Increasing air temperatures are driving permafrost warming across the Arctic and sub-Arctic. This in turn degrades the geomechanical properties of soils, disrupts the natural environment and infrastructure systems, and results in long-lasting societal impacts. Understanding the thermal state of degrading permafrost in the Arctic is crucial for maintaining resilient infrastructure in the changing Arctic. This study employs Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) to monitor permafrost temperature near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, from 2021 to 2024. Fiber-optic DTS sensors have unique and attractive characteristics that allow their deployment in the Arctic for low-maintenance, cost-effective, and high-resolution data. This paper presents the temperature recordings of a 2-km DTS system on the tundra near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, by the Elson Lagoon. A hysteresis model is developed to link permafrost temperature with air temperature, incorporating meteorological data and ground surface conditions. The study also explores the impact of civil infrastructure on permafrost thermal dynamics. © ASCE.

Social and naturally occurring choice phenomena are often of the “pick-any” type in which the number of choices made by a subject as well as the set of alternatives from which they are chosen is unconstrained. These data present a special analytical problem because the meaning of non-choice among pick-any choice data is always ambiguous: A non-chosen alternative may be either unacceptable, or acceptable but not considered, or acceptable and considered but not chosen. A model and scaling method for these data are introduced, allowing for this ambiguity of non-choice. Subjects are represented as points whose coordinates are proportional to the centroids of the points representing their choices. Alternatives are represented at points whose coordinates are proportional to the centroids of the points representing subjects who have chosen them. In this paper, we propose HiPoNet, an end-to-end differentiable neural network for regression, classification, and representation learning on high-dimensional point clouds. Single-cell data can have high dimensionality exceeding the capabilities of existing methods for point clouds which are tailored for 3D data. Moreover, modern single-cell and spatial experiments now yield entire cohorts of datasets (i.e. one on every patient), necessitating models that can process large, high-dimensional point clouds at scale. Most current approaches build a single nearest-neighbor graph, discarding important geometric information. In contrast, HiPoNet forms higher-order simplicial complexes through learnable feature reweighting, generating multiple data views that disentangle distinct biological processes. It then employs simplicial wavelet transforms to extract multiscale features—capturing both local and global topology. We empirically show that these components preserve topological information in the learned representations, and that HiPoNet significantly outperforms state-of-the-art point-cloud and graph-based models on single cell. We also show an application of HiPoNet on spatial transcriptomics datasets using spatial co-ordinates as one of the views. A convenient way to improve K-12 teachers' understanding of engineering and technology is to use experts in these areas as resources. The Tufts University Student Teacher Outreach Mentorship program (STOMP) model forms collaborations between undergraduate or graduate students and classroom teachers to take advantage of each party's expertise. These undergraduate and graduate students, or STOMP fellows, study science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects at the university level and can be considered experts in these subject areas because of their constant exposure to, and knowledge of these topics. As experts, they share their knowledge with teachers to help teachers build an understanding of, and comfort level with engineering and technology. The end goal of this partnership is to provide a teacher with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to implement an engineering and technology curriculum in their classroom. In this paper we examine teachers' reactions on their participation in STOMP. We specifically look at teacher perceptions of STOMP, experience and comfort level in teaching STEM content, and their shear interest in the STOMP program. We also examine a need and rationale behind a three-phase model in which STOMP has a sustainable impact on a teacher's ability to implement STEM curricula. Results of this study show that STOMP has raised teachers' confidence in teaching and knowledge of engineering and technology content. These results support the use of a three-phase model to create a sustainable program that empowers teachers to gain independence in teaching in these previously unfamiliar content areas. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2010.

Bora geothermal is one of the manifestations that appear at the meeting of two fault zones namely Palu-Koro Fault and Palolo Fault. This geothermal is classified as non-volcanic. Existing tectonic activity, presumably leading to the formation of a depressive zone that triggers a rock intrusion process that conducts heat conductively. To find out the sub-surface structure, we apply the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method. The data collection technique we use is 2-D imaging with Wenner configuration, where the number of electrodes is 21 pieces at 6 m intervals. Shallow depths Penetration targeted about 20 m below ground surface (***. The resistivity values obtained are in the range 56.6 Ohm.m which indicates the subsurface layer is strongly influenced by the fluid. However, the interesting thing here is that the hot water pool formed on the surface of about 6 m dimension is passed through the path of ERT measurement around the electrode number 11 and 12, illustrated in the resistivty section to ± 10 *** depth and turning toward the electrode number 4 up to 7 as the lowest anomaly source at depth > 15 ***. This configuration of low resistivity anomaly is what we interpret as a shallow ground pathway with local high temperatures as the source of the emergence of Bora geothermal manifestations. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Beginning in July 1997, Malaysia had a currency balance deficit above five percent of GDP. Significant shifts in macroeconomic indices, including a fall in the real exchange rate, were closely associated with the currency collapse. This circumstance may lead to a Malaysian currency crisis. These variables must be monitored as the crisis may affect extremely adverse economic circumstances. A model for early currency crisis identification in Malaysia is developed based on the behavior of this indicator. When there is a behavioral crisis, the conditions shift from non-crisis to crisis and the indicator varies. Markov Switching integration into Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (MS-GARCH) models provides a framework for understanding and analyzing the nuances present in a crisis. This integrated method creates a solid foundation for crisis research and provides sophisticated knowledge that surpasses traditional methods. Combining these cutting-edge statistical techniques gives us a more sophisticated grasp of the dynamics of the crisis and enables a more thorough study that surpasses the capabilities of conventional models. By using an integrated strategy, we may better foresee, manage, and lessen the impact of crisis occurrences on financial institutions and markets by utilizing a comprehensive set of instruments to untangle their intricacies. The results show that the smoothed probability value in the MS-GARCH(2,1,1) model can predict the absence of a tendency for a crisis to occur in 2023. © 2024 IEEE.

This study seeks to understand the experiences of women of color engineering students who persist and identify some of the dilemmas they face. Evidence emerged that students formulate multiple identities to help them persist in their engineering programs. We assess the role that identity plays in the experiences of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) women of color. This paper applies a multiple identities framework and presents students' experiences through the lenses of three emergent identities: academic, social, and intellectual. We discuss possible implications of the findings for academic and social support programs in higher education. We also identify some implications for precollege instruction. © 2005 Springer science + Business Media, Inc.

Star networks have been recently proposed as an attractive choice for interconnection networks. They have sublogarithmic node degree and diameter and, like hypercubes, have a highly recursive structure. Several researchers have endeavored to prove that star networks are as versatile as hypercubes. The paper is an effort in the same direction. It presents optimal algorithms for computing disjoint paths in star graphs for two well known paradigms. It also studies the problem of disjoint connecting paths and presents an efficient algorithm for finding a limited number of such paths in the star network. © 1991 IEEE.
