Typhoons pose significant threats to coastal and inland regions,with their impacts exacerbated by climate change and population growth[1].Recent studies have shown increased frequency of powerful storms,slower translation speeds,northward shifts in the Western North Pacific(WNP)basin,and a near tripling of global exposure to typhoons since 1970[1-4].These changes present new challenges for forecasters and researchers,particularly in predicting impacts on inland and high-latitude populations lacking prior exposure or resilience to typhoon effects.

Dear Editor,Electric vehicle(EV)sales have significantly grown over the years to fulfill growing demands for economic travel and greenhouse gas mitigation.1 However,the surge in the number of EVs has led to charging anxiety as users struggle to find an available charging station before running out of electricity,resulting in longer reserve and waiting times.2 Moreover,severe mobility restrictions caused by infectious diseases,such as coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),have greatly affected people’s travel behavior3,4 and hindered their willingness to use EVs,given that charging in public spaces consumes time and increases the risk of contracting the virus.5 This implies that in the postpandemic era,in which individuals coexist with the virus,the interplay between the two important trends,namely vehicle electrification and mobility restrictions,can extensively affect people’s daily commuting by using EVs.

In spite of being known as a cleaner source of energy, large hydropower reservoirs are found that they emit a considerable amount of GHGs. Quantifying and mitigating the impact of GHGs are essential as they contribute to global warming. Cloud-based tools like GEE and G-res, Earth Observation Data, and in-situ reservoir water level have been used to quantify methane (CH4) emissions from Maithon reservoir, Jharkhand, India. Mitigation techniques and developing an alternative energy source from the emission were also discussed. Initial analysis showed that a 30 cm increment in operating level could reduce CH4 degassing emissions by 5.87±1.43%. The present workflow can be used for preparing emission baselines from large reservoirs to strengthen hydropower policy to accomplish the SDGs. © 2023 IEEE.

Synthetic aperture radar(SAR)records important information about the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the Earth’s ***,long-term and high-resolution backscatter coefficient data are still lacking in many urban studies(e.g.,building height estimation).Here,we proposed a framework to reconstruct the 1-km backscatter coefficient in 1990-2022 utilizing the Sentinel-1 Ground Range Detected data and Landsat time series data in the Jing-Jin-Ji(JJJ)***,we developed a regression model to convert the optical signals from Landsat into backscatter coefficients as the Sentinel-1 data,using observations from 2015 to ***,we reconstructed backscatter coefficients from 1990 to 2022 using the long-term Landsat *** the reconstructed backscatter coefficients,we analyzed the dynamic patterns of building height over the past *** proposed approach performs well on estimating the backscatter coefficient and its spatial pattern,with the annual mean absolute error,root mean square error,and R^(2) of 1.10 dB,1.50 dB,and 0.64,*** temporal trends revealed from the reconstructed backscatter data are reliable compared with satellite observations at a relatively coarse resolution,with Pearson’s coefficients above 0.92 in 6 sample *** derived building height from the reconstructed SAR data indicates that the JJJ region experienced a noticeable upward expansion in 1990-2022,e.g.,Beijing has the fastest growth rate of 0.420 km^(3)/decade regarding the total building *** proposed framework of reconstructing SAR data from optical satellite images provides a new insight to complement the long-term and high-resolution backscatter from local to global scales.

A FIR flter assisted with the predictive model and ELM integrated for UWB-based quadrotor aircraft localization

To improve the accuracy of the Ultra-Wide Band(UWB)based quadrotor aircraft localization,a Finite Impulse Response(FIR)flter aided with an integration of the predictive model and Extreme Learning Machine(ELM)is proposed in this *** FIR flter estimates the quad-rotor aircraft’s position by fusing the positions measured with the UWB and Inertial Navigation System *** the UWB dada are unavailable,both the ELM and the predictive model are used to provide the measurements,replacing those unavailable UWB data,for the FIR *** ELM estimates the measurement via the mapping between the one step prediction of state vector and the measurement built when the UWB data are *** the predictive model,we mathematically describe the missing UWB ***,both the measurements estimated with the ELM and predictive model are employed to estimate the observations via Mahalanobis *** test results show that the FIR flter aided by the predictive model/ELM integrated can reduce the Cumulative Distribution Function and position Root Mean Square Error efectively when the UWB is *** with the ELM assisted FIR flter,the proposed FIR flter can reduce the localization error by about 48.59%,meanwhile,the integrated method is close to the method with a better solution.

This project intends to integrate SegNet and conditional random field to study SegNet-based cloud detection technology, so as to solve the problems such as noise sensitivity and inaccurate contour extraction of existing cloud detection algorithms. An image cloud recognition method based on multi-view images is proposed. This method is used to improve the image characteristics and algorithm robustness of the cloud cluster to be detected. This method has high accuracy on the premise that the cloud boundary is kept well. The experimental results show that the deep learning network is used for remote sensing target detection, which has good accuracy and robustness, thus providing diversified technical support for the application of domestic high-resolution remote sensing satellites. © 2023 IEEE.

