The Large-Sized Telescopes (LSTs) of Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) are designed for gamma-ray studies focusing on low energy threshold, high flux sensitivity, rapid telescope repositioning speed and a large field of view. Once the CTA array is complete, the LSTs will be dominating the CTA performance between 20 GeV and 150 GeV. During most of the CTA Observatory construction phase, however, the LSTs will be dominating the array performance until several TeVs. In this presentation we will report on the status of the LST-1 telescope inaugurated in La Palma, Canary islands, Spain in 2018. We will show the progress of the telescope commissioning, compare the expectations with the achieved performance, and give a glance of the first physics results. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

SGP: A social network sampling method based on graph partition

A representative sample of a social network is essential for many internet services that rely on accurate analysis. A good sampling method for social network should be able to generate small sample network with similar structures and distributions as its original network. In this paper, a sampling algorithm based on graph partition, sampling based on graph partition (SGP), is proposed to sample social networks. SGP firstly partitions the original network into several sub-networks, and then samples in each sub-network evenly. This procedure enables SGP to effectively maintain the topological similarity and community structure similarity between the sampled network and its original network. Finally, we evaluate SGP on several well-known datasets. The experimental results show that SGP method outperforms seven state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2019 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Microencapsulation enhances probiotic viability under adverse conditions. This study introduces cupuassu ( Theobroma grandiflorum ) flour, a novel plant-based by-product, as a wall material for spray-dried Pediococcus pentosaceus microcapsules. In addition, the study also aims to explore the application and impact of this innovative material on Petit Suisse cheese, presenting unique findings that contribute to the advancement of dairy science. Five formulations were developed using sodium alginate (1%) with varying levels of cupuassu flour (0, 1, 2 and 3%) and inulin (1%). The microcapsules were characterized for moisture, dispersibility, hygroscopicity, and particle size, as well as by FTIR spectroscopy, thermal behavior (TGA/DTG), and morphology by SEM. Selected microcapsules were incorporated into Petit Suisse cheese, and their effects on pH, viscosity, color, and probiotic viability were monitored during 28 days of refrigerated storage. Results showed encapsulation efficiencies between 73.2% and 82.2%, and viability above 6.4 log CFU/g after 75 days at -18 °C. Cupuassu flour improved the physicochemical stability and thermal resistance of the microcapsules. In the dairy matrix, microcapsules influenced texture and acidity while ensuring probiotic retention. This study highlights the potential of cupuassu flour as a functional and sustainable biopolymer, expanding the technological applications of probiotics in the dairy industry.

Background: Recently, immunometabolism has gathered attention of many immunologists. It has been widely recognized that metabolic reprogramming in each immune cell brings different effects on different cells and is important for regulating their functions. Along with the progress of statistical genetics, serum metabolites were shown to be under genetic regulations1). Metabolic changes are now considered not only to be mere phenotypes of cells but also to be key factors for controlling immune cell differentiation, proliferation and function through regulating gene expressions eventually. Although genome-wide association studies have brought deep insights into SLE pathogenesis, the precise pathway from genome to metabolome has been largely unknown, and vice versa. Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate metabolomic regulation in SLE in relation to gene expressions by integrating plasma metabolome data and transcriptome data. Methods: We collected plasma samples from patients with SLE (n=57) who met the 1997 American College of Rheumatology criteria for SLE. Gender- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs) (n=56) were recruited. Metabolic profiles focusing on 39 amino acids were analyzed with liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry. Transcriptome data of SLE patients were obtained from our RNA-sequencing data of each immune cell subset (total 19 subsets). Whole-genome sequencing was also performed. Results: Our previous experiment showed that about 160 peaks were detected from comprehensive LC-TOFMS and amino acids were useful for distinguishing SLE patients from HCs. Both partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and random forest, a machine learning algorithm, revealed the importance of histidine (His), one of the essential amino acids, to classify SLE patients from HCs, whose plasma level was lower in SLE patients. The COVID-19 pandemic has been severely impacting global society since December 2019. The related findings such as vaccine and drug development have been reported in biomedical literature - at a rate of about 10,000 articles on COVID-19 per month. Such rapid growth significantly challenges manual curation and interpretation. For instance, LitCovid is a literature database of COVID-19-related articles in PubMed, which has accumulated more than 200,000 articles with millions of accesses each month by users worldwide. One primary curation task is to assign up to eight topics (e.g., Diagnosis and Treatment) to the articles in LitCovid. The annotated topics have been widely used for navigating the COVID literature, rapidly locating articles of interest, and other downstream studies. However, annotating the topics has been the bottleneck of manual curation. Despite the continuing advances in biomedical text mining methods, few have been dedicated to topic annotations in COVID-19 literature. To close the gap, we organized the BioCreative LitCovid track to call for a community effort to tackle automated topic annotation for COVID-19 literature. The BioCreative LitCovid dataset - consisting of over 30,000 articles with manually reviewed topics - was created for training and testing. It is one of the largest multi-label classification datasets in biomedical scientific literature. Nineteen teams worldwide participated and made 80 submissions in total. Most teams used hybrid systems based on transformers. The highest performing submissions achieved 0.8875, 0.9181, and 0.9394 for macro F1-score, micro F1-score, and instance-based F1-score, respectively. Notably, these scores are substantially higher (e.g., 12%, higher for macro F1-score) than the corresponding scores of the state-of-art multi-label classification method. Accurate physical parameters of exoplanet systems are essential for further exploration of planetary internal structure, atmospheres, and formation history. We aim to use simultaneous multicolour transit photometry to improve the estimation of transit parameters, to search for transit timing variations (TTVs), and to establish which of our targets should be prioritised for follow-up transmission spectroscopy. We performed time series photometric observations of 12 transits for the hot Jupiters HAT-P-19b, HAT-P-51b, HAT-P-55b, and HAT-P-65b using the simultaneous four-colour camera MuSCAT2 on the Telescopio Carlos Sánchez. We collected 56 additional transit light curves from TESS photometry. To derive transit parameters, we modelled the MuSCAT2 light curves with Gaussian processes to account for correlated noise. To derive physical parameters, we performed EXOFASTv2 global fits to the available transit and radial velocity data sets, together with the Gaia DR3 parallax, isochrones, and spectral energy distributions. To assess the potential for atmospheric characterisation, we compared the multicolour transit depths with a flat line and a clear atmosphere model. We consistently refined the transit and physical parameters. We improved the orbital period and ephemeris estimates, and found no evidence for TTVs or orbital decay. The MuSCAT2 broadband transmission spectra of HAT-P-19b and HAT-P-65b are consistent with previously published low-resolution transmission spectra. We also found that, except for HAT-P-65b, the assumption of a planetary atmosphere can improve the fit to the MuSCAT2 data. Background: Injection drug use (IDU) is a dangerous health behavior that increases mortality and morbidity. Identifying IDU early and initiating harm reduction interventions can benefit individuals at risk. However, extracting IDU behaviors from patients’ electronic health records (EHR) is difficult because there is no International Classification of Disease (ICD) code and the only place IDU information can be indicated is unstructured free-text clinical notes. Although natural language processing can efficiently extract this information from unstructured data, there are no validated tools. Methods: To address this gap in clinical information, we design and demonstrate a question-answering (QA) framework to extract information on IDU from clinical notes. Our framework involves two main steps: (1) generating a gold-standard QA dataset and (2) developing and testing the QA model. We utilize 2323 clinical notes of 1145 patients sourced from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse to construct the gold-standard dataset for developing and evaluating the QA model. We also demonstrate the QA model’s ability to extract IDU-related information on temporally out-of-distribution data. Results: Here we show that for a strict match between gold-standard and predicted answers, the QA model achieves 51.65% F1 score. For a relaxed match between the gold-standard and predicted answers, the QA model obtains 78.03% F1 score, along with 85.38% Precision and 79.02% Recall scores. Moreover, the QA model demonstrates consistent performance when subjected to temporally out-of-distribution data. Conclusions: Our study introduces a QA framework designed to extract IDU information from clinical notes, aiming to enhance the accurate and efficient detection of people who inject drugs, extract relevant information, and ultimately facilitate informed patient care. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

