The combined unit model of cubic array of intersecting square rods was applied to calculate the effective thermal conductivity of silica aerogels. Steady gas-solid coupling thermal conduction of one dimension in micro-model cell is analyzed. The calculated value of the effective thermal conductivity is 0.011 W/m-K which is close to the experimental value of 0.013W/mK. It is believed that the distribution of pore diameter of silica aerogel has significant influence on the accuracy of the calculated thermal conductivity.

We investigate the spin accumulation in a double quantum dot Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer in which both the Rashba spin-orbit (RSO) interaction and intradot Coulomb interaction are taken into account. Due to the existence of the RSO interaction, the electron, flowing through different arms of the AB ring, will acquire a spin-dependent phase factor in the tunnel-coupling strengths. This phase factor will induce various interesting interference phenomena. It is found that the electrons of the different spin directions can accumulate in the two dots by properly adjusting the bias and the intradot level with a fixed RSO interaction strength. Moreover, both the magnitude and direction of the spin accumulation in each dot can be conveniently controlled and tuned by the gate voltage acting on the dot or the bias on the lead.

By numerically solving the Sch6dinger equation of a three-nuclear-spin system, the effects of the non-uniform nearest-neighbor (NN) interaction on the fidelity of a quantum controlled-controlled-no (CCN) gate are investigated for a digital initial state and a superposition initial state respectively. It is found from our simulation that the ratio of the deviation of the NN coupling δJ to the NN coupling J should be smaller than 0.0005 to ensure a high fidelity of the quantum CCN gate.

Thin, reinforced and biaxially textured Ni5W/Ni12W/Ni5W composite substrate for coated conductor applications has been fabricated by traditional powder metallurgy method using the sparking plasma sintering (SPS) technology, followed by cold rolling and annealing. In-situ EBSD strain-stress analysis shows that the yield stress (δ0.2) can reach 240MPa. The high quality of cubic texture and boundaries of low misorientation angle were stable until elongations as high as 2%. Meanwhile, the cubic grain fractions on surfaces of top Ni5W layer of the composite tapes are 98.3%, 99.5% and 99.8%, respectively, corresponding to be annealed at 1250°C for 60min, 120min and 180min, indicating the cube texture can successfully sustain after severe treatment condition.

The formation energies and electronic structures of Ni-rich Ni-Mn-Ga alloys have been investigated by firstprinciples calculations using the pseudopotential plane wave method based on density functional theory. The results show that the alloying Ni prefers to occupy the Mn site directly in Ni9Mn3Ga4 and to occupy the Mn site and drive the displaced Mn atom to the Ga site in NigMn4Ga3, which is in accordance with the experimental result. According to the lattice constants and the density of states analyses, these site preference behaviours are closely related to the smaller lattice distortion and the lower-energy electronic structure when the excess Ni occupies the Mn site. The effect of Ni alloying on martensitic transformation is discussed and the enhancement of martensitic transformation temperature by Ni alloying is estimated by the calculated formation energy difference between austenite and martensite phases.

Life cycle inventory (LCI) can be used to quantify the energy input, material assumption and environmental emission of a product system in their whole life cycle, and identify measures to improve their environmental property. A data flow balancing algorithm was built by the definitude of LCI steps and the flow sheet modeling, and LCI data compiling method was also gained based on the recursion algorithm for the unit process data flow. Furthermore, the built LCI algorithm was used to verify and practise life cycle inventory of iron and steel production.
