MGCPN:An Efficient Deep Learning Model for Tibetan Plateau Precipitation Nowcasting Based on the IMERG Data

The sparse and uneven placement of rain gauges across the Tibetan Plateau(TP) impedes the acquisition of precise,high-resolution precipitation measurements,thus challenging the reliability of forecast *** address such a challenge,we introduce a model called Multisource Generative Adversarial Network-Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory(GAN-ConvLSTM) for Precipitation Nowcasting(MGCPN),which utilizes data products from the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for global precipitation measurement(IMERG) data,offering high spatiotemporal resolution precipitation forecasts for upcoming periods ranging from 30 to 300 *** results of our study confirm that the implementation of the MGCPN model successfully addresses the problem of underestimating and blurring precipitation results that often arise with increasing forecast *** issue is a common challenge in precipitation forecasting ***,we have used multisource spatiotemporal datasets with integrated geographic elements for training and prediction to improve model *** model demonstrates its competence in generating precise precipitation nowcasting with IMERG data,offering valuable support for precipitation research and forecasting in the TP *** metrics results obtained from our study further emphasize the notable advantages of the MGCPN model;it outperforms the other considered models in the probability of detection(POD),critical success index,Heidke Skill Score,and mean absolute error,especially showing improvements in POD by approximately 33%,19%,and 8% compared to Convolutional Gated Recurrent Unit(ConvGRU),ConvLSTM,and small Attention-UNet(SmaAt-UNet) models.

Increase in industrial activities leads to serious environmental pollution like contamination of water with deposition of heavy metal. Cadmium is one of the most important parameter in heavy metal which is a more poisonous metal, therefore an effective removal of this metal is needed more. So, an attempt has been made to evaluate the potential of an orange peel as an adsorptive material for the removal of cadmium metal from the polluted water by using small-scale column study. The water samples were collected from the industrial area of Chrompet, Chennai. Orange peel was used as a natural adsorbent to reduce the heavy metal concentration and carried out on a mini-column study. The aqueous solution of cadmium metal was prepared and mixed with the adsorbent for further analysis. In adsorption tests, the different dosage of adsorbent was applied. The adsorbent was characterized with SEM analysis. The efficiency of concentration removal was plotted in both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm graph. It shows that the isotherm values were from the range of 0.95 to 0.97, which was fitted to an isotherm graph for different dosage concentrations. The derived data showed that the orange peel used as an adsorbent was a promising technique that can reduce the cadmium level in the water. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Ground clutter contamination can be challenging for accurate wind estimation in wind profiler radars. Deep learning techniques can unlock nuanced wind behavior insights from complex spectral data, fostering advancements in atmospheric research. This paper primarily investigates the performance of three prominent deep learning architectures: GoogLeNet, SqueezeNet, and ResNet18, in classifying the wind profiler Doppler power spectrum contaminated by ground clutter. In the experimental evaluation, SqueezeNet got an accuracy of 99.7%, slightly outperforming the GoogLeNet and ResNet18 models that achieved an accuracy of 99.4% and 99.3%, respectively. The fivefold cross-validation results demonstrate the supremacy of the deep learning models. Furthermore, the explainability analysis unveiled the robustness and efficacy of the deep learning models in identifying ground clutter patterns within the Doppler power spectrum. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Recalibration of historical Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data facilitates the adjustment of data that have not undergone radiometric calibration or have suboptimal calibration accuracy, ensuring consistency among diverse historical images. This consistency is crucial for long-term sequential remote sensing quantitative applications. Traditional calibration methods based on artificial calibrators require the presence of such calibrators in historical data, a condition often unfulfilled, rendering the recalibration process impractical. In contrast, cross-calibration methods based on natural scenes only necessitate contemporaneous and co-located calibrated satellite data to recalibrate historical datasets. However, existing cross-calibration methods for historical data recalibration typically utilize data from a single SAR sensor. This approach inadequately corrects system errors within the SAR sensor, resulting in low calibration accuracy. To address this issue, this paper proposes a radiometric recalibration method for historical SAR data based on inter-satellite data alignment. Initially, suitable data from different SAR satellite sensors operating in the same frequency band are selected. Subsequently, a resampling method is employed to construct cross-calibration data pairs with consistent resolution. Finally, the recalibration coefficients are fitted using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to mitigate the impact of anomalous interference values. Experiment results on Sentinel-1A and GF-3A data demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared to traditional fitting methods, the proposed method reduced calibration errors in saline-alkali and bare land areas by 0.82 dB and 0.77 dB, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

