Optimizing robot path planning within computational intelligence and robotics is increasingly important, and graph-based models are at the forefront of this advancement. Teaching these complex subjects poses challenges, addressed in this study through a novel pedagogical approach that combines sparrow-dissection and scaffolding with active, project-based learning (SDS-AL). This method, implemented in a graduate Computational Intelligence course, centers on teaching a visibility graph-based model for robot path planning. Students are provided with source code, which they dissect, understand, and adapt for their specific projects. The course structure encourages students to progress from guided learning to independent project completion, enhancing their practical and theoretical understanding of graph-based techniques. The efficacy of this teaching method is assessed through milestone assignments, presentations, and student feedback, focusing on their comprehension and application of the concepts. Feedback is also gathered on their development and use of neural network models, based on the revision of the initial source code. The teaching strategies are aligned with the course's learning outcomes, confirmed by analyzing the students' projects on graph-based robot path planning. The effectiveness of the course is further evaluated by integrating this analysis with data from the course evaluation system, underscoring the successful application of the graph-based method and the high quality of learning achieved. This integrated approach, merging sparrow-dissection and scaffolding pedagogies with active, project-based involvement, significantly improves student comprehension and application skills in the domain of robot path planning optimization. © American Society for engineering Education, 2024.

Augmented Reality (AR) Supporting Citizen Engagement in Circular Economy

Improving the public’s awareness of and engagement with sustainable practices is essential for transitioning from a linear to a circular economy (CE). This task is not trivial;however, research into new ways of effectively supporting awareness and engagement, especially in view of digitalization trends, is still missing. In this study, we investigate the ability of augmented reality (AR) technology to improve awareness of CE practices and to engage citizens, inclusively, in the CE approach. Specifically, we report on the development of a novel AR engagement tool and present the results of two studies undertaken using this tool to assess the reliability and validity of this engagement practice. The first study focuses on the citizens of a municipality in Greece, and the second focuses on the general public outside the municipality boundaries. Attributes related to user engagement, such as novelty, aesthetics, perceived usability, endurability, focused attention, self-efficacy, perceived learning, and interest in the topic, were assessed, as were factors affecting these attributes related to the participants’ knowledge of CE principles and exposure to similar technologies. The two studies indicate that the AR engagement tool increased social inclusion and community cohesion and was able to successfully bring CE principles and benefits to the public’s attention. Higher engagement levels were observed in participants who had limited exposure to the concept of CE prior to using the AR tool, and its use was found to improve their confidence and interest in CE. This study aspires to contribute to the ongoing discourse on the use of mobile AR and to support further evidence-based development of digital tools for public awareness and engagement. © 2022, The Author(s).

Agriculture plays a major role in eradicating poverty, promoting prosperity, and nourishing a projected 10 billion people by 2050 globally. In a changing climate, achieving optimal agricultural yields requires a deeper understanding of available natural resources and crops. This is especially important for places like the Navajo Nation, which faces significant challenges in food supply chain management due to various factors such as water demand, water quality, and insufficient information about land fertility and crops timings/seasons. Additionally, it is the largest Native American reservation in the U.S. It covers 27,425 square miles across Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico and has a population of 165,158 people, according to the 2020 census. Agriculture has been a key part of life in the Navajo Nation since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, playing a big role in the region’s development and stability. However, the lack of knowledge about decisions and actions during the crop growing season has resulted in lower crop productivity, as evidenced by the USDA statistical report for the Navajo Nation in 2012 and 2017. To support farmers by providing better decision-making and actionable insights, high-resolution, open-source Sentinel-2 satellite images are being used to develop advanced crop mapping techniques for identifying the spatial extent of various agricultural crops in the Navajo Nation. To address this, a collection of research papers was reviewed, leading to the development of a new methodology for analysing Sentinel-2 data from the 2017 and 2023 growing seasons within the Navajo Nation. The collected data was pre-processed by creating monthly median composites of surface reflectance to remove noise and enhance the results more accurately. Track segments welded together form a continuous welded rail (CWR). Although CWRs are widely used, they are prone to buckling in warm seasons. To prevent rail buckles, accurate estimates of the axial stress and rail neutral temperature (i.e., the temperature at which the axial stress is zero) are needed. This study proposes a noninvasive method to determine the axial load in CWRs using numeric models and field test data. A general finite element model under varying boundary conditions and axial stresses was formulated. The model was then validated experimentally by testing a real track in the field. During the experiment, the rail was subjected to the impact of an instrumented hammer, and the triggered vibrations were recorded with conventional accelerometers. These vibration frequencies were compared with numerical predictions to estimate the neutral temperature of the rail using a machine learning algorithm. The estimates showed good agreement with the measurements conducted by a third independent party that used a very cumbersome approach based on strain gages. © 2024, The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.

