This paper presents the design, development and implementation of a bio-inspired fault diagnosis scheme applied to a cold gas based spacecraft prototype. The proposed framework relies on the Artificial Immune System metaphor (AIS) with the goal of monitoring the health of the spacecraft by detecting subsystem upset conditions such as actuator malfunctions. A non-linear dynamic inversion (NLDI) baseline controller has been developed and implemented for attitude control of the spacecraft. The performance of the proposed health monitoring scheme is determined by analyzing the system response under different actuator failures and the results show acceptable performance in terms of high detection rate and low false alarms. The application of this artificial intelligent based scheme to aerospace systems will provide a high impact on space exploration by increasing mission protection and performance. © 2017, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Adequate definition and adoption of standardized management processes form the foundation to enhance IT service management (ITSM) especially in tally with the arrangement of outsourcing operation management and contracting project development. With the establishment of defacto standard IT infrastructure library (ITIL) for ITSM implementation in these days, management software tools are available in the market. However, proper service management processes shall be developed to align with the existing daily operations workflow, model around ITIL framework, rather than compromising commercial product standard template. This paper first evaluates the effect of ITSM tools in practical adoption in supporting various types of service category in campus environment of technology industries. Experience sharing to address specific concerns in developing customized management process modules for the campus with service outsourcing will be discussed afterwards. Finally, a future work on proactive service impact analysis framework is defined.

For any fault of the same severity level, traditional fault discovery and notification tools provide equal weighting from business points of view. To improve the fault correlation from business perspectives, we proposed a framework to automate network and system alerts with respect to its business service impact for proactive notification to IT operations management. This paper outlines the value of business continuity planning (BCP) during the course of service impact analysis, placing particular emphasis on the business perspective in the processes of IT service management. The framework explicitly employs BCP relevant processes in order to identify the relationships between business services and IT resources A practical case in IT operations to illustrate the concept was then conducted.

The Microgravity Materials science Program, within the former Office of Biological and Physical Research, established a strong research capability through partnerships between NASA and the scientific research community. This program was theme-based and involved hundreds of nationally and internationally recognized materials scientists having expertise in broad classes of materials. During the past two years, the Microgravity Materials science Program has shifted emphasis from fundamental research to increase focus on strategic research areas to enable exploration. With the announcement of the vision for space exploration, it was clear that additional emphasis in strategic materials science areas was necessary. In its report, "A Journey to Inspire, Innovate, and Discover," the President's Commission recognized that achieving the exploration objectives would require significant technical innovation, research, and development in focal areas defined as "enabling technologies." Among the 17 enabling technologies identified for initial focus were: advanced structures;advanced power and propulsion;closed-loop life support and habitability;extravehicular activity systems;autonomous systems and robotics;scientific data collection and analysis;biomedical risk mitigation;and planetary in situ resource utilization. Crews must be protected from the severe radiation environment beyond Earth's magnetic field. The overall launch complement can and must be reduced by developing repair and fabrication techniques which utilize or recycle available materials. In addition to reducing the total launch mass, mission safety aspects of this capability have been recognized by the National Research Council Space Studies Board in noting that mission success may depend upon use of local resources to fabricate a replacement part to repair a critical system. As the internet becomes the information-technology backbone for more and more operations, including critical infrastructures such as water and power systems, the security problems introduced by linking such operations to the internet become more of a concern. Various communities have considered these problems and approached solutions from a variety of perspectives. In this paper, we consider the contributions we believe control theory can make towards developing tools for analyzing whole system security, that is, security of a system that may include its physical and human elements as well as its cyber components. In particular, we contrast notions of security focused on protecting information, and thus concerned primarily with delivering the right information to the right people (and no one else), with a different perspective on system security focused on protecting system functionality, which is concerned primarily with system robustness to particular attacks (and may not be concerned with privacy of communications).

