Microbial source tracking (MST) tools provide insights on fecal pollution levels in aquatic environments using quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays that target host-associated fecal marker genes. Existing wastewater-associated marker genes have shown limited or significant cross-reactions with non-human fecal samples. In this study, we mined the current Gut Phage Database (GPD) and designed a novel untreated wastewater-specific Bifidobacterium phage qPCR assay (i.e., Bifi assay). The sensitivity and specificity of the Bifi marker genes were assessed by analyzing untreated wastewater and non-human fecal samples in China and Australia. Bifi assay revealed 100% host-specificity against non-human fecal samples collected from China and Australia. Furthermore, this marker gene was also detected in all untreated wastewater samples, whose concentrations ranged from 5.54 to 6.89 GC/L. In China, the concentrations of Bifi marker gene were approximately two orders of magnitude lower than Bacteroides HF183/BacR287 and CrAssphage CPQ_56. The concentration of Bifi marker gene in Australian untreated wastewater was 1.35 log 10 greater than in China. Our results suggest that Bifi marker gene could be used as a wastewater-associated marker gene in Asia. If additional sensitivity is required, this marker gene should be paired with crAssphage and HF183/BacR287 in environmental studies. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Regulation low-frequency noise and vibrations is always a challenging issue in engineering. Metamaterials represent a novel class of materials distinguished by their special mechanical properties. Through meticulous material and structural engineering, regulation of the sound wave transmission can be achieved. A model with a tetragonal negative Poisson ratio is proposed and its transmission properties is thoroughly analyzed. Investigating the impact of structural parameters on band characteristics reveals the regulation mechanism. In the bandgap, the model demonstrates outstanding vibration isolation performance, achieving isolation effects exceeding −100 dB for displacement excitation. Fine-tuning unit sizes and array parameters lead to adjustment of the vibration isolation frequency band, resulting in excellent performance. Specifically, the vibration isolation performance first increases and then decreases as the cone angle θ decreases. It amplifies as the feature length $b$ increases. The relationship between the modals corresponding to certain energy bands and vibration isolation was also studied. The vibration isolation band is offset to a lower frequency by introducing a mass block. Efficient vibration isolation in the frequency range of 80~2000 Hz can be achieved within a thickness of 30 mm, meeting predefined performance standards.

Flower-Like Cellulose Nanocrystals Mediated Zno for Antibacterial Packaging Without Activation of Ultraviolet

Conventional light-driven antibacterial strategies of zinc oxide (ZnO) were limited by the harmful effects of UV light on human health and inadequate illumination in dark environments. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) was utilized as template to synthesize flower-like ZnO composite (C@Z), which generates superoxide anions without the need of UV light excitation. Initially, the CNC was carboxylated and crosslinked to fabricate network-structure (MCNC). Effects of reaction temperature, pH value, reaction time, zinc acetate concentration and MCNC content on the control of ZnO composite morphology and antibacterial properties were comprehensively considered, furthermore the growth mechanism of ZnO was discussed. Subsequently, the obtained MCNC/ZnO(C@Z) antibacterial composite was filtered to prepare C@Z paper (P-C@Z) for blueberry preservation. The results show that P-C@Z achieved an inhibition rate of over 99.8% against both S. aureus and E. coli under dark conditions, which is attributed to the release of zinc ions and the generation of superoxide anions. Additionally, the P-C@Z exhibited low toxicity to cells and significantly extended the shelf life of blueberries to over 18 days. This finding provides valuable insights for the design of novel antibacterial packaging. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Third-generation EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors(TKIs),exemplified by osimertinib,have demonstrated promising clinical efficacy in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Our previous work has identified ASK120067 as a novel third-generation EGFR TKI with remarkable antitumor effects that has undergone New Drug Application(NDA)submission in *** substantial progress,acquired resistance to EGFR-TKIs remains a significant challenge,impeding the long-term effectiveness of therapeutic *** this study,we conducted a comprehensive investigation utilizing high-throughput proteomics analysis on established TKI-resistant tumor models,and found a notable upregulation of branched-chain amino acid transaminase 1(BCAT1)expression in both osimertinib-and ASK120067-resistant tumors compared with the parental TKI-sensitive NSCLC *** depletion or pharmacological inhibition of BCAT1 impaired the growth of resistant cells and partially re-sensitized tumor cells to EGFR ***,upregulated BCAT1 in resistant cells reprogrammed branched-chain amino acid(BCAA)metabolism and promoted alpha ketoglutarate(α-KG)-dependent demethylation of lysine 27 on histone H3(H3K27)and subsequent transcriptional derepression of glycolysis-related genes,thereby enhancing glycolysis and promoting tumor ***,we identified WQQ-345 as a novel BCAT1 inhibitor exhibiting antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo against TKI-resistant lung cancer with high BCAT1 *** summary,our study highlighted the crucial role of BCAT1 in mediating resistance to third-generation EGFR-TKIs through epigenetic activation of glycolysis in NSCLC,thereby supporting BCAT1 as a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of TKI-resistant NSCLC.

