This paper explores the development of and pilot study done on an online textbook and research tool, based on the book, "how to model it", by Starfield, Smith and Bleloch. In many engineering design texts, the solution(s) to design problems are provided in the pages following the proposed problem. With this online system, students are able to read only a portion of the text, and then must complete one or more tasks for which they submit a response to the system. This approach forces the students to begin practicing the engineering design process, rather than simply reading about someone else's design process. As a research tool, the computerized method of data gathering addresses the issue of increasing sampling frequency without much larger investment in research time, as no transcription is required. The small pilot study showed students' responses included data on their design process thinking as well as their proposed solution to the problems

Fully polarimetric radar systems are capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving in two orthogonal polarizations. Instantaneous radar polarimetry exploits both polarization modes of a dually-polarized radar transmitter and receiver on a pulse by pulse basis, and can improve the radar detection performance and suppress range sidelobes . In this paper, we extend the use of instantaneous radar polarimetry for radar systems with multiple dually-polarized transmit and receive antennas. Alamouti signal processing is used to coordinate transmission of Golay pairs of phase codes waveforms across polarizations and multiple antennas. The integration of multi- antenna signal processing with instantaneous radar polarimetry can further improve the detection performance, at a computational cost comparable to single channel matched filtering.

Real collective density variables C(k) [cf. Eq. (1.3)] in many-particle systems arise from nonlinear transformations of particle positions, and determine the structure factor S(k), where k denotes the wave vector. Our objective is to prescribe C(k) and then to find many-particle configurations that correspond to such a target C(k) using a numerical optimization technique. Numerical results reported here extend earlier one- and two-dimensional studies to include three dimensions. In addition, they demonstrate the capacity to control S(k) in the neighborhood of ∣k∣=0. The optimization method employed generates multiparticle configurations for which S(k)∝∣k∣α, ∣k∣⩽K, and α=1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. The case α=1 is relevant for the Harrison-Zeldovich model of the early universe, for superfluid He4, and for jammed amorphous sphere packings. The analysis also provides specific examples of interaction potentials whose classical ground states are configurationally degenerate and disordered.

The MVDR beamformer is the most extensively used array processing algorithm and involves inverting the sample covariance matrix. In the snapshot deficient scenario, when the number of sensors is greater than or approximately equal to the number of snapshots, the eigenvalues of the resulting sample covariance matrix are poorly conditioned. Diagonal loading is then applied to the sample covariance matrix. Expressions for the bias of the resulting MVDR beamformer outputs in the sidelobe region are presented that are exact for asymptotically large arrays. Numerical simulations confirm the accuracy of these asymptotic expressions when predicting the bias of the outputs of moderately large arrays. © 2005 IEEE.

A pair of initial studies using an evolutionary approach to curricular reform that capitalize on the strength of both the top-down and bottom-up model, and was built on the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) reform literature are performed. This approach develop a pairwise linkage among strategic courses in the engineering curricula to promote curricular integration. The results of trial produced higher course grades in both course grades in both courses, though the change was most significant for the mechanical engineering course. Full evaluation of the project cannot be obtained until the study is continued to include statics students who also participated when they were enrolled in the computer science course.

Recent simulations indicate that ellipsoids can pack randomly more densely than spheres and, remarkably, for axes ratios near 1.25∶1∶0.8 can approach the densest crystal packing (fcc) of spheres, with a packing fraction of 74%. We demonstrate that such dense packings are realizable. We introduce a novel way of determining packing density for a finite sample that minimizes surface effects. We have fabricated ellipsoids and show that, in a sphere, the radial packing fraction ϕ(r) can be obtained from V(h), the volume of added fluid to fill the sphere to height h. We also obtain ϕ(r) from a magnetic resonance imaging scan. The measurements of the overall density ϕavr, ϕ(r) and the core density ϕ0=0.74±0.005 agree with simulations.

In this paper, we consider a ranging procedure occurred in the fixed and mobile broadband wireless access systems based on the Wireless MAN-OFDMA (Metropolitan Area Network -Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access). A ranging procedure is a collection of processes for a Mobile Subscriber Station (MSS) and a Base Station (BS) to maintain the quality of the radio frequency communication link between them. When multiple subscribers select the same ranging codes from the given ranging code pool and range the BS by transmitting those identical ranging codes at the same time frame, the ranging collision may be occurred at BS because the BS can not differentiate two different MSSs since they selected the same ranging code. We propose a mathematical performance model to analyze the probability of ranging collision affected by both the capacity of the ranging code pool and the rate of the MSS arriving to the system and investigate the numerical results of the proposed model. By the proposed model and its numerical results, we can calculate the minimum number of the required ranging codes to be implemented in BS(Base Station). We compare the analytical results with the simulated results to validate the proposed mathematical model is correct.

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.
