimal grasp point for achieving the objective of the given task. First, we define several grasp indices to evaluate the quality of each feasible grasp. Since the physical meanings of the defined grasp induces are different from each other, it is not easy to combine those indices to identify the optimal grasping. In this paper, we propose a new generalized grasping performance index to represent all of the grasp indices as one measure based on a non-dimensional technique. Through simulations, we show that the proposed optimal grasp planning is resemblant to the physical sense of human grasping.

In this paper, an affinity-based approach that provides good similarity measures for Web document clustering to discover user access behavior on the World Wide Web (WWW) is proposed. The proposed approach generates the similarity measures for groups of Web documents by considering the user access patterns. Any clustering algorithm using better similarity measures should yield better clusters for discovering user access behavior. By utilizing the discovered user access behavior, for example, the companies can precisely target their potential customers and convince them to purchase their products or services in electronic commerce. An experiment on a real data set is conducted and the experimental result shows that the proposed approach yields a better performance than the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under the partitioning around medoid (PAM) method.
