Real-world data is often unbalanced and exhibits long-tailed distribution over classes. Vanilla classification models trained on imbalanced datasets inherently exhibit bias towards dominant classes. Existing debiasing methods mostly balance the data or the loss during training. Nevertheless, these data-acquiring methods are not suitable for situations where training data are unavailable. In this paper, we appeal to solutions without access to training data and propose a datafree debiasing (Free-D) method that serves as a plug-and-play module for any standard classification model. Specifically, our method adjusts both the feature representation via feature representation shifting and the classifier weight via class prior compensation in a data-free manner. We evaluate and compare our methods on four long-tailed visual recognition datasets, i.e., long-tailed CIFAR-10/-100, ImageNet-LT, and Places-LT. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed data-free method achieves comparable results of other data-acquired methods. © 2022 IEEE.

The growing interest in generating recipes from food images has drawn substantial research attention in recent years. Existing works for recipe generation primarily utilize a two-stage training method—first predicting ingredients from a food image and then generating instructions from both the image and ingredients. Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs), which have achieved notable success across a variety of vision and language tasks, shed light on generating both ingredients and instructions directly from images. Nevertheless, LMMs still face the common issue of hallu-cinations during recipe generation, leading to suboptimal performance. To tackle this issue, we propose a retrieval augmented large multimodal model for recipe generation. We first introduce Stochastic Diversified Retrieval Augmentation (SDRA) to retrieve recipes semantically related to the image from an existing datastore as a supplement, integrating them into the prompt to add diverse and rich context to the input image. Additionally, Self-Consistency Ensemble Voting mechanism is proposed to determine the most confident prediction recipes as the final output. It calculates the consistency among generated recipe candidates, which use different retrieval recipes as context for generation. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed method, which demonstrates state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance in recipe generation on the Recipe1M dataset.

A Sparsity Knowledge Transfer-Based Evolutionary Algorithm for Large-Scale Multitasking Multi-Objective Optimization

Multitasking multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MMEAs) have been extensively studied in the past decade, which mainly concentrate on multitasking multi-objective optimization problems (MMOPs) with dozens of decision variables. Nevertheless, many real-world MMOPs have thousands of decision variables and are of sparse nature, which are regarded as large-scale MMOPs (LSMMOPs) in this study. To address LSMMOPs, a sparsity knowledge transfer-based evolutionary multi-objective algorithm, termed EMO-SKT, is proposed for efficiently finding high-quality sparse solutions of LSMMOPs. For each target optimization task, a sparsity knowledge transfer strategy extracts sparse distribution information from a source task and incorporates the information into the target task for two types of sparsity knowledge: variable importance and sparse degree. The variable importance is utilized to produce high-quality sparse solutions during the evolutionary search for EMO-SKT, while the sparse degree facilitates the reduction of search space and thus speeds up the convergence of the evolutionary search. Experimental results on eight benchmark problems and six practical LSMMOPs demonstrate the effectiveness of the sparsity knowledge transfer strategy. Furthermore, the proposed EMO-SKT is capable of efficiently finding high-quality sparse solutions on an LSMMOP with over 1000 decision variables. In comparison with five state-of-the-art multitasking or sparse optimization algorithms, the proposed EMO-SKT exhibits superior performance in terms of both solution quality and search efficiency. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

Communities exist anywhere in various complex networks, and community evolution tracking is one of the most well-liked areas of inquiry in the study of dynamic complex networks. Community evolution tracking has many applications in daily life, such as predicting social network behaviors or analyzing the spread of infectious illnesses. However, the majority of existing evolution tracking algorithms obtain community detection results before matching the community in tracking evolution events, making it difficult to trace the whole evolution of communities because of community matching errors. In addition, the majority of evolution tracking algorithms do not adequately account for the potential scenarios in community evolution, resulting in erroneous detection of evolution events. In this research, a community evolution tracking algorithm based on edge variation discerning and core node extension is proposed. First, we detect communities based on the core node extension strategy, which avoids the problem of community matching errors. Second, we track community evolution based on the edge variation discerning strategy, which fully considers various situations that may occur during the community evolution process. According to the outputs of our experiments, our system can effectively track the evolution of communities in synthetic dynamic networks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Strong noise is one of the biggest challenges in controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) exploration, which severely affects the quality of the recorded signal. We develop a novel and effective CSEM noise attenuation method that integrates a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with a high-quality sounding curve screening mechanism. This method first uses a DCNN to learn the large-scale noise characteristics of CSEM measured data and build a DCNN denoising model for attenuating the noise. Because some impulse noise remains after DCNN denoising, the high-quality sounding curve screening mechanism is innovatively applied to optimize the DCNN denoised data. The core of this method is the smoothness value (SV), which quantitatively evaluates the smoothness of the sounding curve (apparent resistivity curve). In effect, the mechanism segments the overall DCNN denoised data and calculates the corresponding sounding curve and its SV for each segment. The highest-quality sounding curve can be screened out by comparing the SVs of all curves as well as obtaining the highest-quality data segment present in the overall DCNN denoised data. Finally, our method is validated with synthetic and field data, demonstrating its feasibility and effectiveness in attenuating large-scale CSEM noise. The quality of CSEM data, which is heavily affected by noise, is significantly improved after processing by our method. © 2025 Society of Exploration Geophysicists. All rights reserved.

The Area Under the ROC Curve (AUC) is a well-known metric for evaluating instance-level long-tail learning problems. In the past two decades, many AUC optimization methods have been proposed to improve model performance under long-tail distributions. In this paper, we explore AUC optimization methods in the context of pixel-level long-tail semantic segmentation, a much more complicated scenario. This task introduces two major challenges for AUC optimization techniques. On one hand, AUC optimization in a pixel-level task involves complex coupling across loss terms, with structured inner-image and pairwise inter-image dependencies, complicating theoretical analysis. On the other hand, we find that mini-batch estimation of AUC loss in this case requires a larger batch size, resulting in an unaffordable space complexity. To address these issues, we develop a pixel-level AUC loss function and conduct a dependency-graph-based theoretical analysis of the algorithm's generalization ability. Additionally, we design a Tail-Classes Memory Bank (T-Memory Bank) to manage the significant memory demand. Finally, comprehensive experiments across various benchmarks confirm the effectiveness of our proposed AUCSeg method. Knowledge tracing (KT) is a crucial task in online learning, aimed at tracing and predicting each student's knowledge states throughout their learning process. Over the past decade, it has garnered widespread attention due to it provides the potential for more tailored and adaptive online learning experiences. Although most current KT methodologies emphasize optimizing network structures to enhance predictive accuracy for future student performance, they often neglect anomalous interactions in students' learning processes, which may arise from low data quality (i.e., inferior question quality) and abnormal student behaviors (i.e., guessing and mistakes). To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel framework, termed HD-KT, designed to enhance the robustness of existing KT methodologies with Hybrid learning interactions Denoising approach. Specifically, we introduce two detectors for anomalous learning interactions, namely knowledge state-guided anomaly detector and student profile-guided anomaly detector. In the first detection module, we design a sequential autoencoder to identify anomalous learning interactions by detecting atypical student knowledge states. In the second module, we incorporate an attention mechanism by modeling a student's long-term profile to capture irregular interactions. Extensive experiments on four real-world benchmark datasets have decisively shown our HD-KT markedly boosts the robustness of numerous prevailing KT models, consequently increasing the accuracy of future student performance predictions. Additionally, our case studies highlight the versatility of HD-KT in addressing diverse downstream tasks, such as exercise quality analysis and learning behavior-based student clustering. © 2024 ACM.
