Inpainting is a task to restore occlusion or other corruption on images. However, previous works require mask of the occluded area to restore the occluded image, which is inconvenient for application. Blind face inpainting aims to automatically restore the occluded face without position information of the corrupt region. In this paper, we propose a novel fine-grained blind face inpainting framework, combining 3D face components disentanglement with generative network. Canonical face texture and shape disentangled by unsupervised 3D face model is restored separately to get occlusion-free rendered result. Finally, the pixel-to-pixel generative module utilize the occlusion image and the coarse de-occlusion face to get refined inpainted result. We also build up a new dataset called CelebO-3D which consists of occluded face images synthesized with 3D occlusion and rendered by 3D face model. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method is effective and robust in face blind inpainting both in synthesized and real images. Extensive evaluations and comparison with previous methods also show our superior effectiveness and lightweight architecture.

Many few-shot learning approaches have been designed under the meta-learning framework, which learns from a variety of learning tasks and generalizes to new tasks. These meta-learning approaches achieve the expected performance in the scenario where all samples are drawn from the same distributions (i.i.d. observations). However, in real-world applications, few-shot learning paradigm often suffers from data shift, i.e., samples in different tasks, even in the same task, could be drawn from various data distributions. Most existing few-shot learning approaches are not designed with the consideration of data shift, and thus show downgraded performance when data distribution shifts. However, it is non-trivial to address the data shift problem in few-shot learning, due to the limited number of labeled samples in each task. Targeting at addressing this problem, we propose a novel metric-based meta-learning framework to extract task-specific representations and task-shared representations with the help of knowledge graph. The data shift within/between tasks can thus be combated by the combination of task-shared and task-specific representations. The proposed model is evaluated on popular benchmarks and two constructed new challenging datasets. The evaluation results demonstrate its remarkable performance.

The automatic detection of skin diseases via dermoscopic images can improve the efficiency in diagnosis and help doctors make more accurate judgments. However, conventional skin disease recognition systems may produce high confidence for out-of-distribution (OOD) data, which may become a major security vulnerability in practical applications. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale detection framework to detect out-of-distribution skin disease image data to ensure the robustness of the system. Our framework extracts features from different layers of the neural network. In the early layers, rectified activation is used to make the output features closer to the well-behaved distribution, and then an one-class SVM is trained to detect OOD data;in the penultimate layer, an adapted Gram matrix is used to calculate the features after rectified activation, and finally the layer with the best performance is chosen to compute a normality score. Experiments show that the proposed framework achieves superior performance when compared with other state-of-the-art methods in the task of skin disease recognition. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Depression has become a major global public health challenge. Social media texts reflect users’ emotional and psychological states, providing a valuable data source for depression detection through natural language analysis. However, current research still faces limitations in modeling the collaborative representation of user texts and dynamic behaviors. To address this, we propose MVDep, a model that integrates multi-view features to enhance social text representation for depression detection. Specifically, we enhance text representation by investigating depression from multi-view, including social media texts, user profiles, and social behaviors, enabling more effective depression detection. First, we conduct initial filtering of social media texts using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and then screen out the uncertain domain of data samples based on the three-way decision (3WD). Next, we extract quantified user profiles and social behavioral features to enhance the representation of depression tendencies for uncertain domain samples. Finally, we fuse the multi-view features derived from social media texts, user profiles and social behaviors, improving the model’s ability to detect depression. We evaluate our model on the SWDD dataset, demonstrating its superiority over state-of-the-art baseline models in depression detection tasks. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Modality Unified Attack for Omni-Modality Person Re-Identification

Deep learning based person re-identification (re-id) models have been widely employed in surveillance systems. Recent studies have demonstrated that black-box single-modality and cross-modality re-id models are vulnerable to adversarial examples (AEs), leaving the robustness of multi-modality re-id models unexplored. Due to the lack of knowledge about the specific type of model deployed in the target black-box surveillance system, we aim to generate modality unified AEs for omni-modality (single-, cross- and multi-modality) re-id models. Specifically, we propose a novel Modality Unified Attack method to train modality-specific adversarial generators to generate AEs that effectively attack different omni-modality models. A multi-modality model is adopted as the surrogate model, wherein the features of each modality are perturbed by metric disruption loss before fusion. To collapse the common features of omnimodality models, Cross Modality Simulated Disruption approach is introduced to mimic the cross-modality feature embeddings by intentionally feeding images to non-corresponding modality-specific subnetworks of the surrogate model. Moreover, Multi Modality Collaborative Disruption strategy is devised to facilitate the attacker to comprehensively corrupt the informative content of person images by leveraging a multi modality feature collaborative metric disruption loss. Extensive experiments show that our MUA method can effectively attack the omni-modality re-id models, achieving 55.9%, 24.4%, 49.0% and 62.7% mean mAP Drop Rate, respectively. © 2005-2012 IEEE.

