Analysis of traffic condition is of great significance to urban planning and public administration. However, traditional traffic condition analysis approaches mainly rely on sensors, which are high-cost and limit their coverage. To solve these problems, we propose a semi-supervised learning method which uses the social network data instead and analyzes the traffic condition based on user’s emotion tendency. First we train the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model to estimate the sentiment of microblog with traffic information, then using the emotional tendency to predict whether traffic jams happen or not. In order to reduce the data annotated by manpower, we propose a new idea to employ the Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (CGAN) to generate samples which are as a supplement to the training set of GRU. Finally compared with the GRU model trained by solely the manual annotation data, our method improves the classification accuracy by 4.07%. We also use our model to predict the time and roads of traffic jams in 4 Chinese cities which is proved to be effective. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG.

Since the long short-term memory (LSTM) network is a sequential structure, it is difficult to effectively represent the structural level information of the context. Sentiment analysis based on the original LSTM causes a problem of structural level information loss, and its capacity to capture the context information is finite. To address this problem, we proposed a novel structure-attention-based LSTM as a hierarchical structure model. It may capture relevant information in the context as much as possible. We propose HM (ht matrix) to storage the structural information of the context. Furthermore, we introduce the attention mechanism to realize vector selection. Compared with the original LSTM and normal attention-based sentiment classification methods, our model obtains a higher classification precision. It is proved that the structure-attention-based method proposed in this study has an advantage in capturing the potential semantic structure. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG.

Finding communities in networks is one of the challenging issues in complex network research. We have to deal with very large networks that contain billions of vertices, which makes community discovery a computationally intensive work. Moreover, communities usually overlap each other, which greatly increases the difficulty of identifying the boundaries of communities. In this paper, we propose a parallel multi-label propagation algorithm (PMLPA) that enhances traditional multi-label propagation algorithm (MLPA) in two ways. First, the critical steps of MLPA are parallelized based on the MapReduce model to get higher scalability. Second, new label updating strategy is used to automatically determine the most valuable labels of each vertex. Furthermore, we study the improvement of PMLPA through considering the influence of vertices and labels on label updating. In this way, the importance of each label can be described with higher precision. Experiments on artificial and real networks prove that the proposed algorithms can achieve both high discovering accuracy and high scalability. © 2017 World Scientific Publishing Company.

In this paper, we propose a novel method, simple iterative clustering on graphs (SICG), to deal with robust model fitting problems. Specifically, we first construct a graph, where each vertex denotes a model hypothesis and each edge represents the similarity between two model hypotheses, for model fitting. We then propose a simple iterative clustering algorithm, which adapts the k-medoids clustering algorithm, to intuitively estimate model instances in data. The proposed SICG method is able to effectively fit and segment multiple-structure data contaminated with a large number of outliers and noises. Experimental results show that SICG achieves superior fitting results over several state-of-the-art model fitting methods on real images.

In this work, we focus on visual venue category prediction, which can facilitate various applications for locationbased service and personalization. Considering that the complementarity of different media platforms, it is reasonable to leverage venue-relevant media data from different platforms to boost the prediction performance. Intuitively, recognizing one venue category involves multiple semantic cues, especially objects and scenes, and thus they should contribute together to venue category prediction. In addition, these venues can be organized in a natural hierarchical structure, which provides prior knowledge to guide venue category estimation. Taking these aspects into account, we propose a Hierarchy-dependent Cross-platform Multi-view Feature Learning (HCM-FL) framework for venue category prediction from videos by leveraging images from other platforms. HCM-FL includes two major components, namely Cross-Platform Transfer Deep Learning (CPTDL) and Multi-View Feature Learning with the Hierarchical Venue Structure (MVFL-HVS). CPTDL is capable of reinforcing the learned deep network from videos using images from other platforms. Specifically, CPTDL first trained a deep network using videos. These images from other platforms are filtered by the learnt network and these selected images are then fed into this learnt network to enhance it. Two kinds of pre-Trained networks on the ImageNet and Places dataset are employed. Therefore, we can harness both object-oriented and scene-oriented deep features through these enhanced deep networks. MVFL-HVS is then developed to enable multi-view feature fusion. It is capable of embedding the hierarchical structure ontology to support more discriminative joint feature learning. We conduct the experiment on videos from Vine and images from Foursqure. Anatomy of an online misinformation network

