This study investigated the effects of two-step activated carbon cloth (CC) on the syntrophic microbial association during anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipal sludge. A simple two-step activation, acid pretreatment (H2SO4/HNO3) followed by air calcination (550°C), was used to convert commercial untreated CC (U-CC) into high performance activated CC (A-CC). Biochemical methane potential (BMP) assays conducted at different CC dosages indicated that A-CC, at a dose of 0.80 g A-CC {1.48 g A-CC/g-VS (volatile solids)substrate}, enhanced methane yield from by 3.7 times and reduced the lag phase up to 15.6-fold, compared to non-CC control within 3 days. Characterization of CC surfaces and kinetic modeling indicated a 435-times increased A-CC pore size area (Barrett, Joyner, and Halenda, BJH) with the potential to promote electron transfer and accelerate kinetic rates of methane production. Consistent with these results, microbial community structure analysis of CC surfaces indicated rapid adherence of methanogenic archaea and bacterial syntrophs to A-CC within 3 days. Multi-variate statistical analyses indicated that these populations were highly enriched on 0.80 g A-CC dosage compared to controls. Based on these results it can be concluded that A-CC provides a robust selective environment for syntrophic energy metabolism driving enhanced methane production from municipal sludge. © 2022, The Authors. Studying the real-time dynamics of strongly correlated systems poses significant challenges, which have recently become more manageable thanks to advances in density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and tensor network methods. A notable development in this area is the introduction of a complex-time evolution scheme for tensor network states, originally suggested for solving Anderson impurity model and designed to suppress the growth of entanglement under time evolution. In this study, we employ the complex-time evolution scheme to investigate the dynamics of one-dimensional spin systems, specifically the transverse-field Ising model (TFIM) and the XXZ model. Our analysis revisits the dynamic critical exponent z of the TFIM and explores the dynamical structure factor in both gapped and gapless states of the XXZ model. Importantly, the complex-time evolution reproduces the results of real-time evolution while mitigating the rapid growth of quantum entanglement typically associated with the latter. These results demonstrate that the combination of complex-time evolution and extrapolation provides a robust and efficient framework for studying the dynamics of complex quantum systems, enabling more comprehensive insights into their behavior. © 2025, CC BY.

This paper presents an efficient 3-level buck converter with cascode power stage and the proposed shared charge pump intermediate voltage (VMID) regulator. The proposed charge pump (CP) shares flying capacitor CFLY and power switches in the 3-level buck converter to generate VMID=VIN/2 achieving both small size and low loss. Also, conversion ratio (CR) VOUT/VIN is enhanced by using proposed adaptive-on/off-time (AOOT) control scheme. The control scheme switches between adaptive-on-time (AOnT) and adaptive-off-time (AOffT) mode according to the target CR. The proposed 3-level buck converter is implemented in a standard 0.25μm CMOS process showing 92.8% maximum efficiency and wide CR. © 2018 IEEE.

Lead telluride is an important thermoelectric material due to its large Seebeck coefficient combined with its unusually low thermal conductivity that is related to the strong anharmonicity of phonons in this material. Here, we have studied the resonant and nonperturbative coupling of transverse optical phonons in lead telluride with cavity photons inside small-mode-volume metallic metasurface cavities that have photonic modes with terahertz frequencies. We observed a giant vacuum Rabi splitting on the order of the bare phonon and cavity frequencies. Through terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experiments, we systematically studied the vacuum Rabi splitting as a function of sample thickness, temperature, and cavity length. Under the strongest light–matter coupling conditions, the strength of coupling exceeded the bare phonon and cavity frequencies, putting the system into the deep-strong coupling regime. These results demonstrate that this uniquely tunable platform is promising for realizing and understanding predicted cavity-vacuum-induced ferroelectric instabilities and exploring applications of light–matter coupling in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum technology. Detection of the aircraft from the remote sensing images attracts many attentions. Not only the aircraft taking off and landing but also the aircraft landing in the airport need to be monitored. This paper proposes a saliency-based CNN (convolutional neural network) method for aircraft detection in the remote sensing images. Many researches of aircraft detection access to a method of R-CNN (region convolutional neural network), which generates two thousand or more of proposal regions as candidates of the aircraft. The researches of using a saliency map to extract the objects from the images are still not so many. We adapt a series of preprocessing as transforming to a gray scale image, deleting the noise, binarizing by threshold, the closing operation, and floodfill to generate a saliency map where the contours of all objects are reinforced. Compared to R-CNN, the using of a saliency map greatly reduces the number of proposal regions, thus improving the efficiency. After this, we find the contours of objects and the minimum rectangles enclosing objects to extract proposed regions. Then, we prepare a negative dataset consisting of different types of backgrounds including the land, grass land and concrete. And for a positive dataset, we prepare images of aircraft in different angles and different sizes. To add more variation data into the dataset, we also use methods of augmentation like elastic distortion and perspective transforms. Then, we train a CNN model using the prepared dataset, which can tell whether a proposed region contains aircraft, after training. At last, we use a method named recall to evaluate the performance of the scheme, attaining an average recall of 0.7217, which shows the rate of aircraft successfully detected in all aircraft.