Diffusion models are powerful generative models, and this capability can also be applied to discrimination. The inner activations of a pre-trained diffusion model can serve as features for discriminative tasks, namely, diffusion feature. We discover that diffusion feature has been hindered by a hidden yet universal phenomenon that we call content shift. To be specific, there are content differences between features and the input image, such as the exact shape of a certain object. We locate the cause of content shift as one inherent characteristic of diffusion models, which suggests the broad existence of this phenomenon in diffusion feature. Further empirical study also indicates that its negative impact is not negligible even when content shift is not visually perceivable. Hence, we propose to suppress content shift to enhance the overall quality of diffusion features. Specifically, content shift is related to the information drift during the process of recovering an image from the noisy input, pointing out the possibility of turning off-the-shelf generation techniques into tools for content shift suppression. We further propose a practical guideline named GATE to efficiently evaluate the potential benefit of a technique and provide an implementation of our methodology. Despite the simplicity, the proposed approach has achieved superior results on various tasks and datasets, validating its potential as a generic booster for diffusion features. EDGE: Unknown-aware Multi-label Learning by Energy Distribution Gap Expansion

Multi-label Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) detection aims to discriminate the OOD samples from the multi-label In-Distribution (ID) ones. Compared with its multiclass counterpart, it is crucial to model the joint information among classes. To this end, JointEnergy, which is a representative multi-label OOD inference criterion, summarizes the logits of all the classes. However, we find that JointEnergy can produce an imbalance problem in OOD detection, especially when the model lacks enough discrimination ability. Specifically, we find that the samples only related to minority classes tend to be classified as OOD samples due to the ambiguous energy decision boundary. Besides, imbalanced multi-label learning methods, originally designed for ID ones, would not be suitable for OOD detection scenarios, even producing a serious negative transfer effect. In this paper, we resort to auxiliary outlier exposure (OE) and propose an unknown-aware multi-label learning framework to reshape the uncertainty energy space layout. In this framework, the energy score is separately optimized for tail ID samples and unknown samples, and the energy distribution gap between them is expanded, such that the tail ID samples can have a significantly larger energy score than the OOD ones. What’s more, a simple yet effective measure is designed to select more informative OE datasets. Finally, comprehensive experimental results on multiple multi-label and OOD datasets reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2024, CC BY.

The development of the software and hardware has brought about the abundance and overflow of computing resources. Many Internet companies can lease idle computing resources based on the peak and valley cycles of usage load to provide IaaS service. After the surging development, more and more companies are gradually paying attention to the specific user experience in cloud computing. But there are few works about that aspect in load balance problem. Therefore, we consider the load balancing resource allocation problem, from the perspective of user experience, mainly based on geographical distance and regional Equilibrium, combined with user usage habits, in multiple service periods. A detailed mathematical definition has been established for this problem. This article proposes a mathematical model for the problem, along with an modified CMA-ES (Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy) algorithm, called WS-ESS-CMA-ES algorithm, to allocate computing resources and solve the above problem. The process of using the proposed algorithm to solve the problem of cloud computing resource allocation in real scenarios is simulated, and compared with some other algorithms. The transformational and spatial proximities are important cues for identifying inliers from an appearance based match set because correct matches generally stay close in input images and share similar local transformations. However, most existing approaches only check one type of them or both types consecutively with manually set thresholds, and thus their matching accuracy and flexibility in handling large-scale images are limited. In this paper, we present an efficient clustering based approach to identify match inliers with both proximities simultaneously. It first projects the putative matches into a joint transformational-spatial space, where mismatches tend to scatter all around while correct matches gather together. A mode-seeking process based on joint kernel density estimation is then proposed to obtain significant clusters in the joint space, where each cluster contains matches mapping the same object across images with high accuracy. Moreover, kernel bandwidths for measuring match proximities are adaptively set during density estimation, which enhances its applicability for matching different images. Experiments on three standard datasets show that the proposed approach delivers superior performance on a variety of feature matching tasks, including multi-object matching, duplicate object matching and object retrieval. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.
