The monolayer graphene has received intensive attention due to its unique characteristics, such as atomic thickness, tunable Fermi level by doping. Here, we will present comprehensive studies from theoretical modeling to application of graphene based nanodevice. Our work indicates that graphene can be considered as bulk material with an effective thickness. In addition, we propose graphene as nanospacer forming a strong coupling sandwiched nanodevice, which realizes strong coupling between localized surface plasmon of metal nanoparticle and surface plasmon of planar metal film. Our work is of critical importance for graphene modeling and applications.

The present work develops the mathematical base of ill-posed inverse problems in optics, as well as a method of processing and reconstructing scenes from incomplete information of their Fourier spectra. This problem is a part of the general problem of the eliminating the influence atmospheric and optical distortion when finding and registering an object at large distances under bad atmospheric conditions. The designed programmed methods are also used to process medical images.

Gas acoustic spectrum represents properties of acoustic propagation, which can distinguish gas compositions. However in few existing methods of gas-composition-unknown recognition, the approaches of programmatically processing the acoustic spectrum curves have not yet been presented. We propose a method for gas-composition-unknown recognition by analyzing gas acoustic relaxation absorption spectrum(GARAS) based on wavelet multi-resolution analysis(MRA) and multi-class support vector machine(SVM). Features of GARAS are extracted by wavelet MRA, and then selected to obtain a few feature coefficients which are utilized to train and test multi-class SVM. Simulation results show that the proposed method completely classifies four examples of gas mixtures, and that it recognizes the mixtures with the same and similar concentration or temperature. This method realizes the numerically extracting and programmatically processing the information of GARAS, and implements gas-composition-unknown sensing based on acoustic spectrums.

A new theoretical model for describing an impact oscillator that is based on the use of a fractional derivative is constructed. The acoustic signals that occur when the probe strikes the surface of metals are experimentally investigated. It is shown that acoustic signals can be used to diagnose elastic properties of materials. © 2019 IEEE.

With the increasing deployment of various medium, the transmission performance has become a key issue of the Internet research. An important impact on the performance is the packet reordering, which is well-known in packet transmission. First, this paper provides a brief review of the existing packet reordering metrics. We also explore the flexibility of existing passive metrics. As a new rising transmission medium, the satellite-based Internet covers widespread areas nowadays, and its transmission performance is susceptible to the packet reordering. We carried out the experiments in practice network environment, and compare the results of the terrestrial-based and satellite-based Internet. Experimental results show the reordering ratio on satellite-based Internet is less than that of terrestrial-based Internet. Finally, we present a novel perspective to explain the reordering phenomenon in TCP/IP flows. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2017.

Pneumonia is one of the foremost lung diseases and untreated pneumonia will lead to serious threats for all age groups. The proposed work aims to extract and evaluate the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused pneumonia infection in lung using CT scans. We propose an image-assisted system to extract COVID-19 infected sections from lung CT scans (coronal view). It includes following steps: (i) Threshold filter to extract the lung region by eliminating possible artifacts;(ii) Image enhancement using Harmony-Search-Optimization and Otsu thresholding;(iii) Image segmentation to extract infected region(s);and (iv) Region-of-interest (ROI) extraction (features) from binary image to compute level of severity. The features that are extracted from ROI are then employed to identify the pixel ratio between the lung and infection sections to identify infection level of severity. The primary objective of the tool is to assist the pulmonologist not only to detect but also to help plan treatment process. As a consequence, for mass screening processing, it will help prevent diagnostic burden. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and lack of frequency diversity are two well-known issues with orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulations, especially over underwater acoustic (UWA) channels. The precoding (spreading) technique is a viable way to simultaneously address the aforementioned issues, and it has long been researched in the wireless communication field. In the past decade, it has also gained increasing attention in multicarrier UWA communications. However, a comprehensive study on precoded OFDMs over UWA channels is still lacking. In this work, a unified system model accommodating linear precoding schemes is introduced for precoded OFDMs. Based on the model, a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) detector is developed for performance evaluation. Several typical precoding schemes are then evaluated and compared, in terms of PAPR and uncoded bit error rate (UBER), over the UWA channels measured in an at-sea experiment. This analysis showed the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) and the inverse DFT (IDFT) precoding schemes achieve the lowest PAPR. In terms of UBER, the DFT, IDFT, and discrete cosine transform (DCT) precodings achieved comparable performance that is significantly better than that of the standard OFDM over highly frequency-selective experimental channels. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.

In this paper, cluster centers are defined as local maxima in the density which is called density peaks. We use an algorithm based on density peaks to cluster multipath components (MPCs) whose parameters are estimated by the space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) algorithm. To validate its performance, we apply it to the data from a channel measurement in an indoor scenario at 28 GHz and compare it to the widely used KPowerMeans algorithm with the same distance metric of multiple component distance (MCD). Through the results, we find it can cluster MPCs more accurately validated by Calinski-Harabasz (CH) and Davies-Bouldin (DB) indices. More importantly, it overcomes the shortcoming of setting the number of clusters manually because we can determine the cluster centers automatically. Besides, the efficiency of DP clustering is far superior to KPowerMeans because what it needs is only a distance matrix and we only need to compute it once. At the end, statistical analysis of clusters are presented to provide insights in channel modeling of millimeter wave. © Institution of Engineering and *** Rights Reserved.

Nowadays, narrowband interferences (NBIs) severely affect the imaging quality of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Fortunately, NBIs has nearly fixed frequencies along the azimuth time and they are demonstrated to be low rank in previous studies. All the NBI suppression methods are based on one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) domains to extract NBIs from the received signal. Actually, NBIs have a special low-rank property which can be employed in three-dimensional (3-D) domain for extra spacial degrees of freedom (DOFs). Hence in this paper, we propose a reweighted tensor nuclear norm minimization (RTNNM) algorithm to efficiently and effectively mitigate NBIs via three-mode tensor structure. The proposed method employs the special low-rank property of NBIs via multiple views in range-azimuth-space domain and deals with the drawback of the tensor nuclear norm minimization algorithm. The real X-band SAR data is employed to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Heralded noiseless amplification is beneficial in overcoming transmission photon loss in a noisy quantum channel. We propose a single-photon-assisted heralded noiseless amplification protocol of the single- photon entanglement （SPE）, where the single-photon qubit has an arbitrary unknown polarization feature. We focus on both the complete and partial photon loss during the transmission process. After the amplification, the parties can recover the pure less-entangled SPE into a maximally entangled SPE and increase its fidelity. Moreover, the polarization feature of the single-photon qubit will be well preserved and not be leaked. Our protocol can be realized under our current experimental condition. Based on the features above, our protocol may be useful in the quantum secure communication schemes that encode information in the polarization degree of freedom of photons.
