First wetland mapping at 10-m spatial resolution in South America using multi-source and multi-feature remote sensing data

Wetland degradation has been accelerating in recent years globally. Accurate information on the geographic distribution and categories of wetlands is essential for their conservation and management. Despite being the world′s fourth largest continent, South America has limited research on wetland mapping, and there is currently no available map that provides comprehensive information on wetland distribution and categories in the region. To address this issue, we used Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 and SRTM data, developed a sample collection method and a wetland mapping method with a collection of multi-source features such as optical features, polarization features and shape features for South American wetlands. We produced a 10-m resolution wetland map based on the Google Earth Engine(GEE) platform. Our Level-1 wetland cover map accurately captured six wetland sub-categories with an overall accuracy of 96.24% and a kappa coefficient of 0.8649, while our Level-2 water cover map included five sub-categories with an overall accuracy of 97.23% and a kappa coefficient of0.9368. The results show that the total area of existing wetlands in South America is approximately 1,737,000 km~2, which is6.8% of the total land area. Among the ten wetland categories, shallow sea had the largest area(960,527.4 km~2), while aquaculture ponds had the smallest area 1513.6 km~2. Swamp had the second largest area(306,240.1 km~2). Brazil, Argentina,Venezuela, Bolivia, and Colombia were found to have the largest wetland areas, with Brazil and Colombia having the most diverse wetland categories. This product can serve as baseline data for subsequent monitoring, management, and conservation of South American wetlands.

Transfer Task-Averaged Natural Gradient for Efficient Many-Task Optimization

With the increasing requirement for computational efficiency in evolutionary algorithms when tackling many optimization tasks concurrently, many-task optimization (MaTO) has gained much attention in recent years. It involves extracting and transferring the knowledge from successful search experiences across many tasks. As the number of tasks and variable scale grows in MaTO, the need for efficient knowledge transfer in evolutionary algorithms becomes indispensable. In this paper, we present a task-averaged natural gradient-assisted natural evolution strategy (TNG-NES) to deal with MaTO efficiently. The task-averaged natural gradient captures how a group of task distributions evolves, considering their overall trends of mean and covariance. This can accelerate the optimization process across all tasks by leveraging the evolutionary similarities among multiple task search distributions. Notably, TNG-NES exhibits linear computational complexity concerning the number of tasks for knowledge transfer. Additionally, to adaptively utilize task-averaged natural gradient for distribution evolution and mitigate negative transfer, we introduce a transfer adaptive control mechanism for TNG-NES. We conducted extensive experiments on CEC19-MaTO, WCCI22-MaTO, our proposed large-scale MaTO benchmark suite, and real-world applications. The results validate the effectiveness of TNG-NES, outperforming state-of-the-art MaTO algorithms. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

Emotional space refers to a multi-dimensional emotional model that describes a group of subjective feelings or emotions. Since the existing discrete emotional space is mainly aimed at human’s primary emotions, it cannot describe the complex emotions evoked when watching movies. In order to solve this problem, an emotional fusion space for videos was constructed by selecting movies and TV dramas with rich emotional semantics as the research objects. Firstly, emotional words based on movie and TV drama videos are acquired and analyzed by using subjective evaluation and semantic analysis methods. Then, the emotional word vectors obtained from the above analysis are fused, reduced dimension by t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding(t-SNE) algorithm, and clustered by bisecting K-means clustering algorithm to get a discrete emotional space for movie and TV drama videos. This emotional fusion space can obtain different categories by changing the value of the emotion classification number without re-labeling and calculation.

Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) is a network protocol that has the potential to enhance network performance, which is crucial in grid computing systems to improve the overall system's performance. It utilizes multiple network paths between machines to achieve a high network performance. This protocol can also improve the connectivity of multiple servers that may be in different data centers by combining multiple network paths. One of the main issues of MPTCP is the path for ACK (acknowledgment) packets, which take the same path where original packets come from. When networks have different round trip times (RTTs), MPTCP may dispatch the ACK packet through a longer path, which is inefficient. HayACK solves this issue by selecting the path with the least RTTs. However, HayACK may suffer from inconsistent packets because of middleboxes, which are intermediary devices between the source and the destination that process network packets. These middleboxes may discard MPTCP packets because of inconsistent sequence numbers of HayACK packets, which is a product of HayACK's path selection. This study aims to investigate the usefulness of HayACK for high-performance data transfer when using multiple paths in real network environments and the influence of middleboxes on HayACK. Our investigation was conducted using various network paths by preparing many client hosts with different IP addresses and one server. The influence of middleboxes is determined by checking the probe packets passed through, changed, or discarded. Dynamic graphs have emerged as a pivotal data structure underpinning real-world network applications. Against this backdrop, detecting anomalies in dynamic graphs has become particularly important, serving as a foundation for multiple downstream tasks. However, existing research has been limited by only considering the simplistic spatial features of the target edge and being confined to local spatial structures. This confinement imposes significant limitations on model performance. Furthermore, current models have not adequately addressed the issue of missing node attributes, relying solely on one-hot encoding to represent nodes, which restricts the expressive capacity of spatial features. In response to these challenges, we propose an end-to-end transformer-based spatio-temporal graph neural network model called TransSTGNN for detecting anomalous edges on dynamic graphs. This model innovatively integrates the graph convolution network with the transformer model to extract multi-dimensional spatial features of the target edge. Simultaneously, TransSTGNN incorporates a novel node enhancement module that reinforces the representation capability of spatial features by encoding the spatial attributes of nodes, effectively tackling the problem of missing node attributes. Extensive experiments confirm that TransSTGNN surpasses the state-of-the-art methods in anomaly detection on six benchmark datasets and effectively resolves the challenges mentioned above. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Identifying the behavior and intent of various Internet of Things (IoT) devices distributed across different environments is a challenge. The previous centralized modeling approach ran the risk of invading privacy. This study develops a federated learning approach enhanced by Long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to improve the accuracy of modeling the behavior of iot devices in decentralized networks. We extract periodic communication features locally at each node, focusing on relevant behavior sequences while protecting privacy. Applying LSTM to these periodic sequences captures the temporal dynamics necessary for behavioral modeling. The federated LSTM model then aggregates the locally learned behavior patterns to classify device sequences and interactions without sharing the raw data. Experiments show that this method can accurately identify the key behaviors of iot devices. By focusing on periodic communication, our technology enables collaborative device behavior identification across distributed nodes without compromising user privacy. This provides a pathway for privacy-protecting behavioral intelligent federated learning in iot environments.

An increasing number of platforms for Business Process Automation (BPA) have been developed in recent years, including open-source and proprietary solutions. However, there are still some unsolved problems and limitations related to the adoption of these solutions, which include: vendor lock-in, limited UI/UX, limited integration, outdated technology stack, and lack of support for non-process features. The framework presented in this paper addresses these problems and limitations by providing an open-source platform to facilitate the development of process-aware information systems (PAISs) based on code generation techniques. The platform is capable of generating a functional process-aware Web application from a business process model defined in BPMN. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other software tool that generates fully functional process-aware Web applications. The presented framework has been evaluated in the academy and industry and used to develop dozens of non-profit and commercial process-aware applications.