Si is known to have an extremely high theoretical capacity and regarded as an optimal anode candidate for the next-generation LIBs. But unfortunately, the dramatic volume change during repeated charge/discharge processes leads to its repaid capacity fading. Here we report a novel composite functional binder, which is constructed by cross-linking PEDOT: PSS and CMC by C-O-S bonds. The obtained polymeric binder features superb electrical conductivity, strong interactions (hydrogen bonds) between binder and Si surface and robust mechanical strength through cross-linking, thus the structural and electrochemical properties of the Si anode was dramatically improved, including the smooth electrode surface and the low electrode expansion rate after repeated cycles, as well as the high initial capacity (3892 mAh∙g-1) and coulomb efficiency (81%), the excellent capacity retention (1106.4 mAh∙g-1 after 100 cycles) and rate capability (600 mAh∙g-1 at 5 A∙g-1). © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Is Biochar a Reliable Catalyst for Activating Persulfate? Damage of Biochar During Catalytic Process

Biochar has been believed as a low cost and metal-free catalysts for persulfate activation. However, the performance decreases of biochar after participating in the reaction, and the extent of damage to biochar remain poorly understood due to its intricate carbon structure. In this study, cotton stalk and walnut shell biochar were used to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for sulfadimidine degradation, and multiple characterization methods were used to determine the damage of biochar. The comparative experiments of biochar, recycled biochar, and PDS corroded biochar in catalytic reaction showed that the performance of biochars decreased by 37.5%-65.3%. After participating in the catalytic reaction, the unstable carbon in biochar was lost, and the surface of cotton stalk biochar was oxidized, which reduced its affinity to organic matter. CO2 physisorption showed that the pore structure of biochars barely changed. However, for walnut shell biochar, its adsorption capacity of nitrogen decreased obviously. Moreover, electrochemical tests showed that the conductivity of walnut shell biochar was reduced, which may lead to a decrease in the efficiency of the non-free radical pathway. Overall, the influences of catalytic process on biochar cannot be ignored, so more efforts are needed to make biochar an efficient and sustainable PDS activator. © 2022, The Authors. Deep-Learning-Based Automated Tracking and Counting of Living Plankton in Natural Aquatic Environments

Plankton are widely distributed in the aquatic environment and serve as an indicator of water quality. Monitoring the spatiotemporal variation in plankton is an efficient approach to forewarning environmental risks. However, conventional microscopy counting is time-consuming and laborious, hindering the application of plankton statistics for environmental monitoring. In this work, an automated video-oriented plankton tracking workflow (AVPTW) based on deep learning is proposed for continuous monitoring of living plankton abundance in aquatic environments. With automatic video acquisition, background calibration, detection, tracking, correction, and statistics, various types of moving zooplankton and phytoplankton were counted at a time scale. The accuracy of AVPTW was validated with conventional counting via microscopy. Since AVPTW is only sensitive to mobile plankton, the temperature- and wastewater-discharge-induced plankton population variations were monitored online, demonstrating the sensitivity of AVPTW to environmental changes. The robustness of AVPTW was also confirmed with natural water samples from a contaminated river and an uncontaminated lake. Notably, automated workflows are essential for generating large amounts of data, which are a prerequisite for available data set construction and subsequent data mining. Furthermore, data-driven approaches based on deep learning pave a novel way for long-term online environmental monitoring and elucidating the correlation underlying environmental indicators. This work provides a replicable paradigm to combine imaging devices with deep-learning algorithms for environmental monitoring.

Currently, the convergence of climate change, population growth, and deteriorating water quality has triggered a scarcity of freshwater resources, presenting substantial hurdles for agricultural endeavors. Consequently, repurposing treated wastewater for agricultural use is gaining prominence. This strategy offers a noteworthy advantage by furnishing an alternative water source, distinct from conventional freshwater, for agricultural irrigation. The considered irrigation water categories encompass treated wastewater, sewage treated with supplementary fertilization, treated water of a specific quality, and treated water quality fortified with fertilizer. An assessment of the treated wastewater extracted from the Imzouren-Bni Bouayach treatment facility was undertaken, encompassing scrutiny of its physical, chemical, and bacteriological attributes. This analysis yielded measurements for a range of parameters, including pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, suspended matter, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci. These measurements align with acceptable thresholds for direct discharge and are following Morocco's established water quality standards tailored for irrigation. In light of the soil analysis, the soil is classified as alkaline, with a pH of 8.2, and displays low salinity, evidenced by an electrical conductivity of 2.42 mS/cm. Furthermore, the soil exhibits deficiencies in organic matter and essential nutrients, with carbon content measuring 0.84%, organic matter at 1.45%, nitrogen at 0.07%, phosphorus at 10.6 mg/L, and potassium at 56.5 mg/L. The utilization of treated wastewater for irrigation purposes bestows the crop with a dependable water supply, ensuring stability in its growth. © 2023 Policy Studies Organization.

Humans have relied on biomass for survival and development since the Stone Age. All aspects of human needs for materials are covered by tools, fuel, and buildings. Nowadays, metals and petroleum-based materials are widely used in highly developed industries. Unfortunately, environmental contamination and the loss of natural resources have led to the reemergence of biomass resources as efficient and sustainable energy sources. Notably, simple and direct applications can no longer meet the demand for functionalization, high performance of materials and construction materials. Therefore, it is imperative to modify biomass and combine its utilisation to produce functionalization and high performance materials. For example, construction materials with superior mechanical properties and water resistance can be produced by reinforcing fibres to facilitate crosslinking. Water-oil separation or adsorption effects of hydrogels and aerogels are determined by the porosity and lightness of biomass, biocomposite conductor is prepared by chimaeric conductive material. Here, we review the approaches that have been taken to devise an environmentally friendly yet fully recyclable and sustainable functionalised biocomposites from biomass and its potential directions for future research.
