Moving source 2D-hologram in the presence of intensive internal waves in SWARM-95 experiment

This paper presents the holographic signal processing results from an acoustical oceanography experiment on the New Jersey continental shelf called SWARM-95. This experiment that was conducted in summer of 1995 aimed at propagation of broadband acoustic signals in the presence of intensive internal waves (IIW). Impulsive acoustic signals were from a moving source. The IIW caused modes coupling and significant 3D acoustic effects (Badiey M. et al., JASA, 117(2): 613–625). The current research is based on holographic signal processing (Pereselkov S., Kuz’kin V., JASA, 151(2): 666- 676) utilizing holographic signal processing. Here, the sound intensity distributions in frequency-time coordinates, called the source interferogram, is analyzed using a 2D Fourier transform (2D-FT). The result of the 2D-FT is called the Fourier-hologram (hologram). Two distinct sets of spectral spots were identified in the hologram of the moving source. The first set corresponds to the sound field in an unperturbed waveguide (without IIW). The second set relates to the hydrodynamic perturbation of the sound field caused by IIW. Such a hologram structure allows for the reconstruction of the parameters of the moving source. Results of this research can be used for detection and localization of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV). Many new services have emerged to realize ubiquitous comput.ng environments, owing to the increasing supply of mobile devices and more widespread Internet and wireless network facilities. We introduce the U-Campus (ubiquitous comput.ng for campus) service. This study has been conducted through interdisci.linary research by four participating departments. The U-campus project is part of the UTOPIA project (Ubiquitous comput.ng TOwn Project: Intelligent context Awareness), which covers town- and city-wide environments. Currently, a test bed for U-campus has been constructed to support various services suck as U-profile, U-messaging and U-campus tour guide services. Students, professors, school staffs, and campus visitors can easily access the various available campus services by using image-based sensors and mobile devices such as CDMA cellular phones or WiFi smart phones. The major purpose of this research is to provide a context-aware U-campus environment to users by utilizing sensors and mobile devices currently available in the public sector and the marketplace.

Structure of interferogram and hologram of non-moving source in presence of shallow water internal waves

The results of holographic signal processing of the oceanographic experiment SWARM-95 on the coast of New Jersey are presented in the paper. The used acoustic signals were obtained on stationary acoustic track (non-moving airgun source) in the presence of shallow water intensive internal waves (IIW). The IIW led to significant 3D acoustic effects [Badiey et al., JASA 117(2), 613–625]. Within framework of holographic signal processing [Pereselkov and Kuz’kin, JASA 151(2), 666–676] the source interferogram (sound intensity distributions in frequency-time coordinates) is analyzed by two-dimensional Fourier transform (2D-FT). The result of the 2D-FT is called the Fourier hologram (source hologram). In result of holographic signal processing, the two separated sets of spectral spots are obtained in hologram domain. The first set of spectral spots corresponds to sound field in nonperturbed waveguide (without of IIW). The second set of spectral spots in hologram corresponds to hydrodynamic field perturbation by IIW. This structure of the hologram allows the reconstruction of interferogram of nonperturbed field for waveguide in the absence of IIW. The error in the reconstruction of the nonperturbed interferogram is estimated. [Work supported by grant from the Russian sci.nce Foundation 23-61-10024.]

Comparison of direct measurement methods for headset noise exposure in the workplace

Specialized equipment and techniques are required to carry out direct sound measurements under occluded ears for the purpose of assessing the noise exposure from communication headsets. Standard ISO 11904 describes two procedures: (1) the microphone in a real ear (MIRE) and (2) the acoustic manikin technique using an occluded ear simulator IEC 60318-4. Methods using simpler artificial ears, such as IEC 60318-1, have also been proposed in occupational noise measurement standards such as CAN/CSA Z107.56. Such devices are more practical to use and more easily accessible. However, they have not been designed specifically for noise measurements under communication headsets and there is little comparative data to the manikin technique, which is considered the gold standard for simulated in-situ acoustic measurements. Furthermore, little is known about measurement reliability for the purpose of standardization. Fit-refit measurements were obtained under laboratory conditions with four different types of artificial ears (type 1, type 2, type 3.3, manikin), three communication headset types (circum-aural, supra-aural, intra-aural) and six different communication signals. Data was transformed into equivalent-diffuse sound levels using third-octave procedures as well as single number corrections. Results illustrate that methods using single number corrections as well as fit-refit standard deviations vary according to measurement conditions.