The Jvhugeng mining area in the Muli Coal field is situated in the high and cold region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Years of open-pit coal mining have resulted in severe damage to the surrounding ecological environment. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct mine environmental restoration and treatment in order to achieve the goal of ecological environmental protection. To ensure the safe and efficient implementation of subsequent mine environmental restoration and treatment projects, it is essential to accurately and efficiently identify the geological environmental issues and establish clear restoration and treatment goals. Considering the unique natural conditions and geological environment of the plateau alpine mining area, multi-source technologies, such as satellite remote sensing and UAV remote sensing, are employed as the core components. These technologies are complemented by conventional geological surveying and sampling, as well as testing methods. By fully utilizing the technical characteristics of multi-spectral, INSAR, thermal infrared, and other remote sensing technologies, the identification and monitoring of geological hazards, vegetation destruction, water distribution, abnormally high temperature of residual coal on the surface, and soil control in the Jvhugeng mining area have been undertaken. The overall results of the identification process have been positive, providing a scientific basis for mine environmental restoration and control. This achievement holds great significance in ensuring the safe and efficient development of mine restoration and control projects, as well as achieving the desired effects of ecological restoration and control. © 2023 SPIE.

RefComp: A Reference-guided Unified Framework for Unpaired Point Cloud Completion

The unpaired point cloud completion task aims to complete a partial point cloud by using models trained with no ground truth. Existing unpaired point cloud completion methods are class-aware, i.e., a separate model is needed for each object class. Since they have limited generalization capabilities, these methods perform poorly in real-world scenarios when confronted with a wide range of point clouds of generic 3D objects. In this paper, we propose a novel unpaired point cloud completion framework, namely the Reference-guided Completion (RefComp) framework, which attains strong performance in both the class-aware and class-agnostic training settings. The RefComp framework transforms the unpaired completion problem into a shape translation problem, which is solved in the latent feature space of the partial point clouds. To this end, we introduce the use of partial-complete point cloud pairs, which are retrieved by using the partial point cloud to be completed as a template. These point cloud pairs are used as reference data to guide the completion process. Our RefComp framework uses a reference branch and a target branch with shared parameters for shape fusion and shape translation via a Latent Shape Fusion Module (LSFM) to enhance the structural features along the completion pipeline. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the RefComp framework achieves not only state-of-the-art performance in the class-aware training setting but also competitive results in the class-agnostic training setting on both virtual scans and real-world datasets. A broadband microstrip phased array antenna fed by L-shaped probe coupling is designed. In order to achieve broadband and further improve the radiation efficiency of the antenna, the antenna unit adopts the aperture-coupled microstrip patch with multilayer structure, and fed by Radio Frequency orthogonal transformation from coaxial line to microstrip line. At the same time, an 8×8 microstrip antenna array is simulated and designed as the antenna unit. The simulation results show that this antenna has the following performance: in the range of ±60° scanning, the bandwidth of VSWR less than 2.5 of the unit in the array is more than 27.3%;the half-power beam width of the E-plane unit is more than 90°, and the half-power beam width of the H-plane unit is about 100°. © 2021 IEEE.

Monitoring of the Groundwater Level using GRACE with GLDAS Satellite Data in Ganga Plain, India to Understand the Challenges of Groundwater, Depletion, Problems, and Strategies for Mitigation

A sub-surface hydrogeological investigation conducted in the Gangetic Plain of India would involve studying the groundwater resources, aquifer characteristics, and overall hydrogeological conditions in the region. The Gangetic Plain is a vast alluvial plain formed by the sediments deposited by the Ganges and its tributaries, making it a significant groundwater (GW) bearing region, which is surrounded by a thick stratum of unconsolidated Alluvial deposits and comprises rich aquifer systems. This study describes a procedure for estimation of the subsurface GW levels for pre-monsoon, 2021 which has been determined by JPL, RL05, temporal datasets of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS). The water level observed ranged from 2.3 m to 13 m in the Bhabhar and Terai Belt, 14 to 23 m in the Central Alluvial Plain and Khadar Belt, and 24 m to 31 m in the Marginal Alluvial Plain. Two types of variation are seen: local and geological variation. The GW storage justifies the remote sensing perspective and further validates our research study that regional terristrial water storage mapping can be expeditiously and accurately cognizable by the GRACE/GLDAS mission. This method is used to estimate changes in regional GW, it is a very accurate and time-limited method rather than the traditional method of GW estimation. The use of this technology will help in knowing the discharge status of GW in the state and make policies for its over-exploitation. Drinking water can be conserved to a great extent and monitoring of GW can also be done in the time frame. And attention can be given to those districts where water is being exploited more. In view of the increasing impact of climate change on water resources, this modeling will prove vital for understanding future scenarios and planning sustainable management strategies that will aid in the development of adaptation and mitigation measures. © 2024
