This paper investigates a new scenario of spectrum sharing between unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and terrestrial wireless communication, in which a cognitive/secondary UAV transmitter communicates with a ground secondary receiver (SR), in the presence of a number of primary terrestrial communication links that operate over the same frequency band. We exploit the UAV's mobility in three-dimensional (3D) space to improve its cognitive communication performance while controlling the co-channel interference at the primary receivers (PRs), such that the received interference power at each PR is below a prescribed threshold termed as interference temperature (IT). First, we consider the quasi-stationary UAV scenario, where the UAV is placed at a static location during each communication period of interest. In this case, we jointly optimize the UAV's 3D placement and power control to maximize the SR's achievable rate, subject to the UAV's altitude and transmit power constraints, as well as a set of IT constraints at the PRs to protect their communications. Second, we consider the mobile UAV scenario, in which the UAV is dispatched to fly from an initial location to a final location within a given task period. We propose an efficient algorithm to maximize the SR's average achievable rate over this period by jointly optimizing the UAV's 3D trajectory and power control, subject to the additional constraints on UAV's maximum flying speed and initial/final locations. Finally, numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed designs for different scenarios, as compared to various benchmark schemes. It is shown that in the quasi-stationary scenario the UAV should be placed at its minimum altitude while in the mobile scenario the UAV should adjust its altitude along with horizontal trajectory, so as to maximize the SR's achievable rate in both scenarios. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) decouples network functions from dedicated, proprietary hardware into software Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) that can run on standard, commodity servers. One challenge of NFV is to provide high-throughput and low-latency network services. In this paper, we propose eVNF - a hybrid architecture to build and accelerate VNFs with eXpress Data Path (XDP). XDP is a Linux kernel framework that enables high-performance and programmable network processing. However, the programmability of XDP is limited to ensure kernel safety, thus causing difficulties in applying XDP to NFV. eVNF solves this problem by taking a hybrid approach: leave the simple but critical tasks inside the kernel with XDP, and let complex tasks be processed outside XDP, e.g., in user-space. With the hybrid architecture, eVNF allows building fast and flexible VNFs. We used eVNF to build three prototype VNFs: Firewall (eFW), Deep Packet Inspection (eDPI), and Load Balancer (eLB). We evaluated these VNFs in two service function chains using OpenStack. Our experiments showed that eVNF can significantly improve service throughput as well as reduce latency and CPU usage.

In this paper, we focus on binary sequences obtained from piecewise logistic map over integers, and show the relation between the Lyapunov exponents of the maps and results of the NIST tests for the sequences. When the Lyapunov exponent is a negative value, we confirm that the branch diagram is sparse and the bit occurrence rate is also greatly biased. We also give a sample of that the positive/negative signs of the Lyapunov exponents mostly coincide on the evaluations of the NIST tests. From the branching diagram of the piecewise logistic map, we can moreover find that there are many good pseudorandom sequences generated by the individual control parameters of the map.

With the spread of mobile devices, image and video transmission is in great demand. The use of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, where multiple data can be sent to multiple users, is highly expected. This paper proposes a novel power allocation scheme for MU-MIMO systems, which minimizes the variance of channel capacities of each spatial stream of all users to achieve user fairness in terms of video quality. In addition to the user fairness, we make the spatial streams which convey visually more important information be high-quality for achieving high video quality. Simulation results show that the proposed power allocation enables to equalize video quality even if the distances between a transmitter and users are different.