In the real situations of supply chain, there are different parts such as facilities, logistics warehouses and retail stores and they handle common kinds of products. In this research, these situations are focused on as the background of this research. They deal with the common quantities of their products, but due to their different environments, the optimal production quantity of one part can be unacceptable to another part and it may suffer a heavy loss. To avoid that kind of unacceptable situations, the common production quantities should be acceptable to all parts in one supply chain. Therefore, the motivation of this research is the necessity of the method to find the production quantities that make all decision makers acceptable is needed. However, it is difficult to find the production quantities that make all decision makers acceptable. Moreover, their acceptable ranges do not always have common ranges. In the decision making of car design, there are similar situations to this type of decision making. The performance of a car consists of purposes such as fuel efficiency, size and so on. Improving one purpose makes another worse and the relationship between these purposes is tradeoff. In these cases, Suriawase process is applied. This process consists of negotiations and reviews of the requirements of the purposes. In the step of negotiations, the requirements of the purposes are share among all decision makers and the solution that makes them as satisfied as possible. In the step of reviews of the requirements, they are reviewed based on the result of the negotiation if the result is unacceptable to some of decision makers. Therefore, through the iterations of the two steps, the solution that makes all decision makers satisfied is obtained. Influence of Dentin Priming with Tannin-Rich Plant Extracts on the Longevity of Bonded Composite Restorations

Objective. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of bioactive plant extracts as dentin biomodifying agents to improve the longevity of bonded restorations. For that, plant extracts were applied to the dentin surface prior to the adhesive system. Materials and Methods. Bovine incisors were ground flat to obtain 2 mm thick slices in which conical preparations were made (N = 10). Tannin-containing plant extracts were applied to dentin before the application of the restorative system, as follows: control group (untreated, CTL), chlorhexidine 0.12% (CHX), mastruz (Dysphania ambrosioides, MTZ), cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa, CTC), guarana (Paullinia cupana, GUA), galla chinensis (Rhus chinensis, GCH), and tannic acid (extracted from Acacia decurrens, TNA). The push-out bond strength test was conducted (0.5 mm/min). Dentin biomodification was assessed by the modulus of elasticity and mass change in bovine tooth sections (0.5 × 1.7 × 7.0 mm). The dentin staining after extract treatments of dentin slices was compared. The dentin surface wettability was also evaluated by means of the contact angles of the adhesive system with the dentin surface and compared with the untreated control group. Data were subjected to ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results. The bond strength of the restoratives to dentin was not significantly improved by the plant extracts, irrespective of the evaluation time (p>0.05). Except for TNA, the elastic modulus of demineralized dentin significantly reduced after treatment with the plant extracts (p<0.05). The dentin staining correlated with the tannin content of the extracts. The contact angle was significantly reduced when treated with CTC, GCH, and TNA. Conclusions. The tannin-containing extracts had a questionable effect on the longevity of bonded restorations. The dentin modulus was negatively affected by the extract treatments.
