Analyzing determinants of traffic violations in a multi-cultural setting: Case of Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has a diverse population of 2.908 million, with 81% being non-Emiratis from various global regions. This diversity in demographics introduces a complex driving environment with varying skills and experiences, particularly as the majority rely on private vehicles. Road accidents are a leading cause of death globally, with the eastern Mediterranean region, including the UAE, reporting high fatality rates. In Abu Dhabi, the unique licensing policy allows residents from certain countries to obtain a UAE license without testing, potentially contributing to traffic violations and accidents. This study examines the relationship between the UAE's licensing policies and traffic violations in Abu Dhabi using responses from 354 participants surveyed across five vehicle inspections centers, providing insights for policy improvements. We find that: 1) switching of license reports better driving behavior and fewer traffic violations in comparison to those testing for their UAE license;2) foreign drivers from the Eastern have a lower frequency of traffic violations, which may be related to cultural differences;3) household size, income, and education correlate with traffic violations;and 4) irritable drivers have a significantly higher frequency of violations. Our findings challenge assumptions about the risks associated with license conversion and highlight the complex interplay of sociodemographic factors, driving behaviors, and local driving knowledge in shaping traffic violation patterns. © 2025 The Authors

Improving service management in campus IT operations

Purpose - This paper aims at presenting the benefits from implementing IT service management (ITSM) in an organization for managing campus-wide IT operations. In order to improve the fault correlation from business perspectives, we proposed a framework to automate network and system alerts with respect to its business service impact for proactive notification to IT operations management. Design/methodology/approach - The authors first evaluate the effect of IT service management (ITSM) tools in practical adoption followed by experience sharing in developing management process modules in service outsourcing model. Three years of quantitative analysis using real operational data were used to present the effect on ITSM tools adoption. A framework was developed from the study of literatures in service management, incident prioritization, and business continuity planning. For the proposed framework, it consists of a hybrid case-based and rule-based reasoning module and a new approach which utilizing business continuity planning for service-resource mapping with business criticality and user activities. Findings - For the past decade in the IT industry, a paradigm shift in managing IT could be observed. People are concerned more in managing IT services instead of traditional device-oriented IT system or network components. With the term "business-driven IT services," it has raised new challenges in the area of IT service management, especially with respect to the management of service level agreement with service provider and the management of system and network faults. Research limitations/implications - Further work should be carried out on the aspect of using real data for the framework as motivated by the limitations of the present study. Practical real data could help the reader to experience its quantitative benefits. Stuart Wolf This book originated as a series of lectures that were given as part of a Summer School on Spintronics in the end of August, 1998 at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. It has taken some time to get these lectures in a form suitable for this book and so the process has been an iterative one to provide current information on the topics that are covered. There are some topics that have developed in the intervening years and we have tried to at least alert the readers to them in the Introduction where a rather complete set of references is provided to the current state of the art. The field of magnetism, once thought to be dead or dying, has seen a remarkable rebirth in the last decade and promises to get even more important as we enter the new millennium. This rebirth is due to some very new insight into how the spin degree of freedom of both electrons and nucleons can play a role in a new type of electronics that utilizes the spin in addition to or in place of the charge. For this new field to mature and prosper, it is important that students and postdoctoral fellows have access to the appropriate literature that can give them a sound basis in the funda mentals of this new field and I hope that this book is a very good start in this direction.

