Battery safety in electric vehicles is a comprehensive engineering endeavor that requires meticulous consideration at every stage, including battery materials, battery pack design, and battery management systems (BMS). This review focuses on safety management strategies and practical applications of lithium-ion power batteries. The management of battery safety primarily encompasses charge and discharge safety, high-voltage safety, and thermal safety. Among these, charge and discharge safety management aims to prevent battery damage or safety incidents caused by overcharge or over discharge. High-voltage safety management involves detecting insulation faults, overcurrent, and other potential risks to prevent electrical hazards. Thermal safety management ensures individual battery cells, modules, and the battery pack maintain an optimal operating temperature range and uniform temperature distribution, thereby preventing thermal runaway. © The Author(s) 2024.

The self-heating effect occurs when the bulk acoustic wave filter is loaded with power, leading to the deterioration of the insertion loss. In this paper, the self-heating effect of bulk acoustic wave filters at high frequency power is investigated. A test system is built to obtain the maximum surface temperature and the insertion loss of the bulk acoustic wave filter at different power levels. The test results show that the self-heating effect causes the internal temperature of the bulk acoustic wave filter to increase further after increasing the power, resulting in the increase of the insertion loss. The test system and analysis method in this paper verify the relationship between the self-heating effect and the insertion loss, and can provide guidance for the construction of the relevant reliability test system of the bulk acoustic wave filter. Given the exacerbating effect of fossil fuel use in conventional vehicles on the greenhouse effect, the imperative development of electric vehicle technology becomes evident. To address the high energy and power density demands of electric vehicles, a lithium-ion battery-ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system proves effective. This study, utilizing ADVISOR and Matlab/Simulink, employs an electric vehicle prototype for modeling and simulating both logic threshold and fuzzy logic control strategies. It aims to analyze the average output power and state of charge (SOC) of the lithium-ion battery, as well as the SOC of the ultracapacitor, within hybrid energy storage systems governed by these differing strategies. The findings indicate that the fuzzy logic control strategy results in a reduction of 2.73 kW in the average output power of the lithium-ion battery and a 20% increase in the SOC drop rate of the ultracapacitor compared to the logic threshold control strategy. Under the logic threshold control strategy, lithium-ion batteries demonstrate superior output stability, albeit within a broader amplitude range. Conversely, the fuzzy logic control strategy maximizes the utilization of ultracapacitors but leads to frequent fluctuations in the output power of lithium-ion batteries, thereby exhibiting reduced stability. These results underscore the inherent trade-offs between stability and utilization efficiency in hybrid energy storage systems for electric vehicles under different control strategies. The selection of a control strategy should be contingent upon specific performance priorities and objectives within the context of electric vehicle design and operation. © The Author(s) 2024.

The degradation of satellite-based phased array antenna would affect the performance of the antenna, which in turn can prevent the signal from being transmitted properly. Therefore, satellite-based phased array antennas always require extremely high reliability. During the manufacturing and use stages, uncertainties are everywhere and performance degradation is inevitable. Both can threaten the reliability of satellite-based phased array antennas. However, existing studies mostly use voting models, which hardly reflect both points. In this paper, based on the principles of reliability science, a reliability model based on the performance margin is developed for satellite-based phased array antennas, considering the performance degradation and multiple sources of uncertainties. Firstly, the performance margin model for the degradation of the satellite-based phased array antenna is constructed based on its functional principle and the degradation processes of its critical components including phase shifters and power amplifiers. Then, uncertainties from different sources, including manufacturing tolerances and environmental temperature, are analyzed and each uncertainty is quantified by a probability distribution. Finally, a reliability model is developed. A numerical study of a satellite-based phased-array antenna is carried out. The results show the degradation processes of key performance parameters and reliability of the satellite-based phased array antenna during operation. © 2022 IEEE.

Silicon carbide (SiC) metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) are gradually replacing silicon (Si)based devices as the core devices for power conversion in high-temperature, high-pressure, and high-frequency applications due to their superior material properties. The long-term reliability of SiC MOSFETs has become a research focus. Power cycling tests, an important aging test for evaluating device reliability, can reflect the reliability under real working conditions to some extent. The test is conducted using a constant on/off time mode, and the on-state resistance and body diode voltage drop of the devices are measured online during the aging test. The experimental results show that an increase in on-state resistance during power cycling tests causes an increase in junction temperature, which leads to wire bond aging and eventually results in SiC MOSFET failure. © 2023 IEEE.

