Suppression of Vortex-Induced Vibration Caused by A Terebridae-Inspired Cylinder with Different Helical Angles

Biomimetic design has recently received widespread *** by the Terebridae structure,this paper provides a structural form for suppressing vortex-induced vibration(VIV)*** different structural forms are shown,including the traditional smooth cylinder(P0),and the Terebridae-inspired cylinder with the helical angle of 30°(P_(30)),60°(P_(60)),and 90°(P_(90)).Computational fluid dynamics(CFD)method is adopted to solve the flow pass the Terebridae-inspired structures,and the vibration equation is solved using the Newmark-β*** results show that for P_(30),P_(60) and P_(90),the VIV responses are effectively suppressed in the lock-in region,and P_(60) showed the best VIV suppression *** transverse amplitude and the downstream amplitude can be reduced by 82.67%and 91.43%respectively for P_(60) compared with that for P0,and the peak of the mean-drag coefficient is suppressed by 53.33%.The Q-criterion vortices of P_(30),P_(60),and P_(90) are destroyed,with irregular vortices *** is also found that the boundary layer separation is located on the Terebridae-inspired *** twisted ribs cause the separation point to constantly change along the spanwise direction,resulting in the development of the boundary layer separation being completely *** strength of the wake flow is significantly weakened for the Terebridae-inspired cylinder.

We live in a period where machines have become a fundamental piece of our day-to-day existence. These machines that surround us largely depend on human assistance. To operate them, a human would nearly have to be functional. We only lose the capacity to engage with machines when these capabilities are hindered, possibly by a bodily condition or injury. This study picks the Universal Testing Machine as the machine to be operated to help physically challenged people run machinery. Internet of Things (IoT) systems develop with paramount importance for security in view of the increased deployment of IoT devices over critical sectors like healthcare, industry automation, and smart cities. The risk exposure of such systems is extremely high to potent cyber threats, including those that may result in data integrity and privacy issues and operational unreliability. Security in IoT systems has thus emerged through heterogeneous integration with blockchain and artificial intelligence models. This blockchain technology provides a decentralized, immutable ledger for secure data transactions. AI models, especially those designed by anomaly detection and prediction algorithms, can identify and mitigate cyber threats. In this paper, the authors propose the SecureChainAI model that synergistically integrates artificial intelligence algorithms with blockchain to safeguard IoT environments. The two core building blocks that will make this proposed model real are CaSNet and the EchoChain algorithm. The CaSNet model integrates LSTM, RNN, and GRU techniques with novelty detection for proficient attack prediction and detection using their peculiar capabilities in sequential data handling and the identification of novel attack patterns. The EchoChain algorithm puts blockchain technology into the IoT infrastructure to provide security in communication and integrity of the values. This makes the architecture lightweight, shifting computational loads to the collector node, and hence suitable for IoT devices with low computational resources. Evaluations of the performance necessary to detect different classes of cyberattacks using SecureChainAI have improved on the detection accuracy, precision, recall, f1-score, and reduced error rates. © 2024 IEEE.

The increasing integration of Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) in critical infrastructure presents unique challenges for ensuring robust cybersecurity. Traditional Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) often struggle with the dynamic, complex nature of CPS environments, making adaptive solutions essential. This paper presents an Adaptive Intrusion Detection system (AIDS) that leverages Reinforcement Learning-Based Autoencoders (RL-AE) to detect and respond to cyber intrusions in CPS environments. The proposed model combines the power of autoencoders for unsupervised anomaly detection with reinforcement learning to continuously adapt and improve detection accuracy. Experimental results on benchmark CPS datasets demonstrate that the RL-AE-based IDS achieves a detection accuracy of 98.3%, a precision rate of 96.8%, and a recall rate of 97.5%, effectively minimizing false positives to 2.4%. The system also demonstrated rapid adaptability, with a convergence time of less than 50 iterations in response to new attack patterns. These results highlight the model's ability to enhance system resilience and promote secure and efficient CPS operations in industrial and critical infrastructure applications. This approach provides a scalable and flexible IDS solution, promoting secure and resilient CPS operations in real-time, high-stakes environments. © 2024 IEEE.

