This paper presents a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation of a new multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal detection algorithm applicable to ultra-high throughput MIMO communication systems. The algorithm simplifies the computation significantly compared to traditional K-Best algorithm, and with negligible bit error ratio (BER) degradation. A highly-parallel structure is implemented on the Xilinx Virtex-4 (XC4VLX200) platform, which achieves 2.2 Gbps detection throughput and is about four times over previous implementation. Moreover, a pre-processing method is realized to reduce the number of multipliers inside the detector and shrinks the critical path delay down to 6.79 ns. Together with candidate-sharing-architecture to further save the hardware cost, a high speed, compact signal detector for MIMO systems is demonstrated.

This system integrates a CMOS process compatible photodiode, a low noise capacitive trans-impedance amplifier (CTIA) and a 12-bit pipelined analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The chip fabricated in a 0.18-mum standard CMOS technology occupies 3 MMZ and consumes 37 mW. Experimental results show that the Nwell/Psub photodiode used in the fluorescent detecting experiment has a sensitivity of 0.1 A/W at 515 nm and a dark current of 3 nA/cm 2 . The maximum differential and integral nonlinearity of the designed ADC are +0.8 LSB and -3 LSB, respectively. With a solution volume of 0.5 mul, the detector system is able to detect the fluorescein solution concentration as low as 625 ng/ml. The minimum detectable fluorescent intensity and photocurrent are 18 nW/cm 2 and 36 fA, respectively.

As one part of the efforts to break the bottleneck of power sources in development of integrated microsystems, a silicon based air-breathing micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) was developed in this work. By using micro-machining technologies compatible with that in processing of the other MEMS devices, the anode and cathode micro flow-field plates had been successfully fabricated on a pair of 2-inch silicon wafers. The silicon μDMFC was evaluated under ambient conditions using aqueous methanol solution with different concentrations. Results show that open circuit potential (OCP) of the μDMFC was above to 0.6 V, and by using 3mol/L methanol, the peak current density and power density of the silicon μDMFC could reach 28mA/cm 2 and 8mW/cm2, respectively.

A novel thresholding algorithm is presented to achieve improved image segmentation performance at low computational cost in this paper. The proposed algorithm uses a normalized graph cut measure as the thresholding principle to distinguish an object from the background. The weight matrices used in evaluating the graph cuts are based on the gray levels of an image, rather than the commonly used image pixels. Therefore, the proposed algorithm occupies much smaller storage space and requires much lower computational costs and implementation complexity than other image segmentation algorithms based on graph cuts. This fact makes the proposed algorithm attractive in various real-time vision applications such as automatic target recognition (ATR). A large number of examples are presented to show the superior performance of the proposed thresholding algorithm compared to existing thresholding algorithms.
