We present the Document-Entity-Topic (DET) model for semantic social network analysis which tries to find out the interested entities through the topics we aim at, detect groups according to the entities which concern the similar topics, and rank the plentiful entities in a document to figure out the most valuable ones. DET model learns the topic distributions by the literal descriptions of entities. The model is similar to Author-Topic (AT) model, adding the key attribute that the distribution of entities in a document is not uniform but Dirichlet allocation. We experiment on the "Libya Event" data set which is collected from the Internet. DET model increases the precision on tasks of social network analysis and gives much lower perplexity than AT model. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, an effective speech coder that is based on a sparse representation of speech by exploiting the strong dependencies between adjacent pitch cycles is proposed. In the proposed coder, a pitch-synchronous processing that consists of pitch warping and a two-stage transformation is used to achieve a compact representation of the voiced speech. Power spectral density preserving quantization (PSD-PQ) is adopted for quantizing the transform coefficients. The result is a coder that is efficient over a wide range of bit rates: it approaches perfect reconstruction with increasing rate, and has a parametric signal representation at low rates. Both objective PESQ results and subjective A/B listening tests show that the proposed coder outperforms the ITU-T G.722.1 codec.

Method for convergent projective non-negative matrix factorization

In order to solve the problem of algorithm convergence in Projective Non-negative Matrix Factorization (P-NMF), a method, called Convergent Projective Non-negative Matrix Factorization (CP-NMF), is proposed. In CP-NMF, an objective function of Frobenius norm is defined. The Taylor series expansion and the Newton iteration formula of solving root are used. An iterative algorithm for basis matrix is derived, and a proof of algorithm convergence is provided. Experimental results show that the convergence speed of the algorithm is higher, however it is affected by the initial value of the basis matrix;relative to Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), the orthogonality and the sparseness of the basis matrix are better, however the reconstructed results of data show that the basis matrix is still approximately orthogonal;in face recognition, there is higher recognition accuracy. Application and method of feature extraction for approximate orthogonal non-negative matrix factorization

In order to get effectively feature vectors of samples, a method of feature extraction is proposed based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) with approximate orthogonal constraint. An objective function is defined to impose approximate orthogonal constraint, in addition to the non-negative constraint in the standard NMF. An algorithm of iterative update for basis matrix and weight matrix in non-negative matrix factorization is derived, and then computational method of feature vectors is gotten. A proof of the convergence of the algorithm is provided. Empirical results of handwritten character recognition show that there is high recognition accuracy if only the rank of the basis matrix is set correctly. The method of feature extraction is useful to get essential feature of sample, and is effective to recognition when the structures of the handwritten characters are obviously different. In this paper, A set of spatio-temporal covariance matrices which possess diagonal structure are introduced. Then we use a high quality signal subspace as a dimension-reduction matrix dealing with the set of correlation matrices. A novel cost function was proposed based on nonlinear least squares. Afterwards, a new approach termed Tri-iterative algorithm (TIA) was derived for solving the cost function and estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of sources. Some numerical simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.

Multi-granular model to solve netted problem

The complex problems usually have netted structure, namely netted problems. The generally solving methods are based on sequence-searching or tree-searching of this kind of problems. But the structure of netted problems isn't merely sequence or tree. The Multi-granular Model was proposed in this paper which is put forward based on granular transaction of Quotient Space Theory. The whole problem is represented as a directed graph. Firstly, this graph was projected by constraints of original problem into coarse-grained spaces. Then granular decomposition is used to clear up the circle paths in new graph. In optimal quotient space, we search the answers according to the ordered sequence which is got by traversing the result of granular decomposition. In this paper, an applicable example is given and experiment contrasted with traditional tree searching method shows that this algorithm spends less time complexity and smaller space complexity. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

Nitrogen is a key factor for plant photosynthesis, ecosystem productivity and leaf respiration. Under the condition of nitrogen deficiency, the crop shows the nitrogen deficiency symptoms in the bottom leaves, while excessive nitrogen will affect the upper layer leaves first. Thus, timely measurement of vertical distribution of foliage nitrogen content is critical for growth diagnosis, crop management and reducing environmental impact. This study presents a method using bi-directional reflectance difference function (BRDF) data to invert foliage nitrogen vertical distribution. We developed upper-layer nitrogen inversion index (ULNI), middle-layer nitrogen inversion index (MLNI) and bottom-layer nitrogen inversion index (BLNI) to reflect foliage nitrogen inversion at upper layer, middle layer and bottom layer, respectively. Both ULNI and MLNI were made by the value of the ratio of Modified Chlorophyll Absorption Ration Index to the second Modified Triangular Vegetation Index (MCARI/MTVI2) referred to as canopy nitrogen inversion index (CNII) in this study at ±40° and ±50°, and at ±30° and ±40° view angles, respectively. The BLNI was composed by the value of nitrogen reflectance index (NRI) at ±20° and ±30° view angles. These results suggest that it is feasible to measure foliage nitrogen vertical-layer distribution in a large scale by remote sensing.

Super-resolution localization microscopy relies on sparse activation of photo-switchable probes. Such activation, however, introduces limited temporal resolution. High-density imaging overcomes this limitation by allowing several neighboring probes to be activated simultaneously. In this work, we propose an algorithm that incorporates a continuous-domain sparsity prior into the high-density localization problem. We use a Taylor approximation of the PSF, and rely on a fast proximal gradient optimization procedure. Unlike currently available methods that use discrete-domain sparsity priors, our approach does not restrict the estimated locations to a pre-defined sampling grid. Experimental results of simulated and real data demonstrate significant improvement over these methods in terms of accuracy, molecular identification and computational complexity.
