This article proposes a new multi-level inverter (MLI) based on flying capacitor inverter (FCI), with focused on high-precision positioning control for a voice coil motor (VCM). Multi-level inverters (MLIs) have the characteristic that increasing the number of output voltage levels reduces the output voltage error. However, as the number of levels increases, the number of circuit elements increases, and the circuit becomes more complex. In addition, the output voltage amplitude for each level is constant in conventional inverters. As a result, such as high-precision positioning control of VCM, designing an appropriate inverter for a reference wave that contains a large amount of low-voltage components increases the number of circuit elements. Therefore, this paper proposes a MLI with two unbalanced dc-input voltages, referred to as unbalanced MLIs (UMLIs) hereinafter. This topology uses two different dc-input voltages, and it is possible to reduce the output voltage level in extremely low-voltage range compared to other voltage levels. Simulation results when the high-precision positioning control of the VCM confirm that the proposed UMLIs improves the control performance compared to the conventional FCIs with equal number of output voltage levels and uniform level widths. © 2025 IEEE.

Advancing Bankruptcy Forecasting With Hybrid Machine Learning Techniques: Insights From an Unbalanced Polish Dataset

The challenge of bankruptcy prediction, critical for averting financial sector losses, is amplified by the prevalence of imbalanced datasets, which often skew prediction models. Addressing this, our study introduces the innovative hybrid model XGBoost+ANN, designed to leverage the strengths of both ensemble learning and artificial neural networks. This model integrates a comprehensive set of features with parameters optimized through genetic algorithms, eschewing traditional feature selection approaches. Our research focuses on an unbalanced dataset of Polish companies and reveals that the XGBoost+ANN model, in particular, exhibits outstanding performance. Optimized using genetic algorithms and without feature selection, this model achieved the highest AUC (0.958), sensitivity (0.752), and accuracy (0.983) scores, surpassing other models in our study. This remarkable outperformance, along with the robust results, marks a substantial advancement in the field of bankruptcy prediction. It underscores the efficacy of our approach in addressing the persistent challenge of data imbalance, offering a more reliable and accurate solution for financial risk assessment. © 2013 IEEE.

A systematic Literature Review on the Security Attacks and Countermeasures Used in Graphical Passwords

This systematic literature review delves into the dynamic realm of graphical passwords, focusing on the myriad security attacks they face and the diverse countermeasures devised to mitigate these threats. The core objective of this paper is to identify existing security threats to graphical password schemes and the corresponding countermeasures developed to mitigate these attacks. The study process begins by identifying the usable databases and search engines to identify all the relevant resources. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were carefully selected to prioritize the study, focusing mostly on attacks and countermeasures related to graphical password schemes between 2009 and 2023. After thorough identification and selection progress, 59 studies met all the criteria. Among these studies, 47 mentioned shoulder surfing as a threat to graphical password schemes, while 20 discussed brute force attacks. Additionally, there were 21 papers on dictionary attacks, 13 on smudge attacks, spyware attacks, and social engineering, and 19 that discussed guessing attacks as threats to graphical password schemes. Furthermore, the papers identified several other attacks, including frequency of occurrence analysis attacks, video recording, eavesdropping, computer vision, sonar, and image gallery attacks, with the corresponding numbers of papers being 9, 17, 5, 2, 2, and 1, respectively. The results also highlight the countermeasures proposed in the study papers to mitigate the aforementioned attacks. Among the various countermeasures identified, most revolve around randomization, obfuscation, and password space complexity as the most commonly used techniques for enhancing the security of graphical password schemes. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we develop a graph neural network (GNN)-assisted bilinear inference approach to enhance the receiver performance of the MIMO system through message passing-based joint channel estimation and data detection (JCD). Specifically, based on the bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) framework and conditional correlation of signal, we propose a GNN-assisted BiG-AMP (GNN-BiGAMP) approach, which integrates a GNN module into the data-detection-loop to compensate the inaccurate marginal likelihood approximation. By leveraging the coupling between the channel and received symbols, a bilinear GNN-assisted BiG-AMP (BiGNN-BiGAMP) JCD receiver is further proposed. This method incorporates two GNNs with similar graph representation into the bilinear posterior estimation loops, which not only compensates for approximation errors but also alleviates performance loss due to premature variance convergence, thereby enhancing the receiver performance significantly. To fully exploit the supervised information from channel estimation and data detection, we propose a multitask learning based training scheme, which coordinates GNNs with different tasks in two loops. Simulation results show that our proposed GNN-assisted JCD receivers significantly outperform other JCD counterparts in terms of both channel estimation and data detection. © 2025 IEEE. Virtualization enables the service providers (SPs) to logically partition the resources into virtual machines (VM) instances. Real-world SPs such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft Azure, IBM, and Oracle provide different flavors of VM instances, such as on-demand, reserved, and low-cost or spot, depending on the type of application hosted. The on-demand instances are short-term and typically incur a higher cost than reserved instances that are provisioned for a longer duration at a discounted rate. Low-cost or spot instances are cost-effective compared to on-demand but are reclaimable by the SPs. The SPs often claim that the on-demand and spot instances achieve similar performance, but it is far from that. This paper studies the performance of spot instances via rigorous experimentation over commercial SPs such as Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. Real-world evaluations affirm that spot instances perform poorly compared to their on-demand counterpart concerning memory, CPU, disk read, and write operations. We identify such instances as disruptive and name them so because it does not fulfill the performance, durability, and flexibility expectations like an on-demand instance having the same configuration. We also perform hypothesis testing over the experimental data obtained to corroborate our claim further. © 2024 IEEE.

