Advanced forecasting, future energy storage, dynamic pricing, load management, and responding to the demands of the energy market are some of the characteristics of a smart grid. A reliable, service-oriented, secure, efficient, and cost-effective modern smart grid system is always desired. One way to achieve these objectives is to implement a blockchain approach, with the emphasis of smart grid data flow monitoring and data center management. Such approach provides a suitable environment with tools to manage and access data effectively. The objective of this paper is to introduce the power blockchain model: an energy system model based on enabling accessible service to computing resources, real-time data stream processing, and an environment to integrate data sharing. Utilizing digital technology, a proper implementation of this model will provide the means to manage cost and consumption of energy, and improve the reliability of smart grids for energy providers and consumers. Furthermore, it will balance the energy demand with the energy supply at grid levels. In this paper, we propose a decentralized modelling architecture for the blockchain technology to address the better coordination and energy trading among energy providers and customers in an efficient and integrated manner. The results show that our proposed blockchain model would be applicable for making balance between energy demand and supply at smart grid level. © 2019 IISE Annual Conference and Expo 2019. The Controlled Randomness Protocol (CRP) for management of cryptographic keys is a method to improve the security level of secure communication protocols. We assess the performance of the CRP when implemented on embedded systems running the. NET Compact Framework. We present our findings from two different platforms: one smartphone running. NET Compact Framework 3.5 and one smartphone running. NET Compact Framework 4.0. Our assessment verifies that when implemented in the. NET Compact Framework, the controlled randomness protocol imposes a configurable and tolerable amount of overhead computation while it offers a significant security improvement compared to a conventional implementation of a key management protocol.

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) together with supporting information systems offer myriad possibilities for system wide improvements to data access, work flow and integrated information exchange. Parallel to these developments providers must implement supply chain based data standards to their operations in order to realize system interoperability and comprehensive data integration. Supply chain data standards are universal, unique and unambiguous identifiers for products and locations. Integrating supply chain standards in provider processes, clinical workflow, and ultimately in EHRs offers an ability to track products, serves as a basis for cost and clinical effectiveness, improves patient safety and quality outcomes. In this paper, we present the significance and benefits of adopting and transacting using supply chain data standards, improvement areas within provider operations, potential advantages of integrating supply chain standards with EHRs and barriers to healthcare provider implementation. © 2015 IEEE.

Software industry increasingly faces today the challenge of creating complex custom-made industrial Process Measurement and Control System (IPMCS) applications within time and budget, while high competition forces prices down. A lot of proprietary solutions address the engineering process, and evolving standards exploit the function block construct as the main building block for the development of IPMCSs. However existing approaches are procedural-like and they do not exploit the maximum benefits introduced by the object technology. In the context of this paper, new technologies in Software engineering that assist in improving the efficiency of software development process are considered. An Object-oriented framework is defined, to improve the engineering process of IPMCSs in terms of reliability, development time and degree of automation. This framework embodies an abstract design capable to provide solutions for the family of distributed IPMCSs. It will attempt to increase reusability in both architecture and functionality by addressing issues such as interoperability and integrated development of distributed IPMCSs.

Educational systems, especially in STEM disciplines, continue to be challenging in terms of effective design of pedagogies and environments to support teaching and learning. There is a need for more empirical investigations of the effectiveness of specific pedagogies. As part of a cognitive communications curriculum for engineering and computer science students, learning modules were developed through a partnership between Virginia Tech and Norfolk State University. A quasi-experimental design was used, including pre- and post-test measures of cognitive communications self-efficacy and performance on lab assignments. Results were mixed in terms of effectiveness. Criteria for engagement were fully met and selfefficacy increased significantly for one of the self-efficacy items. However, student performance based on lab assignments did not fully meet the criteria. Issues contributing to the lack of effectiveness are discussed as well as extended analyses of the data to further explore student performance. One-line diagrams are widely used to represent the electrical power system current state and its probable performance in the case of studies and simulations. Hence, its adequate construction is of great importance to avoid inaccurate decisions of the network operators. In order to reduce the human errors and the huge effort in a manual generation technique (usually adopted nowadays), this work proposes a methodology to automatically build these diagrams. The method is based on the usage of the geospatial data related to the network buses and branches with a graph algorithm that permits the elimination of superpositions of buses. The approach was successfully tested with the Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 30 buses standard system and with a portion of the Brazilian network.

The rapidly increasing popularity of micromobility devices, such as e-scooters and bicycles, in urban environments underscores the critical need for advanced trajectory prediction models to enhance road safety and facilitate seamless integration into intelligent transportation systems. This study introduces a novel approach to predicting the movements of bicyclists and e-scooter riders by leveraging a unique dataset that combines bird's-eye and egocentric views, collected from diverse urban settings across the United States. Employing state-of-the-art deep learning techniques, our model significantly outperforms traditional linear and polynomial regression models in terms of Average Displacement Error (ADE) and Final Displacement Error (FDE), demonstrating superior accuracy in forecasting the trajectories of vulnerable road users. Furthermore, our approach incorporates cognitive annotations to predict crossing intentions, enriching the model's predictive capabilities. The findings highlight the potential of our method to contribute to the development of proactive safety measures and collision avoidance systems, ultimately fostering safer urban mobility landscapes for all road users. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper provides an in-depth analysis and performance evaluation of four Solar Radiance (SR) prediction models. The prediction is ensured for a period ranging from a few hours to several days of the year. These models are derived from four machine learning methods, namely the Feed-forward Back Propagation (FFBP) method, Convolutional Feed-forward Back Propagation (CFBP) method, Support Vector Regression (SVR), and the hybrid deep learning (DL) method, which combines Convolutional Neural Networks and Long Short-Term Memory networks. This combination results in the CNN-LSTM model. Additionally, statistical indicators use Mean Squared Error (MSE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Normalized Root Mean Squared Error (nRMSE). Each indicator compares the predicted output by each model above and the actual output, pre-recorded in the experimental trial. The experimental results consistently show the power of the CNN-LSTM model compared to the remaining models in terms of accuracy and reliability. This is due to its lower error rate and higher detection coefficient (R² = 0.99925). © The Author(s) 2025.

In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed load shedding optimization for disaster recovery in smart grids. We develop distributed second-order interior-point based load shedding algorithms that enjoy a fast quadratic convergence rate. Our main contributions are two-fold: (i) We propose a rooted spanning tree based reformulation that enables our distributed algorithm design;(ii) Based on the spanning tree reformulation, we design distributed computation schemes for our proposed second-order interior-point based load shedding. Collectively, these results serve as an important first step in load shedding and disaster recovery that uses second-order distributed techniques.

Multiple Description (MD) coding has a great potential for multimedia communications in wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we study the important problem of joint routing and server selection for MD video in ad hoc networks. We take a cross-layer approach to formulate the task as a combinatorial optimization problem and present tight lower and upper bounds for the achievable distortion. The upper bound also provides a feasible solution to the formulated problem. Our extensive numerical results show that the bounds are very close to each other for all the cases studied, indicating the near-global optimality of the derived upper bounding solution. Moreover, we observe significant gains in video quality achieved by the proposed approach over existing server selection schemes. This justifies the importance of jointly considering routing and server selection for optimal MD video streaming in wireless ad hoc networks. The proposed algorithms are computationally efficient and can be easily incorporated into existing ad hoc routing protocols, making them highly suitable for supporting MD video streaming in wireless ad hoc networks. © 2005 IEEE.