Heating, cooling and energy management of cold climate educational built environments using green roofs

Educational spaces in the world with a student population of about 600 million people are significant energy consumers. Also, 66 percent of schools are among energy consumers in the lower categories of energy consumption management. Meanwhile, the world's student population is expanding while nonrenewable energy sources are running out. Recent investigations highlight schools’ focus on energy efficiency in construction, which is driven by escalating energy expenses and depleting resources. This study presents a model of green schools featuring green roof coverings interconnected with controllable window atriums, leveraging green architecture as a renewable energy solution. It assesses the impact of green roofs coupled with atriums on summer ventilation and winter heat control in cold climate regions, contrasting with conventional school designs. This study aims to improve the thermal performance of schools, reduce heat losses from the roof and walls of schools, and also help improve natural ventilation in classrooms. The research followed a descriptive-analytical approach and employed simulation techniques. The model is simulated using the Carrier HAP, and its analyses are validated by the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED certification. Then, a comparison is made between the thermal loads of the proposed model and the thermal loads of the conventional school model in this climate. The results demonstrate the advantage of using green roofs in improving thermal loads in winter and cooling loads in summer in classroom models with green roofs connected to atriums compared to classrooms with conventional 40 cm thick roofs or 66 cm thick roofs without greenery. Energy savings are achieved by creating schools with green roofs associated with atriums while maintaining students' connection with nature and utilizing this cover as an auxiliary learning space. Energy savings are 54.95 % in winter and 76.11 % in summer compared to conventional 40 cm thick roofs and 66 cm thick

Origami provides an opportunity to construct a wide range of 3D functional structures by folding a flat sheet. It can be used to develop various soft functional robots by combining soft smart actuators. However, a simple and an effective model that can address the challenging problem of designing origami patterns to connect origami design with robotics is lacking, thereby greatly increasing the threshold of soft origami robots and hindering its development. This study proposes an easy-to-use inverse origami design model to generate the flat crease pattern from the desired folded shape automatically while simulating origami morphing by simply providing the shape parameters or 2D shape graphics. This method overcomes the difficulty of origami design and enables a close connection between origami and robotics. Through this method, various soft origami robots can be developed with low design complexity and time cost to achieve different functions, thereby promoting the development of soft origami robots. © 2024 Mary Ann Liebert Inc.. In this paper, an incentive mechanism is developed to maximize the weighted social welfare for pseudo-gradient-based noncooperative dynamical systems. In the proposed approach, the system manager manipulates agents' decision making by collecting taxes and giving subsidies to the agents under a sustainable budget constraint using the partial knowledge related to the payoff structure from the agents except a secret agent. To avoid direct acquisition of the payoff information of all the agents, our idea is to shift the stationary points of those partial agents and hence indirectly move the Nash equilibrium of the entire system. Sufficient conditions are derived under which the Nash equilibrium is shifted towards the target state achieving Pareto efficiency under the incentive mechanism without knowing any payoff information of the secret agent. Some convergent conditions to ensure agents' state converge to the target state under a sustainable budget are provided for the given initial state. We present a numerical example to illustrate the efficacy of our results. © 2024 IEEE.

Illegible handwriting on medical prescriptions poses a significant challenge, often leading to the misinterpretation of drug names and dosages. This issue primarily stems from doctors' use of Latin abbreviations, driven by time constraints during patient consultations. The resultant discrepancies in prescription interpretation can potentially expose patients to incorrect medications and dosages, leading to adverse effects. In response to this concern, this study proposes a novel system integrating Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) models. Promising findings are reported in this study, achieving a loss of 0.4874 and an accuracy of 0.83 in the latest trial. The final model offers a potential solution to the persistent problem of illegible prescriptions, enhancing patient safety in the healthcare domain. © 2024 IEEE.