Accelerated glacier mass loss in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau since the 1970s

The southeastern Tibetan Plateau(SETP)is a region in High Mountain Asia with the most serious glacier mass ***,long-term and large regional-scale studies that estimate glacier mass balance in this area remain *** this study,we generated a KH-9 Digital Elevation Model(DEM)(covering 87.6%of the glacier area)for the 1970s from KH-9 Hexagon imagery and quantified geodetic glacier mass over the SETP from the 1970s to 2020 using KH-9 DEM,NASADEM and ICESat-2 ATL06 *** results show that the SETP was in a state of serious mass loss(at a rate of−0.35±0.03 m *** year)from the 1970s to 2020,and the rate of mass loss accelerated from−0.15±0.05 to−0.56±0.10 m *** year between the 1970s–2000 and 2000–*** the SETP,the glacier mass balance revealed a remarkable spatial *** maximum mean glacier mass loss rate was observed in the Hengduan *** exhibited the highest acceleration in the mass loss rate since the *** warming of air temperature and decreasing snowfall can partly explain the accelerated glacier mass loss in the *** study provides a new long-term glacier mass balance estimation covering almost the entire SETP that suggests the acceleration in glacier mass loss observed in the SETP since the 1970s is a regional tendency,which is crucial for understanding the relationship between glaciers and climate changes.

Arctic sea ice volume export through the Fram Strait: variation and its effect factors

Arctic sea ice export is important for the redistribution of freshwater and sea ice ***,we use the sea ice thickness,sea ice velocity,and sea ice concentration(SIC)to estimate the exported sea ice volume through the Fram Strait from 2011 to *** further analyse the contributions of the sea ice thickness,velocity and concentration to sea ice volume ***,the relationships between atmospheric circulation indices(Arctic Oscillation(AO),North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO),and Arctic Dipole(AD))and the sea ice volume export are ***,we analyse the impact of wind-driven oceanic circulation indices(Ekman transport(ET))on the sea ice volume *** sea ice volume export rapidly increases in winter and decreases in *** exported sea ice volume in winter is likely to exceed that in spring in the *** sea ice thickness,velocity and SIC,the greatest contribution to sea ice export comes from the ice *** exported sea ice volume through the zonal gate of the Fram Strait(which contributes 97%to the total sea ice volume export of the Fram Strait)is much higher than that through the meridional gate(3%)because the sea ice flowing out of the zonal gate has the characteristics of a high thickness(mainly thicker than 1 m),a high velocity(mainly faster than 0.06 m/s)and a high concentration(mainly higher than 80%).The AD and ET explain 53.86%and 38.37%of the variation in sea ice volume export,respectively.

Gravity anomalies determined from mean sea surface model data over the Gulf of Mexico

With the improvements in the density and quality of satellite altimetry data,a high-precision and high-resolution mean sea surface model containing abundant information regarding a marine gravity field can be calculated from long-time series multi-satellite altimeter ***,in this study,a method was proposed for determining marine gravity anomalies from a mean sea surface *** the Gulf of Mexico(15°–32°N,80°–100°W)as the study area and using a removal-recovery method,the residual gridded deflections of the vertical(DOVs)are calculated by combining the mean sea surface,mean dynamic topography,and XGM2019e_2159 geoid,and then using the inverse Vening-Meinesz method to determine the residual marine gravity anomalies from the residual gridded ***,residual gravity anomalies are added to the XGM2019e_2159 gravity anomalies to derive marine gravity anomaly *** this study,the marine gravity anomalies were estimated with mean sea surface models CNES_CLS15MSS,DTU21MSS,and SDUST2020MSS and the mean dynamic topography models CNES_CLS18MDT and *** accuracy of the marine gravity anomalies derived by the mean sea surface model was assessed based on ship-borne gravity *** results show that the difference between the gravity anomalies derived by DTU21MSS and CNES_CLS18MDT and those of the ship-borne gravity data is *** an increase in the distance from the coast,the difference between the gravity anomalies derived by mean sea surface models and ship-borne gravity data gradually *** accuracy of the difference between the gravity anomalies derived by mean sea surface models and those from ship-borne gravity data are optimal at a depth of 3–4 *** accuracy of the gravity anomalies derived by the mean sea surface model is high.