Massive amounts of fake news and conspiratorial content have spread over social media before and after the 2016 US Presidential Elections despite intense fact-checking efforts. How do the spread of misinformation and fact-checking compete? What are the structural and dynamic characteristics of the core of the misinformation diffusion network, and who are its main purveyors? How to reduce the overall amount of misinformation? To explore these questions we built Hoaxy, an open platform that enables large-scale, systematic studies of how misinformation and fact-checking spread and compete on Twitter. Hoaxy filters public tweets that include links to unverified claims or fact-checking articles. We perform k-core decomposition on a diffusion network obtained from two million retweets produced by several hundred thousand accounts over the six months before the election. As we move from the periphery to the core of the network, fact-checking nearly disappears, while social bots proliferate. The number of users in the main core reaches equilibrium around the time of the election, with limited churn and increasingly dense connections. We conclude by quantifying how effectively the network can be disrupted by penalizing the most central nodes. These findings provide a first look at the anatomy of a massive online misinformation diffusion network. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Maxwell-Hydrodynamic Model for Simulating Nonlinear Terahertz Generation from Plasmonic Metasurfaces

The interaction between electromagnetic field and plasmonic nanostructures leads to both strong linear and nonlinear behaviors. In this paper, a time-domain hydrodynamic model for describing the motion of electrons in plasmonic nanostructures is presented, in which both surface and bulk nonlinearity are considered. A coupled Maxwell-hydrodynamic system capturing full-wave physics and free-electron dynamics is numerically solved with the parallel finite-difference time-domain method. The validation of the proposed method is presented by simulating a plasmonic metasurface. The linear response is compared with the Drude dispersion model and the nonlinear terahertz emission from a difference-frequency generation process is theoretically analyzed. The work is fundamentally important to design nonlinear plasmonic nanodevices, especially for efficient and broadband THz emitters. © 2016 IEEE.

Fractal and multifractal properties of various systems have been studied extensively. In this paper, first, the multivariate multifractal detrend cross-correlation analysis (MMXDFA) is proposed to investigate the multifractal features in multivariate time series. MMXDFA may produce oscillations in the fluctuation function and spurious cross correlations. In order to overcome these problems, we then propose the multivariate multifractal temporally weighted detrended cross-correlation analysis (MMTWXDFA). In relation to the multivariate detrended cross-correlation analysis and multifractal temporally weighted detrended cross-correlation analysis, an innovation of MMTWXDFA is the application of the signed Manhattan distance to calculate the local detrended covariance function. To evaluate the performance of the MMXDFA and MMTWXDFA methods, we apply them on some artificially generated multivariate series. Several numerical tests demonstrate that both methods can identify their fractality, but MMTWXDFA can detect long-range cross correlations and simultaneously quantify the levels of cross correlation between two multivariate series more accurately.

This paper extends frequency domain quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) methods pursuing higher sensitivity to detect Brain Developmental Disorders. Prior qEEG work lacked integration of cross-spectral information omitting important functional connectivity descriptors. Lack of geographical diversity precluded accounting for site-specific variance, increasing qEEG nuisance variance. We ameliorate these weaknesses. (i) Create lifespan Riemannian multinational qEEG norms for cross-spectral tensors. These norms result from the HarMNqEEG project fostered by the Global Brain Consortium. We calculate the norms with data from 9 countries, 12 devices, and 14 studies, including 1564 subjects. Instead of raw data, only anonymized metadata and EEG cross spectral tensors were shared. After visual and automatic quality control, developmental equations for the mean and standard deviation of qEEG traditional and Riemannian DPs were calculated using additive mixed-effects models. We demonstrate qEEG "batch effects " and provide methods to calculate harmonized z-scores. (ii) We also show that harmonized Riemannian norms produce z-scores with increased diagnostic accuracy predicting brain dysfunction produced by malnutrition in the first year of life and detecting COVID induced brain dysfunction. (iii) We offer open code and data to calculate different individual z-scores from the HarMNqEEG dataset. These results contribute to developing bias-free, low-cost neuroimaging technologies applicable in various health settings.

Food is very essential for human life and it is fundamental to the human experience. Food-related study may support multifarious applications and services, such as guiding the human behavior, improving the human health and understanding the culinary culture. With the rapid development of social networks, mobile networks, and Internet of Things (IoT), people commonly upload, share, and record food images, recipes, cooking videos, and food diaries, leading to large-scale food data. Large-scale food data offers rich knowledge about food and can help tackle many central issues of human society. Therefore, it is time to group several disparate issues related to food computing. Food computing acquires and analyzes heterogenous food data from disparate sources for perception, recognition, retrieval, recommendation, and monitoring of food. In food computing, computational approaches are applied to address food related issues in medicine, biology, gastronomy and agronomy. Both large-scale food data and recent breakthroughs in computer science are transforming the way we analyze food data. Therefore, vast amounts of work has been conducted in the food area, targeting different food-oriented tasks and applications. However, there are very few systematic reviews, which shape this area well and provide a comprehensive and in-depth summary of current efforts or detail open problems in this area. In this paper, we formalize food computing and present such a comprehensive overview of various emerging concepts, methods, and tasks. We summarize key challenges and future directions ahead for food computing. This is the first comprehensive survey that targets the study of computing technology for the food area and also offers a collection of research studies and technologies to benefit researchers and practitioners working in different food-related fields.
