This paper presents the design and implementation of an autonomous picking robot specifically for harvesting elongated fruits such as loofahs and bitter melons. The robot utilizes a tracked chassis to navigate field terrains, equipped with IMU and GNSS modules for navigation and positioning. Mounted on the chassis is a 6-degree-of-freedom robotic arm designed for picking actions, with a combination of a flexible gripper and electric scissors at its end to enhance picking efficiency and safety. Two RGBD cameras are used for global and local perception, while the YOLO model is employed for fruit recognition and localization. Experimental results demonstrate that the robot can complete a full picking cycle in an average of 20 seconds and temporarily store the harvested fruits in an onboard storage bin. Overall, this picking robot significantly reduces labor costs and improves the efficiency and quality of field operations and fruit harvesting. © The Authors.

Viewing Pattern Assisted Proactive Partial Caching for 360-degree Videos in MEC Networks

Caching 360-degree videos at the network edge can reduce user content request latency and mitigate transmission congestion in backbone networks. Given the fact that user only views a part of content of 360-degree scope at any time, caching the entire video is resource inefficient. To address this, we focus a Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC)-based 360-degree video service system, where the edge server only caches a portion of each video that is most likely falling in the Field of View (FoV) of users. To minimize the average video request latency of all users in the system, we formulate a large-scale 0-1 knapsack problem, which is NP-hard. To tackle it, we proposed a heuristic algorithm where the user viewing patterns extracted from the historical request information are taken into account. Specifically, we first design a cascading cache space allocation method to assign the total cache space of edge server to each segment of videos. After that, the original problem is decomposed into several small-scale yet individual tile caching subproblems with compressed solution space. Then, they are solved by using the dynamic programming algorithm with moderate complexity. To further enhance the caching performance, the PSO-based algorithm is designed to fine tune the parameters involved in the proposed caching algorithm. In addition, we introduce a content-based method to calculate the request probability of the newly generated videos. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through simulations based on a real world dataset, where the results demonstrate a substantial improvement in both video request latency and cache hit rate compared to the benchmark methods. © 2014 IEEE.

As the deadliest form of pollution, air pollution had a prolonged severe damage to the human health and life safety of nearly 99% of the world's population. Facing to the problem that billions of tons of pollutants discharged into the air per year by industrial activities, this paper proposed a novel image-based air pollution monitor (IAPM) by incorporating local and global information in the self-adaptive multiscale transform domain, so as to achieve the timely and effective leakage detection of typical air pollutants from a single image. To be specific, this paper first developed a screen-shaped module according to two significant findings in visual neuroscience, which include the high sensitivity of human eyes to horizontal and vertical stimuli and the center-surround inhibition, by designing and fusing the square module, horizontal strip module and vertical strip module parallelly for simulating the behaviour of human eyes to extract local features. Second, the learnable weights and proportional mapping were applied to incorporate the screen-shaped module and lightweight vision transformer as backbone, towards more richly exploiting and fusing local and global information just as the way a brain perceives external stimuli. Third, a new self-adaptive multiscale transform domain method was devised based on two motivations from the visual characteristics of multiscale perception and the brain characteristics of self-adaptive domain transform to modify the backbone by using the operations of pooling and pointwise convolution. Extensive experiments implemented on the datasets of carbon particulate matters and ethylene leakage confirmed the superior monitoring performance of the proposed IAPM model beyond the state-of-the-art (SOTA) peers by an accuracy gain of about 4%. Furthermore, the proposed IAPM model only required 0.089 GFLOPs and 0.15 million model parameters, remarkably outperforming SOTA competitors in computational efficiency and storage resources. © 1999-2

The complex process mechanism of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) and the strong nonlinearity of multi-variable coupling bring significant challenges to the model predictive control (MPC) of FCC production process models. This study presents a modeling method of FCC system based on improved extreme learning machine Hammerstein (IELM-Hammerstein). Aiming at the nonlinear characteristics of FCC process, the Hammerstein model's static nonlinear subsystem is constructed using an extreme learning machine (ELM). Considering the instability of the algorithm caused by random weights and thresholds in the ELM, the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is adopted to calculate the parameters, then one recursive least square (RLS) method is derived from calculating the linear subsystem regression parameters of Hammerstein model. To prove the effectiveness of this method, the comparative experiments with the traditional identification method are carried out, and this method is applied to modeling and control of the fractionating system in a petroleum refinery. The experimental results indicates that the proposed method guarantees the modeling accuracy of the fractionating system, and improves the tracking control performance. © 2023 IEEE.