Multiple autonomous vehicles (MAVs) enhance efficiency and task execution compared to a single vehicle. Real-world applications necessitate MAVs to safely navigate in dynamic formation along planned trajectories, while sensing, mapping, and avoiding obstacles. Addressing the need for trajectory adaptation amidst real-world scenarios, a safety-aware bio-inspired framework is proposed in this article. Our approach employs a chaotic gravitational search algorithm (CGSA) for global trajectory generation in a predefined formation. A quadtree-driven variable resolution (QVR) algorithm using monocular cameras provides occupancy grid maps (OGMs) at different resolutions. A formation control with target tracking minimizes a potential function for MAVs to follow the CGSA trajectory. Additionally, a bio-inspired neural network (BNN) local navigator coupled with dynamic moving windows (DMW) advances obstacle avoidance and refines safe trajectories using QVR and OGMs. Simulation and comparative studies validate the framework's robustness and effectiveness for MAVs. © 2020 IEEE.

Virtual reality (VR) technology is quickly becoming more accessible to the general public due to the availability and capabilities of modern smartphone devices. However, such mobile devices are not as powerful as high-end desktop systems where VR is mostly established. Running demanding VR apps leads to performance issues such as lag, excessive heat, and fast battery drainage. To avoid these problems, software factors must be optimised. The user evaluation (N = 51) involved presenting multiple VR scenes (with varying frame rates), requiring participants to judge which scenes felt smooth;the results indicate that anything below 50 FPS was tolerable at best and nauseating at worst. To also measure the performance impact of various software settings, benchmarks were conducted on different smartphones. The results highlight the effects when varying the number of displayed on-screen objects, as well as outlining which settings should be avoid when specifically targeting mobile VR platforms. Heat and battery life were found to be non-issues at recommended performance levels. The proposed work established valuable guidelines which can be helpful for real time applications in development time reduction and complexity simplification from graphical and refresh rate optimization perspectives. © 2022 River Publishers. This paper presents a comparison of hybrid excited axial flux switching machines (HEAFSM) with conventional winding and Phase Group Concentrated Coil (PGCC) winding. This study investigates the potential of increasing the output torque using Phase Group Concentrated Coil (PGCC) windings in a hybrid excited axial flux switching machine (HEAFSM). HEAFSM consists of ferrite magnets and field windings, allowing for adjustable excitation. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed machine, a comparative analysis between the conventional model and the PGCC windings model is performed using three-dimensional Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The FEA simulations provide valuable insights into the machine's performance, particularly in load torque capabilities. The analysis results indicate a significant increase in the average output torque of the HEAFSM with the inclusion of PGCC windings. Overall, this research highlights the potential benefits of incorporating PGCC windings in the design of axial flux switching machines. The findings suggest that the hybrid excited axial flux switching machine with PGCC windings can increase torque production and enhance the machine's overall performance. © 2024 IEEE

As China's social economy progresses, the amount of equipment in distribution networks continues to grow, leading to increasingly complex system operations. In this environment, traditional centralized control methods consume excessive computing resources and fail to achieve the processing speeds required by modern intelligent distribution networks. To address these challenges, this article introduces the concept of electrical distance to segment the distribution network and proposes voltage regulation algorithms based on the alternating direction multiplier method and dual ascent method for efficient distributed voltage regulation. © 2024 IEEE.

In the computer Architecture curriculum, teaching the complex topics of single cycle and pipelined datapath to senior students is challenging, which this paper addresses through a hybrid pedagogy combining Technological Pedagogical Knowledge with flipped learning (TPK-FL) and multiple practice exercises. TPK explores the technology-pedagogy interaction, particularly in datapath design. This approach enables students to construct knowledge by integrating technological tools with pedagogical strategies. Flipped learning (FL) reverses traditional teaching methods by providing course materials on datapath design beforehand, fostering active, self-directed learning in the classroom. The pedagogy is enriched with structured practice exercises, enhancing students' understanding of datapath design, along with their problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills. The effectiveness of this method is validated through various assessments, including homework, exams, Q&A sessions, and student feedback, with a positive comparison to the instructor's previous teaching experiences. This holistic evaluation confirms the efficacy of this innovative approach in improving the learning experience in computer Architecture and engineering education, specifically in the areas of single cycle and pipelined datapath design. The approach improves student performance, enhancing learning outcomes in computer Architecture and engineering curriculum. © American Society for engineering Education, 2024.
