The importance of accurate flood forecasting is rising as climate change makes it more difficult to predict when and where floods will occur. Flood predictions use supervised machine learning models, and flood levels are being tracked via the Internet of Things (IoT). Despite advancements in data-driven hydrological forecasting, producing reliable flood forecasts remains challenging. This research paper explores the possibility of utilizing adaptive deep learning with weak supervision to predict flooding in coastal cities that are equipped with Internet of Things technology. This approach uses weakly supervised learning for data labeling and enhancement, a bidirectional long-short-term memory (LSTM) RNN for time-series prediction and classification, and adaptive learning to handle seasonality. The results of the proposed system show that flood forecasting accuracy could be improved by 40% compared to the baseline models. © 2023 IEEE.

Remaining useful life (RUL) prediction plays an essential role in the prognostic health management of cutting tools, which aims to ensure workpiece surface quality and extend tool life. Although deep learning methods have exhibited great performance in the field of tool RUL prediction, establishing an effective deep learning model usually requires extensive training data, and collecting substantial tool failure data in the actual milling process is time-consuming and expensive. Alternatively, constructing robust tool degradation features and developing a lightweight prediction model might be more practical and deployment-friendly. Therefore, this paper introduces an optimal tool degradation feature extraction method with a tailored dimension reduction algorithm named dynamic-inner canonical correlation analysis (DiCCA), where the temporal dependency and dynamic information hidden in the sequential tool degradation process are captured for the RUL prediction of cutting tools. Experimental studies are performed with a milling dataset, and the results indicate that the optimal tool degradation feature extracted by the proposed DiCCA can explicitly reflect the degradation process of cutting tools, and accurate RUL prediction can be achieved through a lightweight BP model. © 2024 IEEE.

3D city models are an important cornerstone in the development of digital twin cities, allowing for various analyses and simulations. CityGML, as an open standard for 3D city models, emphasizes five main aspects: scale or level of detail (LoD), semantics, geometry, topology, and appearance. One of the important elements in CityGML 3D city models is representation of vegetation. Vegetation in CityGML, especially individual trees, is still limited in terms of detail and resolution, reducing its effectiveness for specific applications. This paper proposes a graph-based conceptual model for individual trees that conforms to the CityGML v2.0 specification. The model refers to the morphological structure of a tree consisting of roots, trunk, and crown (including branches, twigs, and leaves), and considers the five main aspects of CityGML. By enhancing semantic information and geometric details, the model aims to provide an information-rich and realistic representation of individual trees in a 3D city environment. The 3D tree model created based on this conceptual model may be applicable in the development of digital twin urban forests and virtual forest simulations that utilize immersive technologies such as the metaverse. This research opens up new opportunities in the development of solitary vegetation objects through CityGML ADE by including more detailed semantic and topological information. © Author(s) 2024.

Magnetic lead screws (MLSs) are lead screws that enable non-contact mechanical power transmission through magnetic force. We have proposed a simple-structured MLS constructed using arc-shaped permanent magnets magnetized radially. However, this structure reduces the opposing surfaces of the screw threads that generate magnetic attraction force, leading to decreased thrust and stiffness. Therefore, this paper presents a new MLS design with a magnetic flux-concentrating structure that allows the entire circumference of the opposing surfaces of the thread to be used for thrust generation. We calculate the thrust characteristics of the proposed MLS using a three-dimensional finite element method, reporting that it generates higher thrust compared to that of a conventional MLS with the same size. © 2024 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Through their websites, a lot of businesses and people directly offer their services. The way in which these services are offered may affect users emotionally. A website that elicits pleasant emotions in its users can make them feel happy, engaged, trustworthy, or satisfied. Well-known for its ability to analyze customer emotional demands and define the connection between emotions and product design aspects, Kansei engineering (KE) is a user-centered technology. The development of e-learning software, e-learning authoring tools, learning management systems, and other related technologies is currently a major investment made by universities, training centers, and government bodies. Even though there are many advantages for educators using e-learning technology, getting students to use these services can be difficult, especially for the e-learning websites of Malaysia’s higher education institutions (HEIs). Few standards exist for user interface (UI) design that encourages emotional connection on the e-learning platforms of Malaysian HEIs. Students were disengaging from e-learning platforms in substantial numbers because of this issue. Hence, this paper aims to explore users’ needs and emotions while using an HEI website and produce a new guideline for HEIs e-learning website. Using the card sorting technique, a visualization pattern has been presented as a design guideline for an e-learning graphical user interface (GUI) website for HEIs in Malaysia. Positive outcomes have been obtained by implementing the suggested guideline on the GUI of the prototype website. This paper presents a novel two-stage approach to enhance the quality and privacy of X-ray medical images. The first stage leverages generative adversarial networks (GANs) for effective denoising, eliminating noise and artifacts from X-ray images while improving the visibility of critical anatomical structures. Subsequently, number-Theoretic transform (NTT) polynomial multiplication is integrated with Kyber to accelerate the encryption and decryption of the denoised X-ray images. This encryption safeguards the privacy of sensitive patient data and provides resilience against potential quantum computing attacks, ensuring long-Term data security. Implementing Kyber-based encryption and decryption on a graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture significantly reduces latency, enabling real-Time and secure access to critical healthcare information. © 2024 IEEE.

Doppler sensors are well known, the theory about them has been developed and many years of use have proven the effectiveness of such devices. At the same time, it is possible to utilize such sensors in a non-traditional way, which could allow expanding the range of their usage, creating new technologies and projects. This paper is devoted to one of such cases – the creation of a digital information transmission system consisting of two Doppler sensors performing in the 24 GHz band. The article describes the design procedure, provides recommendations for using such a system, and presents the results of the study of the system key parameters. © 2024 IEEE.

As the licensed spectrum has been scarce, the unlicensed spectrum is deemed as a strong supplement to the licensed band, particularly for diversified sensors connected to the metaverse. Moreover, as one of the key components in future communication networks, the massive connection is crucial to the massive sensors connected to the metaverse with object of maximizing the number of connected devices while minimizing their power consumption. Therefore, both licensed and unlicensed bands are used for metaverse users and sensors in this paper. First, a feasible implementation framework is proposed to minimize power consumption and maximize the number of connected sensors while guaranteeing their data rate requirements. Accordingly, a joint power, spectrum allocation and user association scheme is proposed. Finally, the simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.
