The Area under the ROC curve (AUC) is a well-known ranking metric for problems such as imbalanced learning and recommender systems. The vast majority of existing AUC-optimization-based machine learning methods only focus on binary-class cases, while leaving the multiclass cases unconsidered. In this paper, we start an early trial to consider the problem of learning multiclass scoring functions via optimizing multiclass AUC metrics. Our foundation is based on the M metric, which is a well-known multiclass extension of AUC. We first pay a revisit to this metric, showing that it could eliminate the imbalance issue from the minority class pairs. Motivated by this, we propose an empirical surrogate risk minimization framework to approximately optimize the M metric. Theoretically, we show that: (i) optimizing most of the popular differentiable surrogate losses suffices to reach the Bayes optimal scoring function asymptotically;(ii) the training framework enjoys an imbalance-aware generalization error bound, which pays more attention to the bottleneck samples of minority classes compared with the traditional O(p1/N) result. Practically, to deal with the low scalability of the computational operations, we propose acceleration methods for three popular surrogate loss functions, including the exponential loss, squared loss, and hinge loss, to speed up loss and gradient evaluations. Roll surface wear morphology directly affects the surface quality of steel plates and even affects the texture composition of plates and strip steel products. Using image processing methods to judge the wear state of a roll is low cost, easy to operate, and easy to realize an automatic smart data processing system. In this paper, we propose a Smart Roll Wear Check (SRWC) scheme for ensuring the rolling quality of steel plates. In the SRWC scheme, roll surface images in different wear stages are analyzed, from which seventeen dimension features are extracted. At the same time, the fractal theory is introduced to explore the relationship between fractal dimensions and roll wear degree. The results show that four characteristic parameters, such as roundness, equivalent area circle radius, second moment and texture entropy, and the fractal dimension can be used as effective parameters to quantitatively judge roll wear state. Lastly, a back-propagation (BP) neural network model for recognition and judgment for roll wear is established. It provides an experimental test to show that the five parameters as a quantitative evaluation for roll wear morphology are effective. By processing the data on the images, the SRWC scheme can demonstrate whether the roll needs to get off mill in time, so as to avoid the hidden danger of safety and ensure the rolling quality of the steel plate. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Comparative study of Hermitian and non-Hermitian topological dielectric photonic crystals

The effects of gain and loss on the band structures of a bulk topological dielectric photonic crystal (PC) with C6v symmetry and the PC-air-PC interface are studied based on first-principle calculation. To illustrate the importance of parity-time (PT) symmetry, three systems are considered, namely the PT-symmetric, PT-asymmetric, and lossy systems. We find that the system with gain and loss distributed in a PT symmetric manner exhibits a phase transition from a PT exact phase to a PT broken phase as the strength of the gain and loss increases, while for the PT-asymmetric and lossy systems, no such phase transition occurs. Furthermore, based on the Wilson loop calculation, the topology of the PT-symmetric system in the PT exact phase is demonstrated to keep unchanged as the Hermitian system. At last, different kinds of edge states in Hermitian systems under the influences of gain and loss are studied and we find that while the eigenfrequencies of nontrivial edge states become complex conjugate pairs, they keep real for the trivial defect states. Synaptic learning with augmented spikes

Traditional neuron models use analog values for information representation and computation, while all-or-nothing spikes are employed in the spiking ones. With a more brain-like processing paradigm, spiking neurons are more promising for improvements on efficiency and computational capability. They extend the computation of traditional neurons with an additional dimension of time carried by all-or-nothing spikes. Could one benefit from both the accuracy of analog values and the time-processing capability of spikes? In this paper, we introduce a concept of augmented spikes to carry complementary information with spike coefficients in addition to spike latencies. New augmented spiking neuron model and synaptic learning rules are proposed to process and learn patterns of augmented spikes. We provide systematic insight into the properties and characteristics of our methods, including classification of augmented spike patterns, learning capacity, construction of causality, feature detection, robustness and applicability to practical tasks such as acoustic and visual pattern recognition. The remarkable results highlight the effectiveness and potential merits of our methods. Importantly, our augmented approaches are versatile and can be easily generalized to other spike-based systems, contributing to a potential development for them including neuromorphic computing. Rumor is one of the main problems in social media, which often shows deeply and rapidly undesirable affection on the society. Although many rumor detection models consider content features and social features, all of them are based on the word independence assumption, which lacks the sequence context. Thus, if we use some words that often appear in rumors, our posts will be recognized as a rumor. To solve this problem, we propose a deep sequence context model (DSCM) for Chinese microblog rumor detection. This model considers two important factors of rumors: falsity and influence. Firstly, to learn falsity, we abolish the word independence assumption and use long short-term memory (LSTM) units to capture bi-direction sequence context information in content. Secondly, to learn influence, we combine the deep sequence context information with social features to learn the connection between content and social features. In our experiment, our results show that our approach outperforms several state-of-the-art machine learning approaches, including term frequency and inverse document frequency (TFIDF), LSTM, and gated recurrent unit (GRU) in rumor detection. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The state of health (SOH) and remaining useful life (RUL) prediction of lithium-ion batteries are critical for the safe operation and maintenance optimization of electrical systems. However, existing methods face challenges in generalization ability and prediction accuracy, including the limitations of single-task learning for joint SOH and RUL prediction, sensitivity to complex operating conditions, and the impact of cross-domain data distribution differences. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a dual-representation transferable knowledge sharing network (DRTKSN) to predict SOH and RUL for batteries. The proposed algorithm is based on the framework of multi task learning (MTL) and Transfer Learning. By extracting and fusing dual-representation data features, the framework effectively captures the latent patterns of battery aging characteristics. It employs parameter and network structure sharing mechanisms to enhance the adaptability and generalization of cross-domain features. The proposed model achieves information collaboration between SOH and RUL tasks through a shared network, effectively reducing computational costs and improving prediction accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework exhibits excellent robustness and transferability in complex degradation scenarios, significantly outperforming baseline models. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

