Development and verification of the higher-order mode neutron flux calculation code HARMONY2.0

Higher-order modes of the neutron diffusion/transport equation can be used to study the temporal behavior of nuclear reactors and can be applied in modal analysis, transient analysis, and online monitoring of the reactor core. Both the deterministic method and the Monte Carlo(MC) method can be used to solve the higher-order modes. However, MC method, compared to the deterministic method, faces challenges in terms of computational efficiency and α mode calculation stability, whereas the deterministic method encounters issues arising from homogenization-related geometric and energy spectra *** on the higher-order mode diffusion calculation code HARMONY, we developed a new higher-order mode calculation code, HARMONY2.0, which retains the functionality of computing λ and α higher-order modes from HARMONY1.0, but enhances the ability to treat complex geometries and arbitrary energy spectra using the MC-deterministic hybrid two-step strategy. In HARMONY2.0, the mesh homogenized multigroup constants were obtained using OpenMC in the first step,and higher-order modes were then calculated with the mesh homogenized core diffusion model using the implicitly restarted Arnoldi method(IRAM), which was also adopted in the HARMONY1.0 code. In addition, to improve the calculation efficiency, particularly in large higher-order modes, event-driven parallelization/domain decomposition methods are embedded in the HARMONY2.0 code to accelerate the inner iteration of λ∕α mode using OpenMP. Furthermore, the higher-order modes of complex geometric models, such as Hoogenboom and ATR reactors for λ mode and the MUSE-4 experiment facility for the prompt α mode, were computed using diffusion theory.

In this work, an evaluation towards influence of high-dose gamma irradiation on surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators, is reported. The single-port SAW resonators are fabricated using Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) and Catangasite (CTGS, Ca3TaGa3Si2O14) substrates, along respective cut directions of (0º, 38º, 0º) and (0º, 90º, 0º). Piezoelectric coefficient of substrates, and several main resonance parameters covering resonance frequency, amplitude of resonance peak in reflection coefficient, quality factor together with electromechanical coupling factor of manufactured SAW resonators are investigated, as suitable representatives of piezoelectric and resonance characteristics of SAW resonators. After exposure to gamma ray with a maximum dose of 250 kGy, substrates show insignificant variation not exceeding 6% in their piezoelectric coefficient. Meanwhile, resonance parameters of SAW resonators also alter slightly. Such excellent stability of these characteristics demonstrates credible irradiation hardness owned by both SAW resonators. Results in this study can provide supportive references for usage of LiNbO3 and CTGS-based SAW devices in harsh environments. © 2025 SPIE.

The existing drive method of the main equipment transporter of the nuclear island makes the transporter have frequent jamming problems when the transporter going straight and turning, which affects the safety during the transporter of the main equipment. Therefore, it is necessary to design an on-board multi-motor synchronous system with differential synchronization function. Although the traditional virtual line-shafting structure has the ability of same-speed synchronization and differential synchronization, there is a large synchronization error. For this reason, this paper proposes a multi-motor synchronous control method based on the improved virtual line-shafting structure, which can effectively solve the inherent synchronous delay problem of the virtual line-shafting. First, analyze and research the combination method of virtual line-shafting structure and deviation coupling structure, and designs the electronic differential to be able to adapt to the requirements of same-speed and differential synchronization. Then the influence of virtual line-shafting parameters on the system is analyzed using the root locus method, and a simplified parameter model of the virtual line-shafting is established, on the basis of which an improved virtual line-shafting control method with low synchronous delay is proposed. The results show that this method can significantly reduce the synchronization error compared with the traditional virtual line-shafting. © Beijing Paike Culture Commu. Co., Ltd. 2025.

A numerical method to predict the bursting strength of filament wound composite rocket motor case is proposed *** method can evaluate the longitudinal stress evolution of each composite layer as impregnated filaments with fiber tension are wound layer by layer,and consider the effects of accumulated stress and deformation during filament winding on the bursting strength of composite ***∅520 mm composite cases as a case study,the filament-winding-process-induced stress and deformation as well as progressive damage behavior are numerically predicted,followed by a comparison with experimental *** numerical results show that the predicted bursting pressures for composite cases manufactured on the mandrels with and without a flexible component are 14.20 MPa and 21.40 MPa,*** values exhibit slight deviation from the measured pressures of 13.50 MPa and 21.57 ***,the predicted damage locations,situated respectively in the dome and cylinder,agree well with the experimental *** observations indicate that use of flexible component reduces the load-bearing capacity of the ***,it validates the reliability and accuracy of the proposed numerical method in predicting the bursting strength of composite cases.

Experimental Study on Geometry Characteristics of Turbulent Premixed Flames for Natural Gas/Air Mixtures

In this study,focusing on the geometry characteristics of spherical expanding flame,the turbulent premixed flames of natural gas/air mixtures were investigated in a fan-stirred turbulent *** effects of initial temperature(T=300-400 K),initial pressure(P=0.1-0.3 MPa),turbulence intensity(u'=1.0-2.7 m/s),oxygen volumetric percentage(φ(O_(2))=15%-21%)and carbon dioxide volumetric percentage(φ(CO_(2))=0-20%)were delved *** flame profile under the Cartesian coordinate system was derived from the schlieren images taken by the high-speed ***,from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives,the influence of experimental conditions on the flame geometry characteristics was explored through flame front extraction,wavelet decomposition and network *** results demonstrate that for significant flame wrinkling,changes in species concentrations and turbulence intensity have more pronounced effects on the flame wrinkling *** wrinkling of the flame front maintains a certain degree of similarity,as evidenced by the locally concentrated distribution of the angles of the maximum fluctuation *** disturbance energy under large-scale(D6-D8)disturbances exhibits relatively high values with a similar trend,exerting a significant impact on the geometry characteristics of the flame *** peaks of correlation degree are scattered either with the decomposition scale or the development of flame radius,indicating no linear correlation between different detail ***,the probability distribution of node degrees in key wrinkled regions exhibits different trends with that of large-scale wrinkling and disturbance energy,especially with changes in initial *** occurs because the number of key wrinkles varies based on the perturbation's strength or the region's ***,an increase in the fluctuation frequency of the flame's local radius may not necessarily lead to an increase in the number of key folded regions.