Traditional reliability tests, such as High- Temperature Gate Bias (HTGB) and High-Temperature Reverse Bias (HTRB), are primarily designed for Si-based devices. However, these tests fail to emulate the novel operational mode characterized by high voltage operation (Vds > 1,000 V) combined with rapid switching (dVds/dt > 50 V/ns), rendering users unable to accurately assess the reliability of commercial devices under the new condition. A dynamic reverse bias (DRB) testing platform with adjustable dVds/dt functionality has been introduced, which up to 80 V/ns, achieved by adjusting gate voltage. The functionality of the platform was experimentally validated in this study, followed by DRB testing. After approximately one thousand hours of testing, noticeable degradation of the test device was observed. Simultaneously, HTRB testing was conducted under identical voltage conditions for comparison purposes. It was discovered that the degradation mechanisms differed between the two testing conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

reliability modelling based on product performance is a hot issue in recent years. Since the relationships between performance and numerous influencing factors are greatly terribly complex, surrogate model with experimental designs has received wide attention. However, due to the limitations of experimental capabilities and conditions, it is difficult to control and measure all the variables in a set of experiments. Hence, it is often difficult to balance the generality, significance and accuracy in one single model. To overcome these issues, in this paper, a stepwise refined performance surrogate model (SRPSM) is proposed. Further, by introducing the concept of performance margin in belief reliability theory, a novel reliability modeling method based on SRPSM is developed. To illustrate the proposed method, the reliability model building process of a new electrical connector product is shown as an example. © 2023 IEEE.

The degradation of certain components within DC-DC power supplies can lead to abnormal performance, resulting in the occurrence of faults. The degradation of components can cause changes in output voltage and current, and the different degradation characteristics of components have different impacts on the characteristics of output parameters. Therefore, it is necessary to master this impact relationship, that is, the fault propagation mechanism can be used to effectively diagnose faults and manage health. Studying the fault propagated mechanism is an important prerequisite for fault diagnosis. Output terminals of DC-DC power supply are usually connected in parallel with electrolytic capacitors. The function of electrolytic capacitors is to filter, filtering out most of the AC part of the output voltage, and reducing the ripple of the output voltage. Electrolytic capacitors are the most vulnerable components to failure in switching power supplies, with approximate 60% of failed components being electrolytic capacitors. Therefore, the fault propagation mechanism of electrolytic capacitors is a key research topic. Most research focuses on the fault propagation mechanism based on steady-state output signals. This article studies the fault propagation mechanism based on transient output signals. Through experimental testing, the impact of parameter degradation of electrolytic capacitors on the transient waveform of output voltage and the mapping relationship between capacitor degraded parameters and transient waveform are studied. The method is to analyze the voltage waveform when the current step changes using equivalent degradated experiments of capacitors. Its advantage lies in the fact that transient waveforms are more sensitive than steady-state waveforms and require lower sampling rates, making it easier to analyze the degradated characteristics of electrolytic capacitors. In this paper, a GAF-SWT algorithm designed for fault diagnosis of flight control system, and a typical diagnosis program of flight control system is developed by using gradient angle field theory and Swin-Transformer classification algorithm. Among them, Gramian Angular Field can image data, completely retain data features, and maintain good generalization ability, while Swin-Transformer, as the latest image classification algorithm, has achieved remarkable results in the field of image classification and can more accurately identify flight control data visualization features. This method can extract key information from complex data quickly and accurately, and effectively solve the common fault detection in flight control system. The method is applied to the aileron actuator system. Due to the harsh working condition, effective fault diagnosis of aircrafts’ hydraulic systems is necessary to ensure their safety and reliability. In the ideal scenarios with rich failure data, deep learning (DL)-based methods generally achieve the satisfied fault diagnosis thanks to their remarkable capability of adaptive feature learning. However, the problem of missing data is quite common for the practical hydraulic systems, which means that it is hard to collect the sufficient failure samples to training these deep models. It thus severely limits their applications in practices. Aiming at the missing data problem of hydraulic systems, this paper provides a novel two-stage model named frequency-domain generative adversarial convolution neural networks (FGCN), to improve their fault diagnosis ability under the limited failure samples. In the first stage, a unique generative adversarial block is designed to generate the high-quality data considering characteristics of signals’ frequency domain. In the second stage, with the help of the augmented failure samples, the convolution block is fully trained to capture the intrinsic representations of hydraulic systems. The proposed method is validated by the dataset of real hydraulic pumps with missing data. The experimental results show that our proposed method based on FGCN improve the diagnostic accuracy by 13% compared with the mainstream DL-based ones, which reveal its superior performance for the fault diagnosis limited by the missing data. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