One of the critical challenges of object counting is the dramatic scale variations, which is introduced by arbitrary perspectives. We propose a reverse perspective network to solve the scale variations of input images, instead of generating perspective maps to smooth final outputs. The reverse perspective network explicitly evaluates the perspective distortions, and efficiently corrects the distortions by uniformly warping the input images. Then the proposed network delivers images with similar instance scales to the regressor. Thus the regression network doesn't need multi-scale receptive fields to match the various scales. Besides, to further solve the scale problem of more congested areas, we enhance the corresponding regions of ground-truth with the evaluation errors. Then we force the regressor to learn from the augmented ground-truth via an adversarial process. Furthermore, to verify the proposed model, we collected a vehicle counting dataset based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The proposed dataset has fierce scale variations. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show the improvements of our method against the state-of-the-arts.

Video-based person re-identification is an important research area in computer vision. Quality Aware Network(QAN) is a model that is robust to noise in the videos. It calculates the weighted average of all the frames' image features, with each frame's quality score as the weight, and generates a video feature. However, the QAN has poor ability to distinguish pedestrians with highly similar clothing. To address this problem, we analyze the advantages and shortcomings of Quality Pooling and Max Pooling in theory, and propose the Frame Quality and Max Pooling based Late Feature Fusion Method(QMFF). It aims at enhancing the QAN's ability to distinguish pedestrians with similar clothing. First, use Quality Pooling to get the initial ranking list. Then, for each Query, judge whether the top-N candidates in the ranking list are highly similar in clothing to one another. If the Query meets the similarity criterion, Max Pooling with Frame Quality Filter is used. Local salient features selected by Max Pooling help distinguish pedestrians more accurately. Experimental results on the iLIDS-VID dataset show that the proposed method is superior to the QAN and many recently proposed methods.

Strains from the Cryptococcus gattii species complex(CGSC)have caused the Pacific Northwest cryptococcosis outbreak,the largest cluster of lifethreatening fungal infections in otherwise healthy human hosts known to *** this study,we utilized a pan-phenome-based method to assess the fitness outcomes of CGSC strains under 31 stress conditions,providing a comprehensive overview of 2,821 phenotype-strain associations within this pathogenic *** clustering analysis revealed a strong correlation between distinct types of stress phenotypes in a subset of CGSC strains,suggesting that shared determinants coordinate their adaptations to various ***,a specific group of strains,including the outbreak isolates,exhibited a remarkable ability to adapt to all three of the most commonly used antifungal drugs for treating cryptococcosis(amphotericin B,5-fluorocytosine,and fluconazole).By integrating pan-genomic and pan-transcriptomic analyses,we identified previously unrecognized genes that play crucial roles in conferring multidrug resistance in an outbreak strain with high multidrug *** these genes,we identified biomarkers that enable the accurate prediction of highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains,achieving maximum accuracy and area under the curve(AUC)of 0.79 and 0.86,respectively,using machine learning ***,we developed a pan-omic approach to identify cryptococcal multidrug resistance determinants and predict highly multidrug-adapted CGSC strains that may pose significant clinical concern.

Energy efficiency basically refers to how effectively energy can be utilised or consumed by any virtualised data centre giving cloud administrations. Since Genetic Algorithm (GA) is an acceptable method to solve the VM placement problem, this research formulates the Virtual Machine (VM) placement problem as a constrained optimisation problem. A considerable amount of residual resources is available for each new VM allocation, however they are distributed across multiple active PMs, rendering them inefficient. Our research focuses on improving a data centre’s energy and time efficiency by devising a technique to decrease PM’s residual resources and make them more valuable. As the most time consuming element of a GA is calculating the fitness function, this paper presents a new fitness function to simplify the fitness function calculation in GA. The results are compared to the standard GA and First Fit Decreasing (FFD) algorithm. The findings reveals a 8% energy savings for our GA compared to FFD and a 66% reduction in our GA execution time compared to the standard GA for virtualised data centres. The simulation experiments are conducted on small-, medium- and large-scale of the google data centre to demonstrate the effectiveness of our GA. © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.
