Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation can provide an affordable way for inspecting microscopic phenomena, which is a powerful complement to real-world experiments. But the spatial scale of MD simulations is usually magnitudes smaller than experiment systems. In this paper, we present our work, redesigning the widely used inter-layer potential in structural superlubricity. By carrying out a specialized neighbor list for inter-layer potential computation, the total memory access amount is reduced significantly. Besides, a simple but efficient vectorization strategy is implemented based on the new neighbor list. In the extreme case, our work can scale to 38 million cores to achieve a sustainable performance of 61 PFLOPS, enabling a simulation of a superlubricity system of 32 μm2 with 7.2 billion atoms at 4.75 ns/day, which is 11,834 times of reported largest scale simulation in superlubricity systems in contact area and almost ten times faster in time-to-solution. Furthermore, we have done a simulation at 9 μm2 which results in consistency with real-world experiments and verified some theoretical predictions in the mesoscopic scale. © 2023 ACM.

An Affordable Sophisticated Frequency Control for Australian National Electricity Market system Considering Industry and Infrastructure Challenges

This industry-oriented paper proposes a novel sophisticated frequency control system for the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) power system considering the special design of its current automatic generation control system, which does not involve interconnectors between different power regions, resulting in technical challenges for both stability and security of the system. The proposed new method converts the NEM centralised frequency control system to a fully decentralised one with virtually consideration of interconnectors’ power, thus the stability and security would be improved and the high fluctuations in interchanged power smoothed without extra costs of infrastructure and procurement of frequency control ancillary reserves (FCASs). The novel idea is to model the interconnectors’ power deviation as unknown input to operator in each power regions, like load disturbances and renewable power variations, using dynamic observation techniques, for enabling the proposed method capabilities. The method is theoretically verified that it can enhance stability and security and stabilise both local frequencies and power exchanges. The experiment results confirm the capability of the proposed method for the NEM system and its superiority over the existing adopted approaches in industries. © 2023, CC BY.

Powered by the massive data generated by the blossom of mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) devices, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have developed both in accuracy and size in recent years. Conventional cloud-based DNN training incurs rapidly-increasing data and model transmission overheads as well as privacy issues. Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides a promising solution by facilitating DNN model training on edge servers at the network edge. However, edge servers often suffer from constrained resources and need to collaborate on DNN training. Unfortunately, managed by different telecoms, edge servers cannot properly collaborate with each other without incentives and trust. In this paper, we introduce PipeEdge, a scheme that promotes collaborative edge training between edge servers by introducing incentives and trust based on blockchain. Under the PipeEdge scheme, edge servers can hire trustworthy workers for pipelined DNN training tasks based on model parallelism. We implement PipeEdge and evaluate it comprehensively with four different DNN models. The results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art schemes by up to 173.98% with negligible overheads. © 2023 ACM.

Cross-chain Decentralized Applications (dApps) are increasingly popular for their ability to handle complex tasks across various blockchains, extending beyond simple asset transfers or swaps. However, ensuring all dependent transactions execute correctly together, known as complete atomicity, remains a challenge. Existing works provide financial atomicity, protecting against monetary loss, but lack the ability to ensure correctness for complex tasks. In this paper, we introduce Avalon, a transaction execution framework for cross-chain dApps that guarantees complete atomicity for the first time. Avalon achieves this by introducing multiple state layers above the native one to cache state transitions, allowing for efficient management of these state transitions. Most notably, for concurrent cross-chain transactions, Avalon resolves not only intra-chain conflicts but also addresses potential inconsistencies between blockchains via a novel state synchronization protocol, enabling serializable cross-chain execution. We implement Avalon using smart contracts in Cosmos ecosystem and evaluate its commitment performance, demonstrating acceptable latency and gas consumption even under conflict cases.

