This paper presents a 3-transistor CMOS active pixel structure with in-pixel correlated double sampling. designed in a standard 0.18 μm CMOS process, the structure effectively suppresses temporal noise and fixed pattern noise (FPN), thanks to the shared correlated double sampling circuit inside the pixel. Fill factor is also improved while maintaining pixel performance. Validation by Spectre simulator shows that the proposed structure suppresses 100 mV input offset to the microvolt range, and the pixel readout time is ∼90 ns. The average power consumption of each pixel is 18 μW. © 2013 IEEE.

Albumin permeability across endothelial monolayers under pulsatile shear stress

Recent studies suggest that the temporal gradient of shear stress that is generated by blood flow plays an important role in the pathology of arteriosclerosis. We focused on the temporal gradient of shear stress and measured the permeability of albumin under steady or pulsatile shear stress conditions. Porcine aortic endothelial cells were seeded on a membrane filter and subjected to steady or pulsatile shear stress (1 Hz) at 1 Pa for 48 h, and the permeability of albumin was measured over time. The permeability increased gradually under steady flow but increased acutely under pulsatile shear stress. In particular, the maximum permeability of albumin differed under these conditions. The value was 4. 2 × 10-5 cm/s at 18 h under pulsatile shear stress and 2. 8 × 10-5 cm/s at 48 h under steady shear stress. The permeable route of albumin was examined using isoproterenol, which decreases junctional permeability. The increase in albumin permeability with pulsatile shear stress was decreased by isoproterenol. These results suggest that the increased permeability of albumin with pulsatile shear stress was related to trafficking through paracellular junctions. Thus, pulsation may promote a mechanotransduction process that differs from that of steady shear stress, and these pulsation effects likely play an important role in the permeability of macromolecules. © 2012 Japanese Society of Biorheology.

Electrical heating box with multi -loop control has several features as great inertia and coupling. It is a type of multi-variable system. To solve the problem, a kind of decoupling designed implicit generalized predictive control (IGPC) method is discussed. The Multi-variable IGPC based on decoupling design. Using decentralized objective function and feedforward decoupling, the decoupling IGPC is achieved to control a multi -variable system. According to input and output data, the parameters of optimal control law could be identified through use of Recursive Least Squares (RLS). This method avoids solving Diophantine equations by online. The IGPC is used for control electrical heating box with three multi-loops through simulation study. In the test process, compared with the IGPC effect and traditional PID control effect and analyzed the control effect through changing softness parameter. The test results show that the IGPC could eliminate the coupling between loops and have good control stability.

The pulsed eddy current (PEC) technique generates responses over a wide range of frequencies, containing more spectral coverage than traditional eddy current inspection. Eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT), a newly developed non-destructive testing (NDT) technique, has advantages such as rapid inspection of a large area within a short time, high spatial resolution, high sensitivity and stand-off measurement distance. This paper investigates ECPT for the evaluation of gear fatigue tests. The paper proposes a statistical method based on single channel blind source separation to extract details of gear fatigue. The discussion of transient thermal distribution and patterns of fatigue contact surfaces as well as the non-contact surfaces have been reported. In addition, the measurement for gears with different cycles of fatigue tests by ECPTand the comparison results between ECPT with magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) have been evaluated. The comparison shows the competitive capability of ECPT in fatigue evaluation.

Avoiding use of traditional high-speed analog-to digital converters (ADCs) and constant fraction discriminators, multi-voltage threshold (MVT) method is able to digitally sample positron emission tomography (PET) scintillation pulse with reasonable cost. As the key component of the MVT method, a time-to-digital convertor (TDC) with high resolution and large dynamic range is presented in this work. The TDC architecture uses a delay locked loop (DLL) to generate the fast clock edges from a 100 MHz clock, and a 32-stage Vernier delay lines (VDL) is used to achieve the 40pS timing resolution. The proposed TDC is designed using the standard 0.25 μm CMOS technology with 2.5V normal supply voltage. The power consumption of the TDC is ~70 mW.