System integration for a biomimetic dynamic sonar head

Horseshoe bats (Rhinolophidae) have dynamic biosonar systems with interfaces for ultrasonic emission/reception that deform while diffracting the outgoing/incoming sound waves. This peripheral dynamics has been shown to enhance sensory information encoding. To investigate the properties and potential uses of these system features in the real world, a biomimetic sonar head is being developed with the goal of mimicking as much of the bats' peripheral dynamics as faithfully as possible. Further constraints on this development were suitability for integration with mobile platforms and support for interactive quantitative/in-depth experimentation. Flexible noseleaf and pinna shapes along with an actuation system have been designed to mimic the static geometry of the respective structures in bats as well as several of the animals' degrees of freedom in deforming them. The electrical subsystem has been designed to support high-quality ultrasound generation and recording. Generation of all source voltages and signal amplification have been consolidated into a single circuit board to reduce weight and complexity of the overall system. The frame has been altered to reduce weight and add modularity to the noseleaf and pinna elements. The software architecture is based on a back-end (Python, LabVIEW) combined with a flexible front-end (MATLAB) for experimental design and data analysis.

Towards developing a generalized semi-coherent three-dimensional energy flux model

The energy flux method can be interpreted as an integration over propagation angle of a semi-classical (WKB) modal continuum, which yields an averaged incoherent intensity field with depth-dependent intensity bands that decay in range. Range dependence is typically incorporated via the adiabatic modes approximation and use of the ray invariant to map propagation angles. Though the energy flux method averages out nearly all of the field structure, it has the primary advantages of avoiding finding eigenvalues and eigenrays and its comput.tional effort does not directly scale with frequency or range. The method has also been extended in the past decade to include a convergence factor derived from the interference of neighboring modes, producing a semi-coherent solution that captures some convergence structure analogous to high-frequency caustics. Since the development of the semi-coherent energy flux method, it has so far only been applied to Nx2D environmental models, but should theoretically be applicable in a 3D environment without the assumption of azimuthal symmetry or the exclusion of horizontal refraction. This paper will discuss the theoretical derivation and numerical implementation of a generalized semi-coherent three-dimensional energy flux model. The energy flux method uses a continuum of adiabatic Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin modes to integrate intensity directly as a function of propagation angle. Work published a decade ago extended the energy flux method to include semi-coherent interference between neighboring modes to capture convergence zones. This study seeks to generalize the energy flux method to three-dimensional inhomogeneous underwater environments by converting a cross-product of double mode-sums to a double integration over solid angle. Theoretical derivations for a proof of concept model were presented previously, and current work has been focused on the numerical implementation of the model. Model validation will be discussed with comparisons to analytical solutions and other three-dimensional underwater acoustic propagation models.

Speech-like movements emerge from simulated peri-oral muscle activation space without neural control

Muscle synergies have been proposed as a solution to the degrees of freedom problem inherent in the biomechanics of speech production [Gick & Stavness, 2013, Front. Psych, 4, 977]. However, the majority of experiments involving the extraction of muscle synergies prove theoretically insufficient to determine whether such synergies are of neural origin or simply reflect the lower dimensionality of an under-sampled biomechanical/neural task space [Kutch & Valero-Cuevas, 2012, PLoS comput.tional biology, 8(5), e1002434]. Therefore, to what extent biomechanics of the human vocal tract may constrain the “ecological state space” of a speaker during locution remains uninvestigated. As a proof of concept, we created a simplified version of the peri-oral region using FEM modeling in a physics-based simulator (ArtiSynth [Lloyd et al., 2012, Soft tissue biomech…surgery, pp. 355]). Systematic simulations enabled us to model the full kinematic/biomechanical space. Visualization of the resulting biomechanical state space using t-SNE [van der Maaten & Hinton, 2008, ***., 9, 2579] illustrates that speech-like movements (e.g., lip rounding or spreading) emerge as self-organizing structures (muscle synergies) critically without a direct neural controller. These results are discussed in the context of current and future explorations of motor control of speech. [Funded by NSERC.]

Making classification decisions on the basis of multiple calls from the same class (e.g., species) can reduce the classification error that is attributable to variance. In many cases, clustering acoustic signals from multiple classes on the basis of location information can allow for separation and simultaneous classification of those calls. Source location and call timing are the most common criteria for clustering calls into groups or tracks. However, in many studies, widely spaced arrays or internal clock drift render a large proportion of the detected calls non-localizable. We built flexible clustering systems that incorporate all time difference of arrival values from calls detected by two or more sensors. We developed three clustering algorithms and used Monte Carlo simulations to compare their clustering accuracy and classification error. The algorithms increased clustering accuracy and reduced classification error by 2%–20% relative to grouping by time (a common fusion strategy) or classification of individual calls. These results demonstrate the ability of imperfect spatial information to improve classification accuracy of vocally active species.