Variable Z0, a new concept in antenna design and optimization, is applied to two optimization problems: a multi-stub matching network (MSMN) using biogeography-based optimization (BBO), and an ultra wideband meander monopole antenna (MMA) using central force optimization (CFO). BBO is a newly-proposed stochastic global search and optimization evolutionary algorithm (EA) used to determine MSMN stub lengths and locations for optimum (minimum) reflection coefficient. CFO is a deterministic EA used to optimize the MMA's impedance bandwidth (IBW) while maintaining good average gain without considering the radiation pattern in detail. Two cases are investigated for both problems: (a) fixed characteristic impedance Z0, and (b) variable characteristic impedance. In the first case, Z0 is a fixed user-specified parameter (the traditional methodology), whereas in the second, it is a true variable quantity whose value is determined by the optimization methodology, which is a new technology. Variable Z0 is a fundamentally different design approach in optimization problems. BBO's fixed Z0 results for MSMN are compared to published data computed using Nelder-Mead optimization with BBO exhibiting better performance. BBO's results are improved even more using Variable Z0 technology. A similar performance improvement is seen for Variable Z0 applied to the CFO-optimized MMA. © 2013 Cambridge University Press and the European Microwave Association.

Space-based Earth Observation allows us to simultaneously detect changes on Earth’s surfaces over a large area. As a result, it’s often used to assist with disaster assessments to understand associated property damages in the affected areas. Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, are very popular for their applications in handling disasters and are being utilized as a key tool to support decision making throughout the disaster management process. And top of it, the use of social media, especially Twitter, has become a popular communication platform which is identified in providing vital information in emergency situations. Twitter users can use the services to work synergistically regardless of physical distance. To demonstrate the benefits of supplementing Earth observations with Twitter data in disaster assessments, we use a recent fire in Southern California, Bobcat fire, that started on September 6, 2020 and burned for over 3 months until it was finally contained on December 18, 2020 as a case study. The plume from the fire spanned more than 1,000 miles with smoke travelling across the entire North American continent. 116,000 acres of land got affected along with unprecedented wildlife loss. Also this fire has turned the high sierra granite gorge into bare and ashen sloped. In this study, we integrated Earth observations with data from Twitter, to assess a more comprehensive view of the overall damages including physical and emotional state as an aftermath of a disaster. Remote sensing data lets us to understand pre post fire conditions of the land as well as temperature variation and soil condition of ground. Geographical locations are analyzed from tweets which are compared with levels of various pollutants measured from ground instrumentations and the amount of smoke coverage from satellite imagery. With the additions of Twitter data, using machine learning and natural language processing, we are able to derive a more holistic impact of the Bobcat

In situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) facilitates planetary exploration by drawing needed resources, such as water, from the local environment. However, the extreme nature of these environments require the development of advanced unmanned space systems integrated with sample-capture devices to achieve the ultimate goal of prospecting these resources. This paper presents the design, development and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation testing of guidance and tracking control laws for an autonomous small marsupial free-flyer prospector system. The control laws are based on an extended non-linear dynamic inversion (NLDI) approach and its implementation is illustrated through HIL simulation using a mathematical model of an autonomous vehicle research platform developed by NASA Kennedy Space Center. This vehicle has been designed to support the development, testing and validation of algorithms for safe, reliable, and scalable control space missions with minimal need for human intervention in complex, unstructured environments. The main objective of the control laws is to minimize 3-axis distances with respect to a desired trajectory and maintain stability and adequate performance in the presence of uncertainties. The performance of the control laws is evaluated during autonomous flight in terms of trajectory tracking errors, real-time execution on board the flight computer, and control activity at nominal and dynamically-changing conditions. The results show that for all mission cases investigated the control laws approach has desirable capabilities and is reliable for in-flight testing operation as a next step towards the validation and verification of this configuration. © 2016, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Recently, the number of circulating tumor cells (CTC) in peripheral blood from tumor patients have been recognized as an important biomarker for patient prognosis, especially in breast and prostate cancer. Although CTC has potential as a “liquid biopsy,” it is too small in number to apply for proteomics and genetic analysis. Several devices are currently provided, but are still insufficient. Therefore, we propose a new device for separating the CTC more quickly and easily by using a metal filter consisting of a myriad of precisely electroformed holes. Additionally, a CTC mouse model was useful both to evaluate the accuracy of CTC detection as a preclinical study and to understand the fundamental role of CTC in metastasis.