JASMINE is a Japanese planned space mission that aims to reveal the formation history of our Galaxy and discover habitable exoEarths. For these objectives, the JASMINE satellite performs high-precision astrometric observations of the Galactic bulge and high-precision transit monitoring of M-dwarfs in the near-infrared (1.0—1.6 µm in wavelength). For feasibility studies, we develop an image simulation software named JASMINE-imagesim, which produces realistic observation images. This software takes into account various factors such as the optical point spread function (PSF), telescope jitter caused by the satellite’s attitude control error (ACE), detector flat patterns, exposure timing differences between detector pixels, and various noise factors. As an example, we report a simulation for the feasibility study of astrometric observations using JASMINE-imagesim. The simulation confirms that the required position measurement accuracy of 4 milliarcseconds for a single exposure of 12.5-mag objects is achievable if the telescope pointing jitter uniformly dilutes the PSF across all stars in the field of view. On the other hand, the simulation also demonstrates that the combination of realistic pointing jitter and exposure timing differences in the detector can significantly degrade accuracy and prevent achieving the requirement. This means that certain countermeasures against this issue must be developed. This result implies that this kind of simulation is important for mission planning and advanced developments to realize more realistic simulations help us to identify critical issues and also devise effective solutions. © 2024, CC BY.

Recently, video distribution over wireless networks has become more common due to the spread of smart devices. This paper proposes an optimal power allocation algorithm for the transmission of layered video streams over point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems combined with superposition coding. The proposed power allocation scheme is derived from the maximization of the weighted sum-rate, where two-step optimization leads to a closed-form solution. First, the power distribution between eigen-channels is optimized, and then the optimal power allocation to quality layers is obtained. Results demonstrate that the proposed scheme attains higher peak signalto-noise ratio on average in a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio than conventional fixed power allocation schemes.

Using the Subaru/FOCAS IFU capability, we examine the spatially resolved relationships between gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass, and star-formation rate surface densities (Σ★ and ΣSFR, respectively) in extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) in the local universe. Our analysis includes 24 EMPGs, comprising 9,177 spaxels, which span a unique parameter space of local metallicity (12 + log(O/H) 6.9 to 7.9) and stellar mass surface density (Σ★ ∼ 105 to 107 Mo kpc−2), extending beyond the range of existing large integral-field spectroscopic surveys. Through spatially resolved emission line diagnostics based on the [N ii] BPT-diagram, we verify the absence of evolved active galactic nuclei in these EMPGs. Our findings reveal that, while the resolved mass-metallicity relation exhibits significant scatter in the low-mass regime, this scatter is closely correlated with local star-formation surface density. Specifically, metallicity decreases as ΣSFR increases for a given Σ★. Notably, half of the EMPGs show a distinct metal-poor horizontal branch on the resolved mass-metallicity relation. This feature typically appears at the peak clump with the highest Σ★ and ΣSFR and is surrounded by a relatively metal-enriched ambient region. These findings support a scenario in which metal-poor gas infall fuels episodic star formation in EMPGs, consistent with the kinematic properties observed in these systems. In addition, we identify four EMPGs with exceptionally low central metallicities (12 + log(O/H) 7.2), which display only a metal-poor clump without a surrounding metal-rich region. This suggests that such ultra-low metallicity EMPGs, at less than a few percent of the solar metallicity, may serve as valuable analogs for galaxies in the early stages of galaxy evolution. Brazil is the third largest beer producer in the world and has several brewing industries. These industries cover a range of production processes due to their wide variety of beverages, which leads to the generation of effluents with different physicochemical characteristics. Furthermore, these residues are usually disposed of without any treatment despite having enormous potential for biogas and bioenergy production. Biorefinery is a relevant alternative to the transition from a linear economy to a Circular Economy (CE). The Biorefinery exploits all available resources in the production of goods and contributes to sustainable development in the face of industrial production. In this context, as an alternative solution, anaerobic digestion (AD) has been commonly used as it uses different biomass sources to satisfy current energy demands. AD can be implemented to treat brewing effluent, promote its energy recovery, reduce environmental pollution, and produce environmentally friendly biological products: biogas and biofertilizer. Thus, this review explored the potential of AD for brewery waste management in association with the bio-based CE. Overall, the current manuscript emphasized the potential of brewery waste for biogas generation and energy production, discussing its adoption and challenges. © 2023
