Wheat field fires pose a significant threat to wildlife habitats, agricultural resources, and especially farmer incomes. The frequency of these fires has increased noticeably in recent years, likely due to human activity in agricultural areas and the exacerbating effects of climate change. Rapid action is crucial once smoke is detected, as it marks the first step in early fire detection. To address this challenge, we propose an enhanced CNN model specifically designed to identify smoke in wheat field fires. As part of this approach, a dataset of 3900 UAV images was compiled to depict smoke from wheat field fires. The proposed work also integrates the CBAM into the CNN to improve the model's ability to extract features for smoke patch characteristics of wheat field fires. Furthermore, the CNN architecture includes decoupled heads to extract relevant data from various sources. Testing on our wheat field fire smoke dataset has demonstrated the effectiveness of this proposed method, achieving an accuracy of up to 0.91 and outperforming the previous model. © 2024 IEEE.

In this work, we consider enhancing a target speech from a singlechannel noisy observation corrupted by non-stationary noises at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We take a classification-based approach, where the objective is to estimate an Ideal Binary Mask (IBM) that classifies each time-frequency (T-F) unit of the noisy observation into one of the two categories: speech-dominant unit or noise-dominant unit. The estimated mask is used to binary weight the noisy mixture to obtain the enhanced speech. In the proposed system, the sparse non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is used to extract features from the noisy observation, followed by a Deep Neural Network (DNN) for classification. Compared with several existing classification-based systems, the proposed system uses minimal speech-specific domain knowledge, but is able to achieve better performance in certain low SNR regions. Moreover, the proposed system outperforms the traditional statistical method, especially in terms of improving the intelligibility. © 2015 IEEE.

Aerosol jet printed 3-D coplanar waveguides up to 50 GHz are demonstrated in this paper for the first time featuring a multilayer aerosol jet deposition process. The aerosol jet printing utilized in this paper is the first aerosol jet process to demonstrate multilayer deposition with bi-materials and is host substrate independent. The paper provides an insight into the fabrication process, the technology assessment and the characterization of the polyimide as well as the nano silver particles. The printed polyimide could achieve a thickness of 60 μm. The three-dimensional printed transmission lines demonstrated losses of 0.5 dB/mm at 50 GHz. © 2014 European Microwave Association.

We revisit the stochastic limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (L-BFGS) algorithm. By proposing a new coordinate transformation framework for the convergence analysis, we prove improved convergence rates and computational complexities of the stochastic L-BFGS algorithms compared to previous works. In addition, we propose several practical acceleration strategies to speed up the empirical performance of such algorithms. We also provide theoretical analyses for most of the strategies. Experiments on large-scale logistic and ridge regression problems demonstrate that our proposed strategies yield significant improvements vis-à-vis competing state-of-the-art algorithms. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

We consider the problem of multicasting multiple description (MD) video in wireless ad hoc networks. We follow an application-centric, cross-layer approach with the objective of minimizing video distortion. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we propose a practical MD video multicast scheme that uses multiple trees to achieve an improved error resilience performance. The proposed scheme also takes into account highly diverse wireless link bandwidihs by using scalable coding for each description, thus further improving the overall video quality. Second, we formulate the optimized multicast routing as a combinatorial optimization problem and propose an efficient Genetic Algorithm (GA)-based metaheuristic solution procedure. Performance comparison with existing approaches show significant gains for a wide range of network operating conditions. © 2004 IEEE.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a 3D printing process widely used in industries such as automotive, healthcare, aerospace, and consumer goods. It creates different 3D objects by adding different layers over one another. AM manufacturing processes are capable enough to produce complex parts, consisting of intricate designs and geometries, characterized by well-established grain structure and properties without expensive tooling in reduced lead time and at low cost. It is a multi-physical process, including various parameters that impact the final product's quality. Moreover, Machine Learning (ML) techniques are suitable approaches aimed at understanding and predicting the complex processes of AM. In this study, an overview of AM and the challenges in the AM is presented, as well as the ML approaches to address the challenges in AM processes are also discussed. The recently introduced ML techniques in AM processes are evaluated explicitly. To be more precise, limited training data, material choice, and standardization regarding data pose major challenges that need to be addressed when applying ML techniques to AM methods. © 2023 IEEE.

A Dual Accelerated Method for Online Stochastic Distributed Averaging: From Consensus to Decentralized Policy Evaluation

Motivated by decentralized sensing and policy evaluation problems, we consider a particular type of distributed stochastic optimization problem over a network, called the online stochastic distributed averaging problem. We design a dual-based method for this distributed consensus problem with Polyak–Ruppert averaging and analyze its behavior. We show that the proposed algorithm attains an accelerated deterministic error depending optimally on the condition number of the network, and also that it has an order-optimal stochastic error. This improves on the guarantees of state-of-the-art distributed stochastic optimization algorithms when specialized to this setting, and yields—among other things—corollaries for decentralized policy evaluation. Our proofs rely on explicitly studying the evolution of several relevant linear systems, and may be of independent interest. Numerical experiments are provided, which validate our theoretical results and demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing methods in finite-sample scenarios on several natural network topologies. © 2022, CC BY.

Extending network lifetime is a primary design objective for a wireless sensor network (WSN). Efficient clustering among sensor nodes seems a promising solution to evenly balance energy consumption and thus extend node and network lifetime. One of the most dominant clustering algorithms for energy efficient cluster formation is LEACH, because it balances node energy consumption. However, stochastic cluster head election of LEACH poses problems. In this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm, named Minimum Weighted Clustering Algorithm (MWCLA) and compare its effectiveness with LEACH. MWCLA functions as follows: 1) Selects cluster heads based on cost criterion and quantifies the suitability of candidate cluster head by applying weights and 2) Rotates cluster head roles among nodes in a deterministic way, based on residual energy levels. In our simulations, we compare MWCLA with LEACH in terms of network lifetime and we highlight the cases where MW-CLA is better in balancing node energy consumption, improving the efficiency in energy dissipation for communication and prolonging network lifetime. Our comparisons are based on three metrics: FND (First Node Dies), HND (Half Node Dies) and LND (Last Node Dies). MWCLA succeeds a network lifetime extension of 20% - 30% as compared to LEACH. © 2015 ACM.

In collaborative tasks where humans work alongside machines, the robot's movements and behaviour can have a significant impact on the operator's safety, health, and comfort. To address this issue, we present a multi-stereo camera system that continuously monitors the operator's posture while they work with the robot. This system uses a novel distributed fusion approach to assess the operator's posture in real-time and to help avoid uncomfortable or unsafe positions. The system adjusts the robot's movements and informs the operator of any incorrect or potentially harmful postures, reducing the risk of accidents, strain, and musculoskeletal disorders. The analysis is personalized, taking into account the unique anthropometric characteristics of each operator, to ensure optimal ergonomics. The results of our experiments show that the proposed approach leads to improved human body postures and offers a promising solution for enhancing the ergonomics of operators in collaborative tasks. © 2023 IEEE.
