In this work, we study a system with a sensor forwarding status update to the receiver through an error-prone channel, and the receiver sends the transmission results to the sensor via a reliable link. We assume both transmission links suffer from random delays. We use Age of Information (AoI) to measure the freshness of the status information at the receiver. Our goal is to design a sampling policy that minimizes the expected time average AoI when the channel statistics are unknown. The problem is reformulated into a renewal-reward process optimization, and an online algorithm based on the Robbins-Monro algorithm is proposed. We prove that when the forward and backward transmission delays are bounded, the AoI difference between the online algorithm and the optimal policy decays with rate $\mathcal{O}(\ln K/K)$ , where $K$ is the number of successful transmissions. Simulation results validate the performance of our proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we aim to acquire “periodic events” that represent significant actions that are happened by groups of people in particular seasons or timing. Recently, the importance of knowledge acquisition is increasing. Many studies about human action knowledge and temporal commonsense knowledge have been carrying out. We need a dataset to acquire periodic events. However, manually building the dataset with human attribute labels is costly. Therefore, we construct a human attribute classifier of Twitter users and create a large labeled tweets dataset automatically. Periodic events with specific human attributes are collected with our proposed method. Finally, we obtained commonsense event knowledge; e.g., “Students often go to college at 1 P.M.” and “Workers often work overtime on weekdays”.

Evolution of “Michigan Probes” has enabled unraveling the connectivity of neurons at cellular resolution and their dynamic interaction within and across brain areas that underlie behavioral and cognitive functions. Recently, micro-LEDs were monolithically integrated for optogenetic neuromodulation at scale without requiring external optical fiber connection. The ‘hectoSTAR’ micro-LED optoelectrode features 256 recording electrodes and 128 stimulation micro-LEDs in four silicon micro-needle shanks, covering a large volume with 1.3-mm × 0.9-mm cross-sectional area located as deep as 6 mm inside the brain. Technical challenges to overcome in scaling of optogenetic probes will be discussed, followed by future direction.