In order to consider the effect of battery temperature on the total fuel consumption when a Pontryagin's Minimum Principle (PMP)-based power management strategy is applied to a fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV), this paper designates the battery temperature as a second-state variable other than the battery state of charge (SOC) and defines a new costate for the battery temperature in the control problem. The PMP-based power management strategy is implemented in a computer simulation and the relationship among the final values of the two state variables and the total fuel consumption is illustrated based on the simulation results. This relationship is defined as an optimal surface in this research. Using the optimal surface, it can be concluded that considering the battery temperature effect in the PMP-based power management strategy improves the fuel economy of the FCHV. Potential fuel economy gains attributed to consideration of the battery temperature effect are also determined based on the optimal surfaces. The advanced pressurized water reactor with a tight hexagonal lattice core design has its potential to improve uranium utilization. With a smaller pitch-to-diameter ratio (p/d) ranging from 1.05 to 1.20, a major problem of a tight lattice core is the emergency core cooling in a loss-of-coolant accident. The NEPTUN-LWHCR and FLORESTAN reflooding experiments preformed at PSI (Paul Scherrer Institute) and KfK (Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe) during the verification period 1985-1990 showed that a LWHCR (light water high conversion reactors) had higher peak cladding temperatures and smaller quench rates than that of a conventional LWR (Rouge and Dreier, 1992;Erbacher and Wiehr, 1988). Furthermore, the existing system codes like RELAP5, CATHARE, TRAC may not be able to simulate the reflooding phase of a LWHCR. In this paper, the characteristics of the reflooding phase of tight lattice cores have been investigated. Then improvements to heat transfer models of precursory cooling have been introduced into RELAP5/MOD3.2. In addition, a new model has been developed to predict the heat release in the vicinity of the quench front. These modifications are assessed using selected tests of NEPTUN-LWHCR and FLORESTAN experiments. Comparisons between the calculated results and measured data indicate that the modified code can predict the peak cladding temperatures and quench temperatures relatively well. While for droplet entrainment prediction, there is still large room for improvement. Further validation is needed for the models proposed in this paper especially for a tight lattice core with a p/d ratio less than 1.10, and more efforts are required to study the droplet distribution and droplet size downstream of the quench front for higher reflooding rate tests (larger than 4.5 cm/s). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

High angle of attack flows over a 20° conical forebody are computed by the commercial CFD code ANSYS CFX in this paper. The free-stream velocities are 10 to 70 m/s, the Reynolds number based on the forebody base diameter varies from 0.1×106 to 0.7×106, and the angle of attack ranges from 10° to 35°, the boundary layer is under free transition. The C-O structured meshes are used to compute the entire flow field. The axial and radial grid numbers are 81 and 121, respectively, while the circumferential grid points uniformly distributed with different grid number of 120, 180, 240 and 360, respectively. The pressure distributions over the forebody surface have been computed by three computational models, and the results computed by the transitional model agree well with the experimental data, which were measured over 40 roll angles with equal intervals for each test condition. The computed total pressure coefficient and axial vorticity distributions over the cross-flow section are studied. The three vortex pairs, i.e., the primary, secondary and tertiary vortex, separated from the forebody boundary layer at angle of attack of 15°-35° and wind speed of 10-70m/s are captured. The approximate conical flow features of pressure distribution and primary vortex location are identified. © 2013 by The Authors.

The method of characteristics based on arbitrary trajectory adopts interpolation method to deal with the reflective boundary, which can break the restriction on the choice of trajectory layouts and quadrature sets. An acceleration and parallelization scheme is used to reduce the computational time. A generalized coarse-mesh finite difference (GCMFD) method which can be performed on generalized geometry is applied for acceleration. To effectively accelerate, we extend a single GCMFD method to the two-level GCMFD method, one level for the spatial acceleration and the other for the energy group acceleration. On the other hand, a parallelization method based on message-passing model uses an angular decomposition scheme. By grouping the directions to satisfy the reflective relation can effectively reduce the data communications. The numerical results show a good performance on reducing the number of iterations and speeding up the code after the acceleration and parallelization. Copyright ©2012 by ASME.