Since the advent of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain, as their underlying technologies,has drawn a massive amount of attention from both academia and the industry. This ever-evolving technology inherits the “genes” of distributed systems, offering significant advantages of immutability, transparency,auditability, and tamper-resistance. These benefits help blockchain re-establish public confidence, and hold the significant promise of reliable information sharing and value transfer. Therefore, blockchain has become the foundation of crucial strategic deployments in countries across the world, and the fundamental basis for building the next generation Web 3.0 — “Internet of value”. In this article, we will start with unraveling the essential ingredients of blockchain technology, and showing the characteristics of each of these ingredients in the context of distributed systems. We will then present the core technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to unleashing its full potential, including its performance, scalability, and cross-chain interoperability. Finally, we will introduce the recent developments of blockchain systems, and discuss the future trends of the blockchain ecosystem.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have many different applications in industries such as intrusion detection, healthcare, and environmental monitoring. To ensure their success, it is essential to establish trust among the sensor nodes to enhance trustworthiness, collaboration, and security. However, current trust management methods for large-scale WSNs have several drawbacks, including low dependability, high communication, and memory overhead, which make them ineffective. To address these issues, a new approach has been proposed, which uses trust evaluation-based machine learning for WSNs. This method involves determining trust attributes using a model and then creating a new algorithm based on machine learning to categorize and combine these trust features into a final trust value. This trust value can be used in decision-making to improve the effectiveness of WSNs.

Millimeter-wave communications are suitable for application to massive multiple-input multiple-output systems in order to satisfy the ever-growing data traffic demands of the next-generation wireless communication. However, their practical deployment is hindered by the high cost of complex hardware, such as radio frequency (RF) chains. To this end, operation in the beamspace domain, through beam selection, is a viable solution. Generally, the conventional beam selection schemes focus on the feedback and exhaustive search techniques. In addition, since the same beam in the beamspace may be assigned to a different user, conventional beam selection schemes suffer serious multi-user interference. In addition, some RF chains may be wasted, since they do not contribute to the sum-rate performance. Thus, a fingerprint-based beam selection scheme is proposed to solve these problems. The proposed scheme conducts offline group-based fingerprint database construction and online beam selection to mitigate multi-user interference. In the offline phase, the contributing users with the same best beam are grouped. After grouping, a fingerprint database is created for each group. In the online phase, beam selection is performed for purposes of interference mitigation using the information contained in the group-based fingerprint database. The simulation results confirm that the proposed beam selection scheme can achieve a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio and sum-rate performance which is close to those of a fully digital system, and having much higher energy efficiency. © 2022 IEEE.

First wetland mapping at 10-m spatial resolution in South America using multi-source and multi-feature remote sensing data

Wetland degradation has been accelerating in recent years globally. Accurate information on the geographic distribution and categories of wetlands is essential for their conservation and management. Despite being the world′s fourth largest continent, South America has limited research on wetland mapping, and there is currently no available map that provides comprehensive information on wetland distribution and categories in the region. To address this issue, we used Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and SRTM data, developed a sample collection method and a wetland mapping method with a collection of multi-source features such as optical features, polarization features and shape features for South American wetlands. We produced a 10-m resolution wetland map based on the Google Earth Engine(GEE) platform. Our Level-1 wetland cover map accurately captured six wetland sub-categories with an overall accuracy of 96.24% and a kappa coefficient of 0.8649, while our Level-2 water cover map included five sub-categories with an overall accuracy of 97.23% and a kappa coefficient of0.9368. The results show that the total area of existing wetlands in South America is approximately 1,737,000 km~2, which is6.8% of the total land area. Among the ten wetland categories, shallow sea had the largest area(960,527.4 km~2), while aquaculture ponds had the smallest area 1513.6 km~2. Swamp had the second largest area(306,240.1 km~2). Brazil, Argentina,Venezuela, Bolivia, and Colombia were found to have the largest wetland areas, with Brazil and Colombia having the most diverse wetland categories. This product can serve as baseline data for subsequent monitoring, management, and conservation of South American wetlands.
