Weighted discriminant neighborhood preserving projection for face recognition

Dimensionality reduction motivated by manifold leaning has been an active research domain in the past few years because of its capability of discovering the essential structure of the data. In contrast to Neighborhood Preserving Embedding (NPE) where only the locality is characterized, we introduce in this paper a new manifold-based dimensionality reduction method coined Weighted Discriminant Neighborhood Preserving Projection (WDNPP) for face recognition. The main idea of WDNPP is an attempt to seek the linear transformation that best discriminates different face classes by maximizing the inter-class manifold while minimizing the intra-class manifold. Specifically, each class center is first weighted in light of the significance of the samples belonging to the same class, then two optimal data-driven weight matrices that correspond to the intra-class scatter and the inter-class scatter respectively are designed to characterize these two kinds of manifolds. Finally, a weight coefficient is used to strike a balance between the two scatters. This paper addresses the problem of distant speech recognition in reverberant noisy conditions employing a star-shaped microphone array and vector Taylor series (VTS) compensation. First, a beamformer yields an enhanced single-channel signal by applying convex (CVX) optimization over three spatial dimensions given the spatio-temporal position of the target speaker as prior knowledge. Then, VTS compensation is applied over the speech features extracted from the temporal signal obtained by the beamformer. Finally, the compensated features are used for speech recognition. Due to a lack of existing resources in German to evaluate the proposed enhancement framework, this paper also introduces a new speech database. In particular, we present a medium-vocabulary German database for microphone array made of embedded clean signals contaminated with real room impulsive responses and mixed in a ‘natural’ way with real noises. We show that the proposed enhancement framework performs better than other related systems on the presented database. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

With high definition cameras are widely used in urban traffic monitoring, the resolution of vehicle and traffic monitoring image rises. As the main component of intelligent traffic system, the vehicle license plate recognition technique faces new challenges and some new demands are put forward. Aiming at the problems of cutting down the time delay and eliminating characters outside of vehicle license plate, a set of license plate recognition algorithm is developed in this paper. The process of recognition in this paper is divided into four parts: image preprocessing, license plate location, license plate segmentation and character recognition. In license plate location, an accelerating matching method based on particle image correlation method is employed. In character recognition, an improved BP neural network algorithm is employed. The principle, procedure and simulation of the algorithm is described in details. High definition images with 2 mega pixels are used as the input of simulation. © 2015 SERSC.

The cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is an emerging network architecture that holds the promise of coping with the explosive growth of mobile wireless data. In this paper, by considering the stochastic traffic arrivals and time-varying channel conditions, we address the stochastic optimization of joint remote radio head (RRH) activation and linear beamforming to maintain delay performance and minimize average network power consumption in downlink slotted C-RAN. We first formulate the joint optimization as a group sparse beamforming problem. Based on Lyapunov optimization technique, the stochastic optimization problem is then transformed into a queue-aware joint RRH activation and beamforming problem, which can be greedily solved at each slot. Finally, a low-complexity stationary algorithm with guaranteed convergence and closed-form expressions is proposed. The proposed algorithm can be implemented in a parallel manner, thus it is highly scalable to a large-sized C-RAN. Extensive numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Systematic polar codes are proposed by Arikan and are shown to have better BER performance than non-systematic polar codes. From a recursive decomposition of the generator matrix of polar codes, Arikan showed that the encoding complexity of systematic polar codes is also O(N log N) where N is the code block length. But the recursive process involves some additional calculations in transforming the problem instances back and forth. In this paper, by using the sparsity property of the generator matrix, we propose an encoding process which has the same complexity as non-systematic polar codes in the presence of an additional memory array. Without the additional memory elements, the number of additions of the proposed encoding process increases compared with non-systematic polar codes. We also provide an analysis to quantify this additional increase of the complexity.

To highlight the saliency object clearly from the foreground, we propose a saliency detection method based on global contrast with cluster. Due to the fact that background pixels usually have similar patches, we use cluster analysis to merge the background regions. By using mean shift filter, the background pixels with similar color level are clustered and the saliency calculation can be decreased a lot. In the method, we use the contrast of color feature with all the other pixels to compute the saliency map. A weight coefficient is utilized to improve the detection accuracy in global contrast differences evaluation. The results of extensive experiments on public dataset show that our method perform well and can highlight the salient object clearly against the other five state-of-the-art methods. Besides, we demonstrate that the applications in image segmentation and fusion with our saliency map can get satisfactory results. © 2015 SERSC.

The development of radar technology is a serious threat to the stealth of aircraft. To decrease the radar cross section (RCS) and enhance the stealth ability of targets, the absorber can be used. Based on graphene in this paper, a broadband absorber is proposed. The absorption rate of the proposed absorber is more than 90% in the 2.1-9.0GHz range with the relative bandwidth of 123%. Moreover, it has the microwave absorbing properties of polarization insensitive and wide incident angle range.

Coordinated multi-point (CoMP) has been raised to increase the average cell throughput and the cell-edge user throughput. However, the energy consumption of mobile stations (MSs) is a key problem restricting the wide application of CoMP systems. Considering the energy consumption of feeding back channel state information (CSI) by MSs and the influence of CSI accuracy on the throughput of system, it is proposed to measure the relationship between feedback energy consumption and throughput with energy efficiency feedback utility (EEFU) function which can adapt to different application scenes by adjusting utilization coefficient. The feedback utilization of two precoders in CoMP systems is analyzed respectively, including the optimization allocation of feedback bits with utility function. The complete EEFU optimized expression and the optimizing flow path satisfying the actual application demands of CoMP systems are then derived. The simulation results illustrate the practicability and necessity of the EEFU function and verify the performance of EEFU with different precoders. © 2015 SERSC.

A method for control of adaptation rate in acoustic feedback cancellation systems for hearing aids

Adaptive filters such as the normalized least mean square algorithm are popularly used to deal with acoustic feedback problem in hearing aids. This algorithm has to compromise between fast convergence and low misalignment. In order to meet these conflictions, a method for control of adaptation rate in acoustic feedback cancellation systems is proposed. The adaptation rate is controlled by the update state of the filter. Different adaptation rates are employed in different update states which are classified into convergent state, transitional state and steady state. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the fixed step size Normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS), Variable Step Size Normalized Least Mean Square (VSS-NLMS) based on recursive error energy and VSS-NLMS based on estimated variances. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method has better performance than other algorithms in terms of spectral distortion, Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) and average misalignment in steady state. © ICIC International 2015.
