Panoramic mosaics methods based on an 8-parameter planar homography matrix have to overcome the accumulated errors when a sequence of images loops back on itself. Usual methods are computationally intensive, and cannot ensure complete consistency of homographies. The paper presents a simple method which does not require the consistency of homographies. The method mainly exploits an un-calibrated image perspective interpolation technique (B. Yuan et al., 1998). It is therefore simple to calculate and easy to implement.

Local adaptive image denoising in transform domain is a powerful tool for adapting to unknown smoothness of the images. We propose to perform local adaptive denoising with adaptively varying local transform support size rather than using a transform with fixed size. We use a special rule (intersection of confidence intervals-ICI) to select the optimum window sizes locally. The algorithm provides significant improvements in the de-noising performance.

We present a generalized version of principal ratio combining (PRC) proposed by Tarokh and Lo (see IEEE Communications Letters, vol.2, p.223-25, 1998), which is a near-optimum detection scheme for space-time codes in quasistatic flat fading environments. In Tarokh et al. work, the performance penalty increases as the number of receive antennas increases. In the proposed scheme, receive antennas are divided into K groups, and the PRC detection method is applied to each group. This shows a flexible tradeoff between performance and decoding complexity by choosing the appropriate K.

We propose a soft handoff method in packet network for CDMA mobile station and three delay constrained routing algorithms for this application that find a tree between multiple sources and multiple destinations. The proposed algorithms, which provide guaranteed QoS (quality-of-service) services at the network layer, are also designed to find reduced-cost routing trees. The proposed algorithms are verified by simulation, and three algorithms' performances are compared in view of the total tree cost and maximum end-to-end delay.

The edge and motion are the main features that human visual system (HVS) perceives intensively. This paper proposes an algorithm for the segmentation of the moving object with accurate boundary using color and motion focusing on the HVS perception in the general image sequence. The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: color segmentation, motion analysis, and region refinement and merging part. In the color segmentation phase, K-Means algorithm is used in consideration of the sensitivity of the human color perception to get the boundaries that HVS perceives. The global and local motion estimation are performed in parallel with color analysis. After that, Bayesian clustering using color and motion provides more accurate boundary. In the final stage, regions are merged taking into account their motion. The experimental results of the proposed algorithm show the accurate moving object boundary coinciding with the boundary that HVS perceives. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Image indexing is the process of image retrieval from databases of images or videos based on their contents. Specifically histogram-based algorithms are considered to be effective for color image indexing. We suggest a new method of color space quantization in the CIELUV color space, named weighted LUV quantization. With this method, each bin in the LUV space has a different weighting factor, which is applied to the histogram intersection. The weighted LUV histogram intersection provides the advantage of perceptual uniformity of the CIELUV color space. An additional advantage is the consideration of perceptual sensitivity to more saturated colors by the use of a weighting factor.

We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.

Natural Human-Computer Interface requires integration of realistic audio and visual information for perception and display. An example of such an interface is an animated talking head displayed on the computer screen in the form of a human-like computer agent. This system converts text to acoustic speech with synchronized animation of mouth movements. The talking head is based on a generic 3D human head model, but to improve realism, natural looking personalized models are necessary. In this paper, we report a semi-automatic method for adapting a generic head model to 3D range data of a human head obtained from a 3D-laser range scanner. This personalized model is incorporated into the talking head system. With texture mapping, the personalized model offers a more natural and realistic look than the generic model. The model created with the proposed method compares favorable to generic models.

Trellis-coded OFDM signal detection with maximal ratio combining and combined equalization and trellis decoding

We propose an improved orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal detector which uses the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) noise feedback equalization (NFE). The input bit stream is trellis-coded to form OFDM signal blocks and the maximal ratio combining (MRC) is adopted at the receiver in order to improve the performance of the detector. As a result, we obtain significantly improved detection performance compared with the conventional OFDM receivers as follows. Using the proposed MMSE-NFE in the receiver, we can obtain the performance gain of about 1.5 dB to 2 dB in symbol energy to noise power spectral density (E-s/N-O) for Doppler frequencies of f(d) = 20 and 100 Hz, respectively over the receiver with the MMSE linear equalization (LE) alone at symbol error rate (SER) of about 10(-3). With MRC and trellis coding, the performance gain of about 11 dB in E-s/N-O for f(d) = 20 and 100 Hz at SER of about 10(-3) is obtained.