Organ segmentation is one of the most fundamental and challenging task in computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, and segmenting liver from 3D medical data becomes one of the hot research topics in medical analysis field. Graph cut algorithms have been successfully applied to medical image segmentation of different organs for 3D volume data which not only leads to very large-scale graph due to the same node number as voxel number. Slice by Slice liver segmentation method is one of the technique that normally used to solve the memory usage. However, the computation times are increased and reduce the accuracy. In this paper we propose an interactive organ segmentation using fully convolutional networks. The network will perform slice by slice which only 1 slice of seed points in each volume. To validate effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method, we conduct experiments on 20 CT volumes, focus on liver organ and most of which have tumors inside of the liver, and abnormal deformed shape of liver. Our method can segment with 0.95401 dice accuracy with better than stage-of-the-art methods. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2019.

Digital picture books increase the interest of children in reading and are often used to encourage children to read. In this study, we develop a digital picture book using the augmented reality (AR) technology, which can be referred to as an AR pop-up picture book (AR book). The AR technology is used to prepare and present digital picture books in the AR space. However, developing an AR book requires technical skills and expertise, which are not possessed by common picture book writers. Therefore, we propose a new intuitive method for obtaining editing effects by teaching motions based on the demonstrations of writers using real-world objects. The results of this study denote that the proposed method is useful for achieving editing effects in AR books, enables writers to achieve editing effects in an AR book, and improves the edit accuracy.

Global warming due to excessive emission greenhouse gases is a significant issue faced by humanity, and collectively, cars and trucks contribute about 20% to the entire global-warming gases. For a reason, recently, many attempts have been endured to reduce the emission and to increase fuel efficiency, including vehicle platooning, better driving strategy, and increasing engine efficiency. This study intends to provide a more detail assessment regarding the effects of the driving strategy to fuel consumption. For the purpose, the vehicle dynamics are quantified by employing the car-following model based on the optimal velocity model. The fuel consumption is estimated from the regression model of Ahn 18 . The result suggests that the braking distance strongly affects fuel consumption.

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory that is expected to reach one order of magnitude better sensitivity than that of current telescope arrays. The Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) have an essential role in extending the energy range down to 20 GeV. The prototype LST (LST-1) proposed for CTA was built in La Palma, the northern site of CTA, in 2018. LST-1 is currently in its commissioning phase and moving towards scientific observations. The LST-1 camera consists of 1855 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) which are sensitive to Cherenkov light. PMT signals are recorded as waveforms sampled at 1 GHz rate with Domino Ring Sampler version 4 (DRS4) chips. Fast sampling is essential to achieve a low energy threshold by minimizing the integration of background light from the night sky. Absolute charge calibration can be performed by the so-called F-factor method, which allows calibration constants to be monitored even during observations. A calibration pipeline of the camera readout has been developed as part of the LST analysis chain. The pipeline performs DRS4 pedestal and timing corrections, as well as the extraction and calibration of charge and time of pulses for subsequent higher-level analysis. The performance of each calibration step is examined, and especially charge and time resolution of the camera readout are evaluated and compared to CTA requirements. We report on the current status of the calibration pipeline, including the performance of each step through to signal reconstruction, and the consistency with Monte Carlo simulations. © 2022 Sissa Medialab Srl.