This paper presents the design, development, and implementation of a bioinspired fault diagnosis scheme applied to a cold gas-based spacecraft *** proposed framework relies on the artificialimmune system metaphor with the goal of monitoring the health of the spacecraft by detecting subsystem upset conditions such as actuator *** dynamic inversion baseline controller with adaptation capabilities has been developed and implemented for attitude control of the spacecraft. The performance of the proposed health-monitoring scheme is determined by analyzing the system response under different actuator failures while the spacecraft is operated with and without adaptive augmentation. In both cases, the results show acceptable performance in terms of high detection activity and low false alarms with real-Time capabilities. The application of this artificial intelligence-based scheme to aerospace systems will provide a high impact on space exploration by increasing mission protection and performance. © 2018 by H. Incremental relaying has been recently introduced to overcome the problem with the restricted resources utilization associated with fixed relaying schemes in a pre-determined manner. Only when the direct path is not usable, the incremental relaying exploits the feedback from the destination to inform the relay about the necessity to send the source signal. In this paper, the performance analysis in terms of the bit error rate (BER) of the decode-and-forward (DF) incremental relaying over mixed fading channels is provided. The effects of the Co-channel interference near the destination and the relay caused respectively by the multiple L and N interferers are presented. Numerical results are provided to prove the solidity of our assumptions and compare the results of the system with and without the effects of the interference at the relay.

Incremental relaying was firstly introduced in order to accommodate for the restriction associated with the fixed relaying schemes by using the intermediate relays only when they are needed by using a feedback from the destination to determine whether or not to use the relay which depends mainly on the usability of the direct path between the source and the relay. When the relay receives this negative feedback from the destination then it will send the signal to the destination within the second time slot which by then will be combined with the source signal using MRC, and by this, the system resources will be utilized efficiently. This paper provide the performance analysis of a decode-and-forward incremental relaying cooperative relaying over Rayleigh and Nakagami-m mixed fading channels with the presence of multiple interferers L and N near the destination and the relay respectively, which in turn will degrade the overall system performance and also compares the system performance with and without the presence of the interferers near the relay. Numerical results are provided to validate our assumptions.

It is well known that the electric and thermal conductivities of materials depend largely on their crystal orientation. Meanwhile, the imposition of a high magnetic field is a very effective method of obtaining highly crystal-aligned structures. Recently, thermoelectric materials, that is, materials which can directly convert electrical energy to thermal energy and vice versa, have attracted significant attention for their potential uses in solving environmental problems. In this study, highly crystal-aligned structures of Bi2Te3 compact were prepared by introducing crystal alignment into a green sample by conducting slip casting under a high magnetic field, followed by compaction by pulse-discharge sintering (PDS). By aligning the crystal orientation, electric resistivity was reduced, while the Seebeck coefficient maintained a value nearly identical to that of non-aligned crystals. The reference value of a dimensionless figure of merit as high as 1.3 at 323 K was obtained. © 2006 The Japan Institute of Metals.

Residual stresses play a pivotal role in influencing the structural integrity of welded structures, a consequence inherent to the welding process itself. In scenarios involving cyclic thermal and mechanical loading during operation, the dynamic transformation of residual stress patterns arises from multiple influencing factors. In addition to thermomechanical considerations, the evolution of the microstructure significantly contributes to this intricate and interconnected phenomenon. The selection of 347H austenitic stainless steel stands out as an optimal choice due to its exceptional resistance to creep and corrosion. Nonetheless, unforeseen failures continue to pose significant challenges in meeting design criteria. Residual stress remains the primary factor for predicting the lifetime of welded components, and a reliable measurement method for this purpose is still lacking. In this research paper, we present a comprehensive series of measurements conducted on lab-made plate welds subjected to different thermal treatment conditions. Simultaneously, we employ and compare two distinct calculation methodologies to assess the disparities and the feasibility of applying the plane stress methodology to thick service pipe welds. Through a meticulous measurement plan encompassing both As-Welded and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) lab-made plate welds, which aim to determine the impact of PWHT on the redistribution and relaxation of the residual stress field. Additionally, both plate welds undergo 361.5 hours of thermal aging (TA) at 650℃ to mimic as practical as possible service conditions. The validation of both methodologies is subsequently established across four distinct thermal treatment conditions. Consequently, the reliable application of the plane stress methodology to service-grade thin/thick pipes becomes apparent. © 2024 by The United States Government and Shell Global Solutions.