Enhancing the tensile properties of laser repairing Ti-6Al-4V alloys:Optimization of strain distribution based on composition fine-turning

In the context of laser repairing damaged forging titanium(Ti)alloys,a common challenge is the sig-nificant reduction in elongation of the repaired samples compared to that of the *** this work,directed energy deposition(DED)technology was employed to repair the TC4(Ti-6Al-4V)forgings by ma-nipulating the Al and V contents of the repaired zone(RZ).Subsequent evaluation encompassed the mi-crostructure,microhardness,and tensile properties across the laser repair deposition samples(LRDs).The results revealed that despite the LRD TC4-0Ti’s strength reaching 97.80%of the substrate,its elongation is only 43.93%of the *** appropriately reducing the Al and V contents of RZ,the LRD TC4-5Ti demonstrates a strength of 935.04 MPa and an elongation of 14.59%,achieving 98.70%and 82.38%of the substrate,*** the Al and V contents of RZ are further decreased,the strength of the LRDs gradually diminishes,falling below the forging *** digital image correlation(DIC)technology,the deformation behavior of different zones during the tensile process of these LDRs was *** results indicated a concentration of strain distribution within either RZ or the substrate zone(SZ)of the LRDs during the tensile process,which signifies the mismatch of deformation capacity between these two ***,the tensile properties of the LRDs were adversely *** judiciously adjusting the Al and V contents of RZ,the abovementioned mismatch phenomenon can be ameliorated,which facilitates a synergistic strain behavior between SZ and RZ during the tensile process,aiding in the homogenization of strain distribution and consequently enhancing the tensile properties of the LRDs.

In 2022, there are 1,524 flood events out of a total of 3,531 disasters occurring in Indonesia. East Kalimantan Province ranked 20th among the 35 provinces in Indonesia with 28 flood occurrences in 2022, resulting in two fatalities. This highlights the urgent need for addressing flood hazard to prevent future casualties. There are some methods that can be used to determine the flood hazard in a region. In this research aims to identify flood-prone areas in East Kalimantan Province and evaluate the effectiveness of different mapping methods. The methodology that compares are the Pairwise Comparison method and Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI). The study's results provide flood-prone area maps of East Kalimantan Province using both methods, recommend the more efficient method for flood-prone area identification, and offer mitigation strategies based on the findings. This research is intended to serve as a reference for selecting the best method for identifying flood-prone areas and for informing policy decisions to mitigate flood impacts in East Kalimantan Province. © Author(s) 2025.

According to General Relativity Theory(GRT),by comparing the frequencies between two precise clocks at two different stations,the gravity potential(geopotential)difference between the two stations can be determined due to the gravity frequency shift ***,we conduct a clock-transportation experiment for measuring geopotential differ-ences based on frequency comparisons via satellite links between two remote hydrogen atomic *** on the net frequency shift between the two clocks in two different periods,the geopotential difference between stations of the Beijing 203 Institute Laboratory(BIL)and Luojiashan Time-frequency Station(LTS)is *** show that the experimental result deviated from the reference of Earth gravity model EGM2008 result by(38.5±45.9)m in Orthometric Height(OH).The results are consistent with the frequency stabilities of the hydrogen clocks(at the level of 10-15)used in the *** the rapid development of time and frequency science and technology,the approach discussed in this study for measuring the geopotential is prospective and thus,could have broad applications.