Aiming at the problems of stability and efficiency of full-width cross-axis cutting in large section semi-coal rock roadway under complex geological conditions, a shield type intelligent driving robot system is developed, and a new shield type full-width cross-axis cutting system was proposed. The body structure model of the cutting system was constructed, and the mechanical model of the full-width transverse axis drum of the cutting system, the mechanical coupling model of "cutting robot - rectangular shield - top and bottom wall rock", and the force transfer mechanism in the cutting process of the drum were established. The stability condition of the cutting system is determined according to the relationship between the stability moment and the jumping moment of the cutting system, and the stability coefficient model of the cutting system when the shield and the roof are coupled is established. The Adams simulation model of the cutting system is established, and the cutting performance of the coal rock with hardness of f6 is simulated, and the stability coefficient is always greater than 1.1. The simulation and industrial test results show that the shield type full width transverse axis cutting system has characteristics of good stability, cutting efficiency and high forming quality. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

SAR target Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) is indispensable in SAR image interpretation. Recently, deep learning technology has been widely used in SAR target recognition tasks. Most networks achieve incremental improvements in target recognition by modifying their structures to extract visual features of targets. However, due to the unique imaging mechanism, relying solely on visual features often leads to the loss of target information. In contrast, the ASC model, which captures the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of the target, plays a crucial role in target recognition tasks. Unfortunately, traditional parameter estimation methods for extracting the ASC model are computationally expensive and time-consuming, making them impractical for real-world applications. To address these issues, we propose a novel target recognition method based on electromagnetic scattering features in this paper. First, a lightweight network-based feature extraction module is designed. Then, the target ASC image is used as the ground truth for guidance, with image intensity and target structure serving as the loss functions during training. Finally, an ASC model-guided feature fusion network is designed, utilizing the fused features for target recognition. On the MSTAR dataset, a visual assessment experiment demonstrated that the proposed feature extraction module effectively extracts electromagnetic scattering features under various operating conditions. Subsequently, in downstream classification tasks, the inclusion of the proposed module resulted in improved accuracy compared to other networks. Additionally, a visualization analysis of the classification network showed that, under the guidance of electromagnetic scattering features, the network achieved good interpretability. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the dynamic coverage of multiple autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) in the presence of static and dynamic obstacles, limited communication distance, and measurement noises. A modular control method including planning, guidance, and control is proposed. At the planning level, a swarm-based dynamic coverage strategy is developed to achieve the coverage of a given domain. Both the collision avoidance and connectivity preservation issues are solved by using artificial potential fields. At the kinematic level, novel adaptive line-of-sight guidance laws are presented based on cascade extended state observers (CESOs), such that accurate guidance signals are given by compensating for time-varying sideslip angle and suppressing measurement noises. At the kinetic level, two CESOs are developed to estimate the internal model uncertainties and external environmental disturbance, and antidisturbance kinetic control laws are designed subsequently. The proposed CESOs overcome the noises sensitivity problem of classical observers, and thus facilitate the practical implementation under measurement noises. The input-to-state stability of the closed-loop system is confirmed by the Lyapunov theory and cascade stability theory. Simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experiment results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed swarm-based dynamic coverage method. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Reinforcement learning(RL) has roots in dynamic programming and it is called adaptive/approximate dynamic programming(ADP) within the control community. This paper reviews recent developments in ADP along with RL and its applications to various advanced control fields. First, the background of the development of ADP is described, emphasizing the significance of regulation and tracking control problems. Some effective offline and online algorithms for ADP/adaptive critic control are displayed, where the main results towards discrete-time systems and continuous-time systems are surveyed, ***, the research progress on adaptive critic control based on the event-triggered framework and under uncertain environment is discussed, respectively, where event-based design, robust stabilization, and game design are reviewed. Moreover, the extensions of ADP for addressing control problems under complex environment attract enormous attention. The ADP architecture is revisited under the perspective of data-driven and RL frameworks,showing how they promote ADP formulation ***, several typical control applications with respect to RL and ADP are summarized, particularly in the fields of wastewater treatment processes and power systems, followed by some general prospects for future research. Overall, the comprehensive survey on ADP and RL for advanced control applications has d emonstrated its remarkable potential within the artificial intelligence era. In addition, it also plays a vital role in promoting environmental protection and industrial intelligence.

Movable antennas (MA) allow flexible positioning within a specified region, enhancing wireless communication performance. This paper explores leveraging MA to improve physical layer security in analog beamforming (AB) systems. Specifically, we aim to maximize the secrecy rate by jointly optimizing the AB and MA positions under constant modulus (CM) and position constraints. To solve the resulting non-convex problem, we propose a penalty product manifold (PPM) method, which converts MA position constraints into a penalty function, reformulating the problem as unconstrained optimization on the product manifold space (PMS). We then derive a parallel conjugate gradient descent (PCGD) algorithm to efficiently update both AB and MA positions, providing analytical solutions at each step and ensuring convergence to a KKT point. Simulation results confirm that the MA system achieves a higher secrecy rate than systems with fixed antenna positions.
