The "schooling industry" is faced with an inescapable demand to redefine its endeavors in terms of producing learning, rather than providing instructions. We propose a hybrid learning model to attract distance as well as traditional students. One of the major components of this model is the Web-based learning and interaction. We review the available avenues of distance learning and offer a model that we prepared as an example of Web-based distance learning and training. This model combines videoconferencing, interactive classroom, Web-based lectures and traditional instructions in an optimized way to achieve the goal of high quality technical education. The availability of lecture notes and other course material on the Web makes it a 24×7 hours classroom. Conducting classes via videoconferencing ensures student participation from all locations and optional interactive conventional teaching strengthens the student-teacher relationship and reinforces the concepts in the minds of students. Therefore, we believe this model offers one of the best opportunities in Web-based distance learning. This paper presents the hybrid learning model and discusses the opportunities and challenges of the Web technologies in the education of comput.r sci.nce and engineering. Through this hybrid model we have already successfully offered several courses in the comput.r sci.nce program at SUNY Fredonia with students registering from across the New York State. © 2000 IEEE.

The microscopic analysis of time dependent 3D live cells provides considerable challenges to visualization. Effective visualization can provide insight into the structure and functioning of living cells. The paper presents a case study in which a number of visualization techniques were applied to analyze a specific problem in cell biology: the condensation and de-condensation of chromosomes during cell division. The spatial complexity of the data required sophisticated presentation techniques. The interactive virtual reality enabled visualization system, proteus, specially equipped for time dependent 3D data sets is described. An important feature of proteus is that it is extendible to cope with application-specific demands.

BizViz (Business Visualization) is a rapidly growing phenomenon in the realm of visualization and information visualization. The main goal of BizViz is to support managers in their daily work of understanding forces within business processes and making decisions to control these forces. The case study presented in this paper illustrates the added value of visualization at a social security institution (Gak) in the Netherlands. The prototype built, integrates both databases and simulation as information sources. This way managers can study the past and present as well as experiment with possible future situations. The intended contribution of this paper is twofold. First, it presents how visualization can (successfully) be applied in practice. It illustrates the added value of BizViz in the social security domain. As a second contribution, the paper derives and discusses requirements that play an important role in visualization application development intended for decision-making support.

We define an ant algorithm for solving random binary constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). We empirically investigate the behavior of the algorithm on this type of problems and establish the parameter settings under which the ant algorithm performs best for a specific class of CSPs. The ant algorithm is compared to six other state-of-the-art stochastic algorithms from the field of evolutionary comput.ng. It turns out that the ant algorithm outperforms all other algorithms and that bivariate distribution algorithms perform worse than the univariate ones, the latter largely due to the fact that they cannot model the randomly generated instances.

This paper present results from a simulation study aimed at evaluating the comparative performance of two resource control mechanisms viz. weighted fair queueing (WFQ) and class based queueing (CBQ). The purpose of this work is to assess their relative suitability for supporting multiservice in future packet switched networks. The experiment described in this paper compares their respective response time delay characteristics when each is presented with identical traffic profiles.

Our motivation for this research is twofold. Firstly, we embed the watermark in wavelet domain rather than DCT domain motivated by the fact that the wavelet transform is used in jpeg2000 standardization process. Secondly, high bit rate watermarks tend to get destroyed, even before between 10% to 32% average lossless compression. Hence we intend to get the watermark detection quality decreasing as we increase the compression ratio to improve detection performance. We will do this by introducing the concept of multiresolution watermark channels. We will develop techniques to construct such watermark channels.

Software repositories have a key role to play in software reuse strategies to improve software development productivity. However, repositories have not been conspicuously successful, and have not been able to play their role very successfully, despite improvements in supporting technology, such as the World Wide Web. We speculate that a weakness in repositories is their usability. In this paper, we present a study of the usability of Web-based software repositories, using the "cognitive walkthrough" usability inspection method. We found that repository usability did indeed seem to be a difficulty, and identified several significant points where usability could be improved.

Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) has been applied to examination of several clinically and biologically important materials including the lens of the eye. Visual comparison of DLS particle size distribution data from distinct classes; such as normal and cataractous eyes is often adequate for clinical grouping. However a more objective, formal and rigorous classification scheme is needed for evaluation of more subtle effects as may occur in therapeutic or toxicological investigations. We review sources of variability in DLS methodology as a step toward a classification scheme.

We consider linear filtering system with non-Gaussian initial condition. Two explicit and simple filtering formulae are obtained: one for the conditional density function of the estimated state and another for the conditional mean. Only 2n sufficient statistics need to be comput.d in real time, where n is the dimension of the state vector. It is shown that our formulae constitute natural extensions of the Kalman-Bucy filter. We also give an explicit solution to the derived Kolmogorov equation.

The combination of Petri net (PN) and AI to solve flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) scheduling problems has been proven to be a promising approach. However, the NP-hard nature of the problem prevents the PN capability of reasoning about the behavior of a practical system. To overcome this drawback, we propose two techniques: a systematic method to avoid the generation of unpromising paths within the search graph, and a stage-search based algorithm. The algorithm developed is based on the application of the A* algorithm and the PN-based heuristics. The search is performed within a limited local search window where an optimization policy is applied to evaluate the most promising paths. For each state, the algorithm is able to decide whether an enabled operation is applied, and to maintain the decision until new system information makes the reconsideration meaningful. Comparison with previous work is presented to show the superiority of the proposed approach.