Improving the ductility of laser directed energy deposited borated stainless steel by increasing laser power

Borated stainless steels (BSSs) are extensively applied in the nuclear energy industry due to boron's excellent thermal neutron absorption capacity, but large and brittle borides formed during casting result in a low ductility. Here, a BSS was produced by laser directed energy deposition, and an investigation was conducted to analyze the impact of laser power on both the microstructure and mechanical properties of the deposited material. Fibrous borides with relatively low volume fraction in the overlapping zone resulted in higher ductility, while lamellar borides with relatively large volume fraction in the non-overlapping zone led to higher strength. As the laser power increased from 180 W to 330 W, the size of fibrous and lamellar eutectic borides and austenite increased significantly, the width of the soft overlapping zone increased by 2.27 times, and the elongation increased by 2.03 times, although yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decreased by 46.3 % and 31.7 %, respectively. As a result, these findings confirmed the feasibility of significantly improving the ductility of the as-deposited BSS by increasing the laser power. The work here provides a way to tailoring the mechanical properties of BSS produced by laser additive manufacturing. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Relative Localizability and Localization for Multirobot systems

Inter-robot relative positions are crucial for executing various multirobot missions, such as formation maneuvering and collaborative inspection. However, the current sensing technology usually provides part of relative position information, such as inter-robot distances, bearings and angles. This prompts the study of determining inter-robot relative positions, i.e., relative localization, from these partial measurements. Based on the existing results of static networks' localizability and mobile robots' relative localization, we propose a novel concept, relative localizability to describe whether a multirobot system is relatively localizable. Given each robot's self-displacement measurements and inter-robot partial measurements in d (d ≤ 4) sampling instants, we show that a multirobot system's relative localization can be achieved in a purely algebraic and distributed manner, in which the multirobot system is said to be d-step relatively localizable. To make the results more general, we consider that the multirobot system consists of landmarks, leaders, and followers, and that the inter-robot measurements can be distances, bearings or angles. When robots' coordinate frames have different orientations, we show that the given local measurements can be used to determine robots' relative positions and their coordinate frames' relative orientations simultaneously. Simulations and experiments of relative localization for ground robots are conducted to validate the obtained results. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been applied for welding dissimilar materials in advanced manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding, automotive and aerospace. For the broad popularization of adhesive in FSW, the innovative coupling method of friction stir welding-adhesive bonding (FSW-AB) technology was designed to join 5A06 aluminum alloy to 304 stainless steel. The joints were fabricated using a single-component structural adhesive applied manually in the pre-lap zone. The joints were then cured by the heat generated from FSW. Macrostructure, defect generation and tensile shear performances of the joints obtained using three different rotation speeds and different adhesive thickness were studied. The adhesive prevented direct plate contact, but the FSW-AB joint showed more flash. Adhesive expansion occurred on the advancing side due to structural asymmetry and uneven heat dissipation. Compared to conventional FSW, the joints produced by FSW-AB exhibited significantly reduced hook defects in the pin-affected zone, a smoother distribution of hardness across the weld cross-section, and notably elevated hardness on the retreating side of the base metal outside the shoulder. It is attributed to the difference in the degree of crystallization between the two caused by the difference in heat dissipation rate. The ultimate tensile shear load of the FSW-AB joint reached 93.3 % of the conventional FSW joint at 1200 rpm stirring speed and 0.25 mm adhesive thickness. Furthermore, the fracture modes of FSW-AB joints were mainly normal fracture and shear fracture. © 2025 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers

Surface-PMSM Sensorless Control Strategy Based on Reduced-Order Linear Kalman Filter Cooperating with Prediction Error Rolling Compensation

Kalman filter (KF) is increasingly attracted for sensorless control of surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) due to its strong robustness against measurement and system noise. However, conventional method suffers from poor position and speed estimation accuracy under dynamic conditions, and high computational cost. In order to solve these problems, an enhanced sensorless control strategy based on reduced-order linear Kalman filter (RLKF) cooperating with prediction error rolling compensation is introduced in this paper. Differing from conventional method, a reduced-order linear state equation encompassing rotor position, speed and torque disturbance is constructed. Then, by obtaining the prediction error of system output using the motor current equation in the predictive reference frame, the optimal estimation of rotor position and speed in KF algorithm is achieved based on the reduced-order model. This not only simplifies the calculation process, but also enhances the position and speed estimation accuracy under dynamic conditions. Meanwhile, a prediction error rolling compensation algorithm is developed to minimize the estimation deviations caused by motor parameters variations. Additionally, the system's dynamic performance is further improved with an adopted speed controller based on torque disturbance feedforward and acceleration feedback. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed strategy.1 © 1986-2012 IEEE.