Smoke detection in foggy surveillance environment using parallel vision transformer network

Recent years have seen an unprecedented increase in fire incidents, resulting in severe damage to forest regions, loss of human and animal lives, and unwarranted displacement of people. Owing to these issues, artificial intelligence-based fire detection systems have been developed. These systems mostly work with camera-based inputs for fire detection and alarm generation. As fire-smoke can be seen from a distance, methods for smoke detection have also been deployed for identifying fire incidents. But detecting smoke in an outdoor environment can be challenging due to weather conditions such as haze, fog, or clouds. These challenges have led to advancements in the field, and various deep learning architectures have been suggested over the years for fire-smoke detection in normal and foggy or cloudy weather conditions. Many existing methods are either computationally expensive and demand high memory, or if they are lightweight, they suffer from lower smoke detection accuracy and high false alarms. In the present paper, a dual-channel vision transformer model ‘SmokeViT’ is proposed for detecting fire-smoke in an outdoor environment. These channels are interlaced with a convolutional neural network to improve the feature learning capability of the model. ‘SmokeViT’ shows a remarkable accuracy of more than 99% and false alarm rate below 0.20% on two publicly available smoke datasets, outperforming six state-of-the-art methods. The model architecture has only 0.4 million parameters and 0.17 giga floating-point operations, making it suitable for deployment on resource-constrained surveillance devices. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Farmers’ Policy Identity of the Under-Forest Economy in Jingshan City, China: the Intermediary Effect of Social Trust and Moderating Role of Environmental Cognition

After collective forest tenure reform, the under-forestry economy of China developed very quickly, and achieved certain results experience of under-forest economy at a county level in Jingshan of Hubei Province. This research explores interrelationships among people’s participation in and participation motivation in the forest economy, social trust, and policy propensity, with the goal of understanding people’s relevance toward participation motivation, social trust, and policy tendencies, as well as social trust’s mediating role in participation motivation’s influence on policy identity. The experimental period ran from mid-June to the end of December 2017. The purpose was to determine attitudes of farmers who had not previously taken part in the under-forest economy. Using purposeful sampling, a questionnaire survey was carried out among farmers who add not taken part in the collective forest rights transaction system in 14 districts of Jingshan City, Hubei Province, China, and related data and information were obtained. A regression analysis, and mediation and moderation process analyses were used to study the intermediary effect of social trust and whether there was a moderating intermediary effect under the interference of environmental cognition. The main variables had mutual influences. At the same time, the intermediary effect of social trust and the mediating role of environmental cognition were found to be significant, indicating that the mediating model of regulation was valid. It was found from this study that social trust had a partial influence on farmers’ policy identity, and social trust under the adjustment of environmental cognition affected the choice of identity. Problems of individual cases might also be a blind spot that is often overlooked in under-forest economic policies. Therefore, in the future, social trust can be used as a judgment. Enhanced nitrate removal from groundwater using a conductive spacer in flow-electrode capacitive deionization

