Inverse Ising inference allows pairwise interactions of complex binary systems to be reconstructed from empirical correlations. Typical estimators used for this inference, such as Pseudo-likelihood maximization (PLM), are biased. Using the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model as a benchmark, we show that these biases are large in critical regimes close to phase boundaries, and may alter the qualitative interpretation of the inferred model. In particular, we show that the small-sample bias causes models inferred through PLM to appear closer-to-criticality than one would expect from the data. Data-driven methods to correct this bias are explored and applied to a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) dataset from neuroscience. The increasing environmental concerns over and demand for sustainable solutions have driven research into the efficient recovery and reuse of waste materials, particularly from photocatalysts used in wastewater treatment. This study addresses the critical challenge posed by used PVDF/TiO2 photocatalysts, which, if not properly managed, contribute to environmental pollution. A practical recovery technique based on the phase inversion method was developed to separate and purify PVDF, TiO2, and the solvent NMP from used composite materials. This method led to recovery rates of 95.17% for PVDF, 98.35% for NMP, and 67% for TiO2. The recycled photocatalyst was then reassembled and tested for its ability to degrade methylene blue, a common dye pollutant. A Box–Behnken design was employed to optimize the treatment conditions, ensuring the process was both efficient and reproducible. The regenerated material achieved up to 99.6% efficiency in the first cycle, with a slight reduction in efficiency observed across subsequent cycles, maintaining over 92% efficiency after 10 cycles. These findings confirm that effective recovery of photocatalytic materials is not only feasible but also beneficial in reducing waste and maintaining high treatment performance.

While machine learning (ML) models for crop recommendation have demonstrated high predictive accuracy, a critical gap persists in their practical reliability: the omission of uncertainty quantification. Existing studies predominantly deliver deterministic recommendations, neglecting inherent uncertainties arising from data noise. This raises concerns about the reliability of the decision support systems for crop recommendation. To address this, we propose an ensemble ML framework incorporating entropy-based uncertainty quantification. Trained on a publicly available Indian agricultural dataset with 2200 samples across seven agro-climatic features (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, temperature, humidity, pH, and rainfall) and 22 crop classes, the model achieves a predictive accuracy of 99.54 %. By estimating prediction confidence using entropy, the framework offers probabilistic recommendations that support environmentally informed decision-making under uncertainty. These findings suggest that integrating uncertainty measures into ML-driven crop recommendation systems can enhance reliability and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

The increasing demand for sustainable materials has highlighted nanocellulose as a promising candidate due to its exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and superior barrier properties. These attributes enable its application in diverse fields, including packaging, biomedical devices, and nanocomposites. This study investigates the valorization of edamame bean husks, a byproduct of the globally consumed legume snack, as a sustainable feedstock for nanocellulose production. Cellulose was extracted from the husks via delignification and bleaching, followed by a green and facile acid hydrolysis method employing organic acids (maleic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and formic acid) to produce nanocellulose. The resulting nanocellulose exhibited a fibrillar morphology with particle sizes ranging from 7.59 to 17.51 nm, depending on the acid used. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a crystallinity index ranging from 63.49 % to 67.24 %. Notably, acid hydrolysis significantly enhanced the thermal stability of the nanocellulose compared to both the raw husk and isolated cellulose. These findings demonstrate the potential of edamame agricultural waste as a valuable resource for sustainable and eco-friendly nanocellulose production, contributing to a circular bioeconomy. © 2025 The Authors

Dynamic processes on networks, be it information transfer in the Internet, contagious spreading in a social network, or neural signaling, take place along shortest or nearly shortest paths. Unfortunately, our maps of most large networks are substantially incomplete due to either the highly dynamic nature of networks, or high cost of network measurements, or both, rendering traditional path finding methods inefficient. We find that shortest paths in large real networks, such as the network of protein-protein interactions (PPI) and the Internet at the autonomous system (AS) level, are not random but are organized according to latent-geometric rules. If nodes of these networks are mapped to points in latent hyperbolic spaces, shortest paths in them align along geodesic curves connecting endpoint nodes. We find that this alignment is sufficiently strong to allow for the identification of shortest path nodes even in the case of substantially incomplete networks. We demonstrate the utility of latent-geometric path finding in problems of cellular pathway reconstruction and communication security. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Biodiesel represents a renewable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, offering notable environmental advantages such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower toxicity, and biodegradability. However, its conventional production, primarily via the transesterification of vegetable oils or animal fats, faces considerable challenges, including high production costs, limited feedstock availability, energy intensive processes, and competition with food resources, all of which impede its large-scale implementation. This review critically evaluates the potential of emerging non-conventional feedstocks and production methods to address these limitations and enhance the overall feasibility of biodiesel. Alternative feedstocks such as waste cooking oil, lignocellulosic biomass, and microalgae are highlighted for their abundance, cost effectiveness, and minimal competition with food production, with microalgae particularly notable due to their rapid growth and high lipid content, making them a promising third generation source. Concurrently, advanced production technologies including enzymatic catalysis, supercritical fluids, microwave-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, and photothermal transesterification are examined for their capacity to increase reaction efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and process low quality feedstocks. Noteworthy advancements, such as microwave assisted systems that reduce reaction time by over 99 % and achieve biodiesel yields exceeding 96 % under ambient conditions, underscore the potential for industrial scale application. By comparing conventional and non-conventional approaches, this review underscores the pivotal role of innovation in overcoming technical and economic barriers, offering a comprehensive synthesis of recent developments to inform future research, industrial practices, and policy initiatives aimed at fostering a more sustainable biodiesel industry.

Critical pore radius and transport properties of disordered hard- and overlapping-sphere models

Transport properties of porous media are intimately linked to their pore-space microstructures. We quantify geometrical and topological descriptors of the pore space of certain disordered and ordered distributions of spheres, including pore-size functions and the critical pore radius δc. We focus on models of porous media derived from maximally random jammed sphere packings, overlapping spheres, equilibrium hard spheres, quantizer sphere packings, and crystalline sphere packings. For precise estimates of the percolation thresholds, we use a strict relation of the void percolation around sphere configurations to weighted bond percolation on the corresponding Voronoi networks. We use the Newman-Ziff algorithm to determine the percolation threshold using universal properties of the cluster size distribution. The critical pore radius δc is often used as the key characteristic length scale that determines the fluid permeability k. A recent study [Torquato, Adv. Wat. Resour. 140, 103565 (2020)] suggested for porous media with a well-connected pore space an alternative estimate of k based on the second moment of the pore size 〈δ2〉, which is easier to determine than δc. Here, we compare δc to the second moment of the pore size 〈δ2〉, and indeed confirm that, for all porosities and all models considered, δc2 is to a good approximation proportional to 〈δ2〉. However, unlike 〈δ2〉, the permeability estimate based on δc2 does not predict the correct ranking of k for our models. Thus, we confirm 〈δ2〉 to be a promising candidate for convenient and reliable estimates of the fluid permeability for porous media with a well-connected pore space. Moreover, we compare the fluid permeability of our models with varying degrees of order, as measured by the τ order metric. We find that (effectively) hyperuniform models tend to have lower values of k than their nonhyperuniform counterparts.