Flow-electrode capacitive deionization(FCDI)represents a promising approach for ion separation from aqueous ***,the optimization of spacer,particularly for nitrate-contaminated groundwa-ter systems,has often been *** research comprehensively investigates the influence of using a conductive(carbon cloth,CC)spacer on nitrate removal performance within FCDI system,comparing it to a non-conductive(nylon net,NN)*** both CC and NN FCDI systems,it is unsurprisingly that nitrate removal efficiency improved notably with the increasing current density and hydraulic retention time(HRT).Interestingly,the specific energy consumption(SEC)for nitrate removal did not show obvious fluctuations when the current density and HRT varied in both *** the auspiciously optimized process parameters,CC-FCDI attained a 20%superior nitrate removal efficiency relative to NN-FCDI,ac-companied by a notably diminished SEC for CC-FCDI,registering at a mere 28%of *** great improvement can be primarily attributed to the decrement in FCDI internal resistance after using con-ductive spacer,which further confirmed by electrochemical tests such as linear sweep voltammetry(LSV)and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS).Upon prolonged continuous nitrate removal at the optimized conditions,the CC-FCDI system achieved a consistent 90%nitrate removal efficiency with a low SEC of 2.7-7.8 kWh/kg NO_(3)-N,underscoring its steady ***,this study highlights the pivotal importance of careful spacer design and optimization in realizing energy-efficient groundwater treatment via FCDI.

Three dimensional discrete element modelling of the conventional compression behavior of gas hydrate bearing coal

To analyze the relationship between macro and meso parameters of the gas hydrate bearing coal(GHBC)and to calibrate the meso-parameters,the numerical tests were conducted to simulate the laboratory triaxial compression tests by PFC3D,with the parallel bond model employed as the particle contact constitutive ***,twenty simulation tests were conducted to quantify the relationship between the macro–meso ***,nine orthogonal simulation tests were performed using four meso-mechanical parameters in a three-level to evaluate the sensitivity of the meso-mechanical ***,the calibration method of the meso-parameters were then ***,the contact force chain,the contact force and the contact number were examined to investigate the saturation effect on the meso-mechanical behavior of *** results show that:(1)The elastic modulus linearly increases with the bonding stiffness ratio and the friction coefficient while exponentially increasing with the normal bonding strength and the bonding radius *** failure strength increases exponentially with the increase of the friction coefficient,the normal bonding strength and the bonding radius coefficient,and remains constant with the increase of bond stiffness ratio;(2)The friction coefficient and the bond radius coefficient are most sensitive to the elastic modulus and the failure strength;(3)The number of the force chains,the contact force,and the bond strength between particles will increase with the increase of the hydrate saturation,which leads to the larger failure strength.

Kidney disease (KD) is a gradually increasing global health concern. It is a chronic illness linked to higher rates of morbidity and mortality, a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and numerous other illnesses, and expensive medical expenses. The machine learning (ML) models are applied for KD prediction with higher accuracy and precision. The KD dataset has uncertainty and vague information, so, we used the neutrosophic set (NS) to deal with vague and uncertainty information in the KD dataset. The KD dataset is converted into the N-KD dataset with three membership functions: truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. Three ML models are used in this study such as logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN). These ML models are applied to the N-KD dataset. The results show the LR has higher accuracy and precision on the N-KD dataset than the original KD dataset. © 2025, University of New Mexico. All rights reserved.
